Atomos Ninja V Overview

  • 1Description

The Atomos Ninja V 5" 4K HDMI Recording Monitor is a 5" on-camera monitor/recorder that records and plays back DCI 4K, UHD 4K, and HD video from purpose-built mini-SSDs. It features a 10-bit FRC IPS screen with a brightness of 1000 cd/m², which makes it suitable for use in both exterior and interior conditions. The AtomHDR display technology allows you to accurately monitor your log gamma footage without having to view flat, washed-out looking images or use a LUT to compress the dynamic range and color space. The monitor supports popular log formats from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, ARRI, RED, and JVC cameras. The settings only affect viewing, with recorded video remaining unaltered.

Built to withstand the rigors of production, the Ninja V features an aluminum chassis and powers from a single L-series battery. Additional features include a variety of onscreen exposure analysis, framing, and focus assist tools, as well as anamorphic de-squeeze. A power supply and SSD Caddy are included with the unit.

Designed with an interface that differs somewhat from prior units, the Ninja V's HDR functions are accessed through the MON buttons and its ProRes options are chosen via the arrows on the unit's upper left corner. The Ninja V can record to both AtomX SSDmini or standard 2.5" SSD drives, fitting up to 150 minutes of 4K video on an 1TB drive. Separately available AtomX Ethernet/NDI and SYNC Expansion Modules enable you to output live video over IP or add wireless timecode for multicamera shoots respectively.

With AtomHDR you can monitor up to ten stops of dynamic range of your camera's LOG image. Most conventional monitors can only display six or seven stops, which is fine for standard footage; but a Log image will look overly flat. It is also superior to monitoring with a loaded LUT, which can clip the highlights and mask shadows.

4K 60p Capabilities

Record high-resolution 4K footage in DCI or UHD formats up to 60 fps, including 24 and 25 fps for a more film-like aesthetic. All recordings are stored as high-quality Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHR files with 10-bit 4:2:2 chroma subsampling. A variety of bit rates are available to fit your project and storage needs.

SSD Recording

Record to standard 2.5" SSD drives or to compact AtomX SSDmini drives, capturing up to 150 minutes of 4K video on a 1TB drive.

Audio I/O

Input/output audio via HDMI or add external audio via the 3.5mm Line In/Mic In port; output audio using the 3.5mm headphone port for convenient audio monitoring.

5" Daylight Viewable Screen

The Ninja V features a 5" IPS LCD screen that is illuminated by a bright 1000 cd/m² LED backlight, making it possible to view in daylight without requiring a hood. Plus, the screen is also color calibrated from the factory to ensure accurate image representation.

HDR Signal Management

Log and HDR signals can be difficult to monitor with conventional equipment. Though, with the Ninja V's built-in HDR signal management functions, the log signal can be converted to the PQ standard for compatibility with existing consumer and professional HDR equipment.

Anamorphic De-Squeeze

The Ninja V supports Anamorphic de-squeeze, allowing you to comfortably view anamorphic footage with a squeeze of 2x, 1.5x, 1.33, and Panasonic's 8:3.

Edit-Ready Recording

Incoming video signals can be recorded in a wide range of Apple ProRes and Avid DNx codecs which maintain high quality while not requiring the storage space of uncompressed video. Both ProRes and DNx are edit-friendly, requiring no conversion in post-production to ensure smooth playback and compatibility with most common video editing software.

Optional Expansion Modules

The Ninja V features a bidirectional high-speed video port along with power and audio which enables the use of the AtomX Ethernet/NDI and SYNC modules along with future module releases.

