Panasonic DC-ZS200 Overview

  • 1Description

Comprising the essentials needed to begin shooting, the black Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS200 Digital Camera with Accessory Kit from B&H bundles the advanced compact camera with an SDHC memory card and a carrying case.

  • Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS200 Digital Camera (Black)

Built with portability in mind, the black Lumix DC-ZS200 Digital Camera from Panasonic is a sleek point-and-shoot camera with notable photo and video capabilities. Despite its compact size at only 4.4" in width, the camera manages to incorporate a large 1" High-Sensitivity MOS sensor and a Leica 15x optical zoom lens for shooting high quality 20.1MP photos. Complementing the sensor is a Venus Engine image processor capable of UHD 4K video recording at up to 30 fps and with an extended ISO of 25600 for use in low-light situations.

The Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens incorporated in this camera has a 24-360mm equivalent focal length range that can cover a wide variety of situations. In the video department, a High-Speed mode allows the ZS200 to record Full HD 120 fps footage and play it back at 30 fps, resulting in instant slow motion video. Also available is a 4K Photo Mode that uses the camera's video capabilities to generate 8 MP pictures at 30 fps; regular burst shooting at higher resolutions can reach 10 fps in AF-S and 6 fps in AF-C, thanks to a fast depth-from-defocus (DFD) focusing system. Finally, a 5-axis Hybrid O.I.S image stabilization system is present in all modes except for 4K and high-speed video recording, and helps minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imaging.

The ZS200 is also characterized by its intuitive physical design, with both an electronic viewfinder and a rear LCD screen available. The Live View Finder is a 0.21" 2330k-Dot EVF that allows for comfortable eye-level monitoring, while the large 3.0" 1240k-dot LCD touchscreen is best-suited for image review, menu navigation, and live view shooting. Additional features include in-camera raw file processing, L-monochrome mode for black and white pictures, and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.

20.1MP 1" MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
A large 1" 20.1MP High-Sensitivity MOS sensor pairs with a Venus Engine image processor to realize rich image quality with reduced noise and high sensitivity to an expanded ISO 25600. The sensor and processor combination also avails continuous shooting rates of 10 fps with single-shot AF, 6 fps with continuous AF, or 30 fps at 8MP in the 4K Photo burst mode.
Leica DC Vario-Elmar 15x Zoom Lens
A long-reaching 15x Leica DC Vario-Elmar zoom offers a 24-360mm equivalent focal length range along with a maximum aperture range of f/3.3-6.4. The lens construction incorporates three ED elements, five aspherical elements, and one aspherical ED lens to minimize spherical aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range for increased image clarity and sharpness.

Benefitting the reach of the lens is a powerful 5-axis Hybrid O.I.S. system that compensates for a variety of camera movements for sharper handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. This image stabilization system also enables a unique Level Shot function that automatically detects the horizontal line of the recording image and keeps it level during shooting, regardless of camera tilt, helping to achieve greater shooting stability.
    4K Video and Photo Modes
The sensor and processor combination also enables 4K video recording at both 30p and 24p frame rates in the MP4 format at 100 Mb/s. Full HD 1080p and HD 720p recording is also possible, as well as high-speed Full HD recording with 120 fps slow-motion playback.

Besides video, the 4K capabilities also permit recording 8MP stills at 30 fps in a trio of ways:

4K Burst: Just as with video recording, this mode will allow you to continuously record 8MP images at 30 fps for up to 15 minutes, making it ideal for instances where you need a fast frame rate in order to capture the best moment.

4K Pre-Burst: This mode is ideal for times when you're unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record 8MP images at 30 fps one second prior to and one second after pressing the shutter button in order to give you 60 frames to choose from.

4K Burst (S/S): This mode most closely follows the 4K video recording process, and allows you to playback your video, pause at the chosen moment, and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame from the video and save it as a single 8MP frame.
Post Focus and Light Speed AF
Another attribute of the 4K capabilities is a unique focusing method called Post Focus. Working in conjunction with the 49-area contrast-detection focusing system, called Light Speed AF, and the intelligent Depth from Defocus (DFD) technology, Post Focus records imagery as a 4K MP4 file at 30 fps and shifts the specific point of focus throughout the burst shooting in order to offer a range of distinct focusing ranges to choose from. During playback, via the camera's touchscreen, you can then tap the specific region of the image you wish to be in focus and an 8MP JPEG file will be created. Multiple individual files with different points of focus can be created from the original burst, and focusing assist functions can also be used to gain even more precise control over the specific in-focus region.
Live View Finder and Rear LCD Touchscreen
A Live View Finder (LVF) is integrated into the sleek body design to permit comfortable eye-level monitoring. This 0.21" electronic viewfinder has a 2330k-dot resolution and covers 100% of the image frame while shooting.

