Lomography Daguerreotype overview

  • 1Description

Based on the first lens designed specifically for photography, the Canon EF-mount Daguerreotype Achromat 64mm f/2.9 Art Lens from Lomography is a modern interpretation of the classic Chevalier-designed optic from 1835, which was popularized by Daguerre. Using a simple doublet optical design, this lens can produce either characteristic soft focus imagery when shot wide open, or strikingly sharp, well-defined imagery at smaller aperture settings. It uses a Waterhouse aperture system and includes six discs for full-stop adjustments between f/2.9 to f/16, and a series of six creative Lumiere and Aquarelle aperture plates are also included to render either dreamy, glowing images or pictures with a more painterly quality. Manual focus control is possible using the built-in helicoid for working with subjects as close as 1.6' away, and the lens features a scratch-resistant chrome-plated brass housing.

Based on the achromatic lens developed by Chevalier, and used by Daguerre, in 1835, this updated lens retains a similar image quality and allows you to alternate between producing soft-focus, ethereal pictures and sharp-focus, well-defined imagery.
A slightly longer-than-normal-length lens, this Canon EF-mount version is compatible with full-frame sensors and 35mm film, as well as APS-C sensors where it will provide a 102.4mm equivalent focal length.
Simple doublet optical design produces an aesthetic image quality reminiscent of the nearly 200-year-old lens.
Six drop-in style Waterhouse stops, ranging from f/2.9 to f/16, are included for aperture and depth of field control, and are inserted into the middle of the lens prior to making an exposure.
A set of three Lumiere and three Aquarelle aperture plates are also included to produce softer, more painterly effects than the traditional circular plates. The Lumiere plates produce a soft glowing quality with a delicate grainy background while the Aquarelle plates offer a rich, textured, and painterly effect.
Manual focusing helicoid permits working with subjects as close as 1.6' away.
Chrome-plated brass exterior design retains a classic, vintage appeal while also being highly resistant to scratches and rubs.

    Lomography Daguerreotype reviews

Daguerreotype Achromat 64mm f/2.9 Art Lens for Canon EF (Chrome-Plated Brass) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Be a 19th Century Photographer I've long been an admirer of the pioneers of photography, such as William Henry Jackson, Julia Margaret Cameron, Timothy O'Sullivan, among others. In my view camera days, I used a historic lens with some success. Now comes this modern version from Lomography. I really like this lens! It's built like a tank (as it should be). The image quality is great. You get two lenses in one. At wide apertures it lends a fuzzy glow. At smaller ones, the lens is quite sharp. Others have said it's difficult to focus, and it is: it takes a bit of time and is best done on a tripod trying different slide-in aperture rings. Live view helps. I think the colors turn out quite vibrant, but my primary use of this lens will be for monochrome. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A beautiful unique lens The image becomes soft and glowing when opened up, very clear and sharp when stopped down. Definitely great for experimental photography, a retro or old-fashioned style. I am using this in a feature film that is going for a 1940s black and white studio look. You can easily mess up a shot if you use it wrong, but on the other hand you can get a beautiful soft-focus image that is different from digital FX or even using a diffusion filter with an ordinary lens. Fantastic addition to a collection of expressive lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from amazing art lens I am in LOVE with this lens!! It is so much fun to experiment with the various creative apertures and to even leave the lens wide open, for a very dreamy effect. I am about to purchase a diopter so that I can do a bit of macro work with it and will upload some images after I do. In the meantime, I've attached two of the first taken with this lens.
