The device is a GPS navigator with compass and bearing capabilities, basic grid waypoint marking and breadcrumb trails, and sophisticated on-map guidance. Aviators can pair the inReach Mini with a smartphone or tablet running the Garmin Pilot app for communication and to drive a geo-referenced aircraft position symbol on your tablet's moving map display, as well as provide tracking of your flight to your followers on the ground. The inReach Mini is a supported device for the Lockheed Martin Flight Services (LMFS) Adverse Condition Alerting Service (ACAS), Surveillance-Enhanced Search and Rescue (SE-SAR), and Enhanced Special Reporting Services (eSRS).

Garmin inReach Mini Reviews

Small, yet so important

This little piece of equipment lowers my families anxiety when I am out of cell phone tower territory. It also provides me with assurance that if I get in to trouble, I have the means to reach out for help. A small price to pay in the big scheme of things.

Great Device

I purchased this specifically so I could communicate to family members when I’m on my off-the-grid excursions.  I subscribed to the Safety Plan with an annual contract.   I used it for the first time yesterday in a deep narrow canyon (West Fork, AZ).  At the parking lot, where I did have a cell signal, I was able send out a test message in about 30 seconds.  I received an immediate response back.  Later, when I was deep in the canyon with a poor GPS signal as indicated on the inReach, I sent out a couple of preset messages which took approximately 3 minutes.  The responses I received were almost immediate.  Later, with my inReach connected to my phone via Bluetooth, I typed a custom text message on my phone and sent it out through the inReach, very slick. I clipped the unit to my backpack and left it on the entire time I was hiking in the canyon (about 5 hours) just to test the battery performance.  When I returned to the parking lot, I had consumed 24% of the battery capacity which was better than I expected due to the poor GPS signal in the canyon.  Normally I’ll leave it off until I’m ready to send/receive messages.  The display is fantastic, even in direct sunlight it is easy to read.  The unit seems very robust the menus are easy and logical to navigate.  This device works extremely well and as advertised. The Mini inReach is perfect for me since I already carry an Oregon 600 GPS.   It is well worth the cost and I think subscription plans are reasonably priced.

Good for what it does

Bought this for off the grid dirt bike riding out west. Needed something to signal that either A) I am okay or B) send help now! It tracks the route well and sends a lot of good info (lat-long, map etc) in the event of a problem. Was hoping that the bluetooth connection with a smartphone would allow text messages, but that does not seem to be the case with the mini. You only get to select preprogrammed messages or set some up in advance on your computer (linked with bluetooth).  As usual the Garmin software is proprietary and not all intuitive to use. Eventually you get used to it, but unless you use it a lot, it is very frustrating.

Pairs easily with my phone and runs well with the Earthmate app. I've taken it on a few backcountry excursions and find it very light and easy to use.

Does what it should at a fraction of the size and weight

Great little device for backcountry safety and family peace of mind. Small, fits in the palm of you hand. Light weight at only 3.5 ounces. Seems sturdy, handy carabiner clip to attach to a pack strap or belt. It paired effortlessly with my smart phone, which is really what makes this device easier to use and adds the ability to use maps through their app. However, I did test the unit without the cell connection and it works great, just is time consuming to manually type in text. The great thing is you can pre-program a bunch of text messages to cover most situations so all you have to do is select the message. You will need a computer to access the Inreach website to type out those messages then link the device to your USB port with the provided cable to manually synch the device. Yes, you will need to pick a plan in order for it to work. Bring your patience when activating the device if you are buying shortly after release, there activation que is long at the moment. It took 4 hours for me to complete the process and one call to customer service, who were great. Overall, this is the device I have been waiting for and I am pleased with the product.

Amazing product - recommended

I was lucky enough to receive a Garmin inReach Mini from the first batch that made it to B&H. I've been testing the unit for the past month in advance of a trip to fairly remote areas of South America. I am traveling on my own and want to have some sort of reliable communication while in areas without cell coverage. I'm a ham operator and could have brought portable gear with me - but applying for local operating licenses plus the uncertainties of shortwave communication made that option unattractive. The inReach mini is very small - it easily fits in a shirt pocket - and is very light. Its interface is reminiscent of units from the late 1990s, but it appears to reliably interface with my iPhone. I would imagine that I would actually compose a message on the Mini only if my iPhone were to fail, as the interface to compose text messages is cumbersome. I would recommend purchasing the unit and getting used to it before a trip, as there are certain aspects to which one needs to get accustomed. While one nominally has an e-mail address associated with the unit, it can receive e-mails or texts only through a web portal (where you can provide others an address and a password) or in response to a message that you have sent. I view this as a positive - no spam. In practice, I find that it takes a couple of minutes for a message to be transmitted - so you likely won't be communicating in real time. That said, I would rather wait five minutes for my message to go through than to be without communication. Garmin states that the MIni has a battery life of approximately fifty hours. Based on my limited experience, this seems optimistic. In ten hours of use, with the unit sharing my location to the cloud every ten minutes, my battery went from 90% to 38%. I plan on carrying a spare battery to provide backup power to both my phone and the micro USB-equipped inReach Mini. In all, I am very pleased with my purchase and enthusiastically recommend the product.

Same product as anywhere else, but at the best lowest price. Fast shipping! Unit works perfectly. Nothing to do with BH but FYI this safety gps requires a yearly and monthly subscription from garmin if you want to use it as intended. This is the smaller handheld version and can't do much on the unit itself but can link your phone to it and use the app if you have service to view maps and such. It's a great mini option.

too complicated

I'm sure that it is a fine device, and that many of the issues I have with it are operator related. So from a technical challenged individual - it's way too complicated. And I understand why Garmin has such a great service department since their instruction book doesn't cover much of any operation procedures they have to have smart people there to answer questions and on-line-help department.

question

Will the GPS function work with a subscription?
Asked by: Frank Y.
This unit does not display standard GPS data to the user. The display primarily displays the communications/text information to the user. GPS usage is better suited to a traditional handheld GPS or an external GPS receiver for a phone/tablet.