Alternatively, a rear 3.0" 1240k-dot touchscreen LCD monitor is also available for live view shooting, image review, and intuitive menu navigation. Intuitive touch controls allow you to set focus on the subject simply by touching the screen, as well as release the shutter.
    Other Features
    • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth allows you to wirelessly send photos and movies to linked smartphones and tablets for direct sharing online.
    • 4K Photo Auto Marking automatically detects motion on a subject's face and sets a marker, allowing you to quickly skip to that sequence when selecting shots.
    • L.Monochrome mode in Photo Style simulates black and white film, creating impressive monochrome pictures with deep blacks and rich gradations.
    • In-camera raw file processing is possible, allowing you to adjust color space, white balance, exposure compensation, highlights/shadows, saturation, noise reduction, sharpness, and many other settings.
    • The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides you with 370 shots per charge when working with the rear LCD, or 350 pictures with the electronic viewfinder when set to the eco30fps setting.

Panasonic DC-ZS200 Reviews

Lumix DC-ZS200 Digital Camera with Accessory Kit (Black) is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good camera--but no charger? Bought this to carry when I can't haul along my camera bag. After a few weeks, I can say it takes very good photos. The lens is a bit slow--but I knew that from the specs. You have to be careful with the focusing; the camera may not seize on what you wanted. Overall. it seems reasonably well built. I would probably recommend it to a friend. But WHY do manufacturers not provide a separate charger with devices like this? Can it possibly have escaped their notice that a camera being used to charge a battery cannot be used to take a picture? At this price, leaving out a charger is just cheap.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointing The image quality is just not good enough...especially at the longest focal lengths...which is supposedly what this camera is about.? AND...although it performs pretty well, with decent sharpness in bright light, it gets fuzzy as light wanes and ISO increases. Over the years I've had three small cameras before this one.? A Leica D-Lux 3 and D-Lux 5, and a Sony RX-100, the first version.? All were far superior in image to this camera.? The two little Leicas had 1/1.7 sensors and the Sony's was 1" same as this.? I exhibited 17"x22" prints from all, and a couple of remarkably good 30" prints from the first Leica.? It would be impossible to obtain that quality from this camera. So I sent it back to B&H...and once again I bless them for their 30 day return policy.? Maybe I just got a bad one but judging from the professional reviews I've read that are similarly critical of the image quality, I doubt it, and I won't get another. Caveat Emptor!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camera--more than needed? I am an average take it or leave it user. Not fanatic, not professional, not a camera snob. This is a great camera with the 1" sensor, long lens and compact. I also use burst, bracket and a few other features. But the full manual is over 200 pages with all kinds of options and 90% of those pages I will never use. Also the manual is often complicated to understand and follow. But the camera itself is outstanding. My bigger traditional SLR----gone for good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I like it so much about it, but .... I really like the performance, features and build of this camera, but it seems it still has a serious bug lurking within (likely software or firmware). ?The problem I have experienced is that it randomly "locks up" or freezes, totally (nothing works, even the off-on switch when this occurs). ?The only thing I've found that works when it does so is to remove the battery at that time. ?Unfortunately, the photo opportunity at that precious moment is missed. ?So I'm returning the camera, hoping that soon that bug will found and squashed. ?Otherwise, I found the cameral to be an outstanding travel and pocket camera. ?Related, the folks at B&H have been superb in their support of this problem and addressing the return!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A travellers camera! the FZ1000 now fits in your pocket... I did a detailed review of this camera versus the Lumix FZ1000 (super zoom bridge camera) and Lumix LX100 (modest zoom pocketable camera) on Youtube at?https://youtu.be/wlqR4zdpdIE Bottom line is the zoom makes it the best travellers camera by far, built around 4K video and 4K frames from it, and big light gathering 1” 20 MP sensor. The touch screen, although excellent is not quite as handy the dials for shutter, aperature and exposure adjustment as the LX100. That said, it is a bit flatter than the previously best travel camera LX100, so actually IS a pocket camera, in spite of its amazing 24-360mm zoom. Optics on the zoom are a fraction softer than the FZ1000, and with no microphone input jack makes this a handy point and shoot instead of a serious videography choice. Some interesting features buried in the overwhelming menu choices are the usual: customizable settings, time lapse, animation, mostly useless filters. And the unusual: stacking photos for depth of field control, multi level bracketing control, 4K photo capture options, booth WiFi and Bluetooth. It’s expensive ?for such a simple looking pocket camera, but packs superb optically stabilzed video (1080p alas, not available when shooting 4K) a responsive and intuitive touch screen, and honking long optical zoom, especially when combined with digital zoom. At this time there is no better camera perfect for carry on travellers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent pocketable general use camera Improved EVF and extended zoom range on already excellent camera. No obvious degradation of image with increased zoom range compared to ZS100. With RAW the images approximate images from Crop sensor cameras with adequate lighting. Only improvement needed would be weatherproofing.