    Atomos Ninja V Reviews

Ninja V 5- 4K HDMI Recording Monitor is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Right-Sized Monitor/Recorder The Ninja V is my second recorder, the first being a 7" Ninja Inferno. I shoot a lot of location video, and recording low-compression video is a huge boost in image quality. More important, I can shoot with a Sony A9 or A7Riii without the phony 29 minute clip limit. Even with lower brightness, the V is easily visible outdoors, without a hood. How did I ever do without one. The Ninja V does not come with the handy carrying case like the 7" versions. I find that a Lowepro Dashpoint AVC2 semi-rigid zipper case is the ideal size for the Ninja V, a couple of batteries and cables. Running mobile, everything needs a secure way to carry the essentials.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small, robust, but a little noisey Just got my Ninja V, and the solid metal frame feels strong and sturdy, nice bright, and hi res screen and UI, but I'd say you'd get a few sound recordists looking at you when shooting in small/quiet rooms in interview type situations, as the fan runs constantly, and you can't turn it off as far as I can figure out, it's not super loud, but it's noticeable. It can fit standard 2.5 SSD's with the supplied caddy easy enough if you don't want to fork out more for mini SSDs, it just pokes out the side about an inch.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Unfinished product 1. Unlike Ninja Blade, Ninja V wont recognize signal from Canon 5DmkIV and make 2:2 pulldown automatically (I shoot PAL1080p25). Even when you set it up manually (which is time consuming), after powering off, Ninja V it resets and you have to do it again. I dont have time for this flaw. Its just waste of my time. 2. Atomos calibration is not working. 3. No Manual! Screen is great but software is unfinished. I expect from my gear not to slow me down and Ninja V is just doing that. I make mistakes because of it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Have The size is perfect for run & gun. It works as advertised. Be advised that the coiled HDMI cable advertised with this unit will not support 60P. You have to purchase the more expensive cable on another page with the Atomos logo on the plugs for 60P to work.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lots of Color Noise in the Blacks I shoot TV Series and we wanted to add this to our other Recorders but with a smaller setup.  Shooting on Canon Log, the Ninja V on Prores has a lot of noise in the blacks.  Weve had to use de-noise software on every shot so far that has any low light or shadow environment.  Upon use theres lots of horizontal color banding noise throughout.  We contacted Atomos and have not heard back.  And additionally weve watched the video by the CEO where he talks about how to avoid noise in the blacks.  Simply put, footage is much worse than the 4:2:0 footage captured in the camera or on our other Atomos 4:2:2 recorders.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Sound recording is bad I was very pleased with the monitor itself, but found out my unit records audio with a weird buzz/interference in the background. I tried different microphones, and the same issue persisted. Also, the "remote" port is twisted as though it wasn't properly placed/assembled during manufacturing. I'm returning my Atomos Ninja V hoping to get another one that doesn't have this sound problem/ twisted port.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for my Mirrorless setup Bought this even though it doesnt seem to be getting very good reviews and I am really liking it. I have used other Atomos monitors, so the learning curve wasnt bad. The manual is online now in PDF. Its bright enough for daylight, small enough for my mirrorless rig without being super top heavy, and has a ton of features for the price.  Cons:  -Battery life is not great. I keep brightness around 50% when Im indoors and still not great. Buy lots of batteries.  -Fan noise is noticeable, but not terrible. -An annoying amount of lag time when switching from record mode to playback. I wish it was faster. Really slow to power up as well. I dont understand why it needs several seconds to power up and show display.  -Still think all the Atomos monitors are too expensive. With memory its nearly the price of a new iPhone or mirrorless camera.  Overall, I would buy this again. Mini SSDs are not cheap, so be prepared to spend more. Make sure to buy the Atomos HDMI or do research because some functions apparently do not work from what I have read. Working great shooting 4k60p 10bit 4:2:2 on my Fujifilm XT-3

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small, lightweight, and with great visibility outdoors! This is my first monitor ever and I am glad I waited for the 5 version. The screen is plenty big enough for composing my shots and making sure I am properly focused. The monitor does an amazing job when shooting in any log profile by giving you an accurate simulation of it in rec.709 allowing you to properly expose in high dynamic environments. ProRes and DnxHR are amazing codecs with minimal compression allowing you to push grading even farther. I totally recommend the ninja v.

    Can I use it with Fujifilm Xh1 to record 60p 4K 10bit 422? What about Fujifilm Xt2?
    Asked by: ek C.
You will be able to use the Ninja V with both cameras. However those cameras only output 4K at up to 30fps and 8-Bit 4:2:2. The camera most output at 60fps and 10-Bit for it to be recorded in that format, which those cameras do not.

It does. And, in the very near future, it will support ProRes RAW from the Z6. This will come in a firmware update from Atomos.

Is this compatible with the Canon 80D ?
    Asked by: Lissa
Hi. The short answer is no. There's a couple of things to consider with you want to pair with with a 80D. One, does the 80D have a "clean" output? You can test this on your TV and diving in the camera menu. The manual gives no information about it. A "clean" output means none of the settings are displayed on the HDMI output. Without a "clean" output, your footage will not be usable for editing. Second, the HDMI output on the 80D is likely 1080p/24, please verify. The Ninja V is a 4k/60 recorder. So you're paying for features you won't use. I hope that helps.

What is the bit rate for 4K 30fps or 1080P 60fps from a Sony A7III. Or what file size would 10 minutes of video be?
    Asked by: Richard
Hello Richard, the general rule of thumb is about 100 GB per hour on HD and 400 GB on 4K. you'll have to check on ProRes or DNx white paper.

What is the battery life of the Ninja V if you are just using it as a monitor?

Totally depends on the battery you put in it, (it doesn't come with one) but I've gotten about 25-30 minutes out of an np-f550 while only monitoring.
