ASUS ZenFone 5Q overview

  • 1Description

For the mobile photography lover, the ZenFone 5Q Dual-SIM 64GB Smartphone from ASUS has you covered with its unique 4-camera system. In addition to a 16MP rear camera and a 20MP front-facing camera, each side of the phone has an additional second wide-angle camera. Both wide-angle cameras have a 120-degree wide-angle field of view. Take selfies that includes all your friends and capture more dramatic landscape photos. The 5Q also has a host of other camera features to give you the ability to get the exact shots you're looking for.

The ZenFone 5Q might be photo-forward, but ASUS knows you also use your smartphone for entertainment. Games and streaming videos can enjoy the 6" FHD 2160 x 1080 display, with a cinematic 18:9 widescreen aspect ratio. The display is constructed to go edge-to-edge, packing those six inches into a compact, pocket-friendly frame.

Running the Android 7 Nougat operating system, this phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 Octa-Core processor and 4GB of RAM. You can store your apps, 120-degree selfies, and 4K vids on 64GB of built-in storage, which can be expanded via an (optional) microSD card up to 2TB in size.

This phone is unlocked and compatible with GSM/4G LTE networks. If you travel a lot or have a separate work number, you can take advantage of the Dual SIM slots to access both accounts. You get three SIM slots, so if you want to upgrade the 5Q's storage capacity, you don't have to sacrifice a SIM slot. Connect to the internet and other devices with built-in 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac 2.4+5 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2. The ZenFone 5Q also supports NFC technology for making phone-to-phone data transfers, or mobile payments via Google Pay.

Android 7 Nougat
The Android operating system integrates heavily with Google's services. Using the card-based Google Now, Android quickly surfaces information for you whenever you need it, powered by the same Knowledge Engine that runs Google's web search. It's a personalized and customizable OS, allowing you to add your favorite apps or widgets to your homescreen. You can even download new themes using the Google Play Store, which offers access to more than one million apps, games, books, music, movies, and more. Android 7.0 Nougat adds major productivity capabilities to the operating system in the form of a multi-window view, which allows for two apps to be placed onscreen at a time. An improved notification system allows you to interact with texts and emails right from your notification pane - without needing to open the app. Other features include file-based encryption, a Data Saver mode, the ability to scale text and icons to better suit your phone's screen, and more.
GSM / 4G LTE Wireless Connectivity
This phone is designed to work on select GSM networks and is 4G LTE capable. LTE is an advanced cellular network data protocol capable of data speeds so fast that they compete with wired broadband Internet providers. With an LTE connection, this phone should have no problem streaming HD video, downloading apps, uploading photos, or anything else that requires a high-speed data connection. The phone is also backwards compatible with 3G and 2G data for instances when you can't get LTE. In addition to cellular wireless, this phone also features Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Note: Not compatible with all cellular networks. Please make sure your provider uses a frequency or band that this phone supports. You can check which bands this phone works with in the Specifications.
North American Variant / US Compatible LTE
The ZenFone 5Q is a US variant. The ZenFone 5Q's LTE radio is tuned to frequencies that are most often used in the United States and North America. It can also be used in other parts of the world; however, LTE access may be limited or unsupported, depending on the network. To ensure this phone will work with your carrier please check to make sure the frequencies your carrier uses are supported by this phone. The full list of compatible carrier frequencies can be found here, the frequencies this phone supports can be found in the product specs.
Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS)
Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) allows you to lower your mobile costs when traveling while staying connected. Once your SIM cards are installed, you will be able to receive phone calls and text messages from either without needing to manually choose which one is active. When you want to make a call or send an SMS message, you can select the correct SIM card. When one SIM card is being used for a phone call, the other will not be active until you hang up. Operator charges may apply.
Additional Photo & Video Features
ASUS continues the photo love with ASUS PixelMaster technology, which is designed to give you beautiful bokeh for your portraits., and automatic HDR and low-light optimizations, which takes the guesswork out of getting high-quality, high-contrast shots in nearly any lighting condition. The rear camera is also capable of focusing on your subjects in approx. 0.03 seconds with phase-detection autofocus, helping you capture every moment. If you want the ultimate control of your snapshots, use Pro Mode for DSLR-like functionality of the ZenFone 5Q's settings.

ASUS has also put in functionality to help make you, and everyone else, look their best when you post your pics on social media. Utilize the 10-level beauty mode to enhance everyone's features, and the Softlight LED flash is designed to illuminate your selfies without being too harsh.