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing camera for the price Ive spent some time considering whether to write what is obviously not a great review of this camera, whose performance I feel does not justify the price nor the  performance the Leica lens would lead one to expect. I planned to use it on an upcoming trip instead of lugging my DSLR equipment with me but after spending a week taking nature and family pictures I decided to return it, and thank B&H for their no-questions asked return policy. First the positive:  Yes, it is compact, not too heavy though heavier than I expected, and the zoom lens is extremely useful. I bought the kit with the belt carry pouch, and it is an excellent way to have the camera ready while moving from location to location. An astonishing number of features, most however difficult to understand or not really useful. If you are really looking for a useful point and shoot camera for travel, are not expecting to blow your pictures up to more than about 8x10 and will use the pictures as they come out of the camera, despite all the drawbacks I list below you will probably like this camera. The negatives:  For my taste, as a serious amateur (and I am not a pixel-peeper), the JPG images it creates are soft and lacking in sharp definition. There is a RAW option, but unless buried somewhere in the copious menu or on-line instructions, I could not find a way to get it to create RAW files that Lightroom or Photoshop could read, and did not want a set of proprietary software just to be able to edit in its proprietary RAW format (.RW2).  The white balance needed manual control to be effective in indoor lighting, and exposure often seemed to err on the under-exposure side unless manually adjusted. Strangely, this did not happen using the video mode, and I though the video shooting was the best feature in the cameras repertoire. The very limited aperture range tended to drive to high ISO shots, causing noticeable pixelation which had to be removed aggressively with noise reduction software in Photoshop. There was noticeable shutter delay which resulted in missed shots of people. This is a very serious drawback if you wish to use the camera to photographs your children or grandchildren, typical in my experience of point and shoot cameras but not what I expected from such an expensive camera. The menu system is loaded with features, but neither the little booklet that came with the camera nor the very large on-line manual could explain well in many cases. For a point and shoot camera, I think most of these features would be best relegated to a semi-professional camera, as setting some of them incorrectly can be very confusing. The most surprising thing of all was the obscure WiFi transfer set up which took me literally hours to get to operate. First it seems I needed to connect the camera by Bluetooth to your cellphone, and only then fiddle with WiFi setting until I strike it lucky and managed to connect to one (but no all) of my various WiFi networks. Once connected, things work as advertised - I could actually control the camera from my cell phone using the Panasonic App, but uploading the pictures was very slow, and I could only get it to upload to new folders the camera created on my computer, not to my usual picture folders. In the end I gave up and simply removed the SD card, uploaded, and returned it to the camera for new shots. I also experienced the camera freezing up once or twice as another reviewer mentioned. I removed the battery and put it back in and the camera then continued to function correctly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly Excellent I dithered for a long time before I bought this camera, because it had mixed reviews. But the image quality, especially starting from RAW files, is excellent, throughout the whole zoom range. I had not expected that, so Im very pleasantly surprised. Its also a very versatile camera. I havent tried video yet, but the still image quality, the compactness, and the zoom range may make this my go everywhere camera.

Has anyone upgraded from a ZS100 to this camera? Worth the upgrade or take a pass?
Asked by: David
The Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS200 Digital Camera is a great improvement over the DC-ZS100. The ZS200 offers a new 15x Leica lens (ZS100 is 10X)., The ZS200 Live Viewfinder resolution in the ZS200 is 2330K dots, (the ZS100 is 1166K dots). The ZS 200 shoots up to 120fps,(the ZS100,up to 59.94), plus the ZS200 offers a 4K photo mode, not included in the ZS100. The upgrade would be well worth it.

No, you charge the battery within the camera via USB charger. I would suggest a separate stand-alone charger if you plan to carry more than one battery (which you should).

Asked by: Anonymous
No, but that wasn't a deal breaker for me, because you can get around that and even improve audio by using even an inexpensive external microphone like the Zoom H1n Digital Handy Recorder.
