Aputure AL-F7 Overview

The Aputure Amaran AL-F7 On-Camera Variable Color LED Light is an on-camera LED light that utilizes 256 LEDs with a CRI of 95+ to deliver variable color illumination with high color accuracy. This fixture features variable color temperature output from 3200 to 9500K. The fixture's 45° beam angle produces a brightness of 1500 lux at 3.3' when set to 5500K.

A stepless dimming dial is provided on the back of the unit for adjusting light output from 1 to 100%. Color temperature and brightness are also controlled by a single stepless rotating knob. The built-in LCD screen provides information on the remaining battery charge, color temperature, and brightness. Two 1/4"-20 threaded mounting holes, one on top and one at the bottom of the fixture, provide for a variety of mounting possibilities.

Key Features
  • 256 LEDs with 45° beam angle.
  • 3200 to 9500K variable color temperature light fixture.
  • High CRI of ≥95.
  • Stepless dimming dial for adjusting light output from 1 to 100%.
  • Powered by an L-series battery, D-Tap, or USB-C.
Because the light has a variable color range of 3200 to 9500K, when the light is set to 5500K (daylight balanced) both sets of LEDs are on at full, providing the maximum brightness from this fixture when compared to using the light at 3200 or 9500K.
The LCD screen provides information on the fixture's output as well as the charge state of the battery. The screen also indicates whether the adjustment knob is controlling brightness or color temperature. To switch from brightness to CCT or CCT to brightness, just apply a short press to the adjustment knob.
The included cold shoe ball joint adapter enables mounting the light to your camera's accessory shoe via the 1/4"-20 threaded hole on the fixture. In addition, the bottom of the cold shoe foot features a 3/8"-16 threaded hole, and includes a 3/8"-16 to 1/4"-20 reducing bushing.
Included with the fixture is a diffusion filter.

This thing is pretty bright! Easy UI and great quality.

This little on camera light can't be beat for the price. It has lots of output, and diffusion when needed. Light weight. Allows you to match the color temp there ever you need a little fill or any kind of light. Plenty of ways to power it. Having this in my kit saved my tail.

Need it.

The product is light and bright just what it is advertised as, I use for back or side lighting to accent the subject in the image, I am satisfied.

Great size, output, and build.

Great color & battery choices, but underwhelming brightness

Based on its specs which I studied before buying it, I recognized that this would not be a very bright light, as compared to other LED panels (such as the new Amaran P60x), and that is so. Its uses are limited because it is not very bright; hence only 4 stars. With that one negative out of the way, I can say it has nice versatility regarding power choices (I already have NP-F batteries for other devices), and it is amazingly easy and accurate to dial in a specific color value. I shot some indoor video with it recently and had to match it with 2700K ambient lighting; it was a breeze! (Although this light cannot join a Sidus Link mesh from what I understand, I nonetheless used the Light Meter utility in the Sidus Link app to verify color temperatures of ambient lighting and this light as well; that works great for that purpose!) I will likely use the light a lot, so long as I do not need a bright light (like the P60X or P60C which will probably be my next purchases). And it is small enough for me to toss my flash and use this instead for fill or key with photomacrography. Very cool.

Bright and compact, multiple power options

Incredibly bright and compact panel. Very light, construction does feel very plasticky, but it's sturdy and well-built regardless. The multiple powering options are very convenient, particularly by USB. I actually bought this panel for the lack of a built-in battery (an eventual point of failure) and the flexible external power options. Be mindful of the output at various color temperatures, as the description says. Full output is at 5500k where all LED's are on, but once you start adjusting to either end of the spectrum, half of the LED's will start to dim. The provided case is really handy and has some space for a slim battery bank in the pocket where the diffusers and literature sit.

Quality product and quality advice from B&H advisor Jonathan

I spent a valuable 20-minutes conferring wit B&H product advisor Jonathan at the Super Store on 9th Avenue. He understood exactly my needs, my Nikon equipment and my requirements for color-balancing my fill lighting. He demonstrated the on-camera variable Color LED light and was able to show me the throw-distance. It was very convincing. He also offered me the best possible choice of two batteries and chargers for the on-camera LED light. I was very impressed with the knowledge and hands-on experience of the employees. My whole experience was extremely positive from the moment I entered the store, asked for directions, and consultations with Jonathan at in the pro-video department. Even the check-out at the cash was quick and efficient and the girl at the cash provided service with a smile and a B&H carrying bag for my photo equipment. Thank You B&H. Been purchasing from you for years ( on-Line) Very nice to finally experience the Super Store. Amazing environment for a photographer of 40-years. Many thanks to the talented and professional staff !

This carries a lot more power than you may think. I have used it to add a defining light to the objects I photograph during night photography.

A single Amaran AL-F7 is approximately equivalent to 160 Watt Incandescent bulb without a reflector at a distance of 15 feet from subject About 2400 Lumen incandescent equivalent (no reflector) I use two amaran AL-F7 with a 1/4 20 male to 1/4 20 male adapter ( rubber washers) to get aprox 300 Watts equivalent @ 20 feet https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1069592-REG/kupo_kg007412_1_4_20m_to.html Beyond 20 - 25 feet, I'd need a better camera I have a generic camcorder, not even prosumer grade I have the lightest diffusor on each now, so a bit less output than I stated above

There is no grid option for the Aputure Amaran AL-F7. However, there is the Chimera Lightbank for Aputure AL-F7. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1578719-REG/chimera_1607_lightbank_for_aputure_al_f7.html