When it comes to full-motion video, the rear camera can produce crisp and detailed Ultra HD 4K clips, while the front-facing camera can capture Full HD 1080p selfie videos. If you drop your resolution down to Full HD 1080p on the rear camera, you get to use electronic image stabilization to help keep the jitter out of your movies.
Keep Your Data Secure
The ZenFone 5Q protects your information with both facial-recognition and a built-in rear fingerprint sensor. The facial-recognition will unlock your phone if it detects your face but will not only keep your phone locked if it detects another person's face, but will also hide your lock screen's notifications. The fingerprint sensor has been designed to be able to open your phone in approximately 0.3 seconds, and damp fingerprint recognition helps unlock your phone on a rainy day.

ASUS ZenFone 5Q reviews

ZenFone 5Q Dual-SIM 64GB Smartphone (Unlocked, Black) is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice hardware, not so good software This phone looks very nice. Not that it matters too much, because you cannot use it without a case. It is all glass which makes it too slippery to leave on a surface that is not perfectly flat and leveled. Fortunately, it comes with a clear case, so you can protect it right away. Hardware-wise, it is pretty good. The 64 GB of storage gives it plenty of space, the processor is fast, the screen is bright and sharp, the fingerprint sensor works well, call quality is very good, it has NFC, so it can be used for Android Pay, and camera is OK. From a hardware point of view, probably the weakest point is the camera, but this is true of any phone in this price range. While pictures are very good in bright light, they are not so good in low light, with blurriness and noise. Like I said, I don't know any phone in this price range with really good cameras. If perfect photo is what you're after, look for a flagship. The 3.5mm jack allows me to use my Bose QC25 headphones without the need of weird dongles. It comes with earbuds, but I have not tried those. For charging, a micro USB works great. I don't understand why some people want USB-C so badly. It won't give you any real advantage over micro USB, except for not having to care which way you plug it in. But what your'e trading for it is that all your chargers and cables become obsolete. One weird thing about this phone, though, is that the micro USB seems backwards (or upside down) when compared to the most common arrangement: In this phone, the wider side of the connector is on the front (closer to the screen), with the narrower closer to the back of the phone. Keep this in mind when plugging in a cable other than the one that came with the phone. One thing that is missing is Turbo Charge (fast charging). But because the battery lasts me the whole day with around 50% at the end of the day, this is not a real problem So far I'd give this phone 4.5 stars, based on the hardware alone. But when things start going downhill is with the software. This phone is replacing my Moto X Pure (2015), and we used several Moto G phones in the family (from the G1 to the G4), so I will be comparing this phone with Motorola. I did not purchase a Moto to replace my old one because they are starting to fall behind in hardware specs (either lacking NFC in all G models sold in the US or going up only to 32 GB of storage in the X4, plus using lower-end processors). Maybe they will be back in the game with the new announcements expected for August 2nd. Back to my review, this is what I don;t like: First of all, the 5Q was announced with Android Oreo, but it is running Nougat. While I don't know what advantages Oreo may have over Nougat, the lack of a specific date for this update projects the image of a product abandoned already at launch. I didn't like the Zen UI launcher, so I installed the Google Now launcher, I feel much more at home. I miss Moto Actions (double chop for flashlight and double twist to open the camera). Both of these allow you to open those apps with only one hand. The screen shows some colors washed out. It doesn't seem to me like this is coming from low quality hardware, but more from a wrong palette at the time of rendering. I'm saying this because it is not like the whole screen is washed out, but some specific colors seem off. Pictures look good, though. Another thing that I miss from Moto is the display when the phone is asleep. In the Moto you get these notification icons so you know what notifications are pending before turning the screen fully on. The 5Q does not do this, but also if the screen is off and you get an e-mail or other notifications, the phone will vibrate or emit a sound, and the notification LED will start flashing, but you won't know what the notification is until you reach for your phone and turn on the screen with the power button (double-tapping the screen also works). Another built-in app that I don't like is the phone app. In the Moto when you open the app, you can set the default to your favorites. That way, you open the app and dial one of those contacts. The 5Q does not give you that option. Opening the phone app always takes you to a screen with the dial pad and the last 3 entries of your call log. If the contact you want to dial is not in those 3, there goes another 1 or 2 touches before you can dial. Also with the Moto X I was able to wake the phone with my voice. Not with this one. Although I can unlock it with my voice, the screen has to be on (again, reaching for the phone and double tapping or pressing the power button). Don't get me wrong, the phone is nice and perfectly usable and I will be keeping it, but everything seems to take one more step than the way it used to be with the Moto X.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A very good buy, without a doubt! I haven't found a single issue that I can lament about as yet. And I am heavily into the technology field. Excellent Wifi capabilities, great sound, excellent camera, best of all shopping experience with B&H Photo is awesome.
