  • Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon

The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon is a standard zoom lens designed especially for DSLRs with APS-C-sized image sensors. This lens has a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 25.5-105mm, providing wide-angle to portrait-length angles of view for use in everyday shooting situations.

This lens features a fast f/2.8-4 maximum aperture to help better control your focus plane and to aid in low-light shooting. A built-in Optical Stabilizer also helps in low-light situations by providing a four-stop reduction in the appearance of camera shake, which is ideally suited for macro and telephoto shooting as well. The Hyper Sonic AF Motor delivers fast, smooth, and quiet auto focusing that greatly benefits video applications. The integration of two FLD, one SLD, and three aspherical lenses in the construction helps to reduce the effects of chromatic and chromatic axial aberrations, and Super Multi-Layer coated elements help to increase contrast for sharp, clear imagery.

As part of Sigma's new Contemporary line of lenses, this lens is designed using Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) materials to help reduce the overall weight and size of the lens barrel by about 30% without compromising on optical integrity, rigidity, or overall durability.

For updating lens firmware and fine-tuning its nuances to best-suit your personal shooting, this lens is compatible with the Sigma USB Dock. The dock allows you to specify certain parameters and other settings through the Sigma Optimization Pro software, such as AF speed and focusing limitations.

    Contemporary Lens Line
This lens is the first lens produced as part of Sigma's Contemporary line; deeming it lightweight and compact while still exhibiting high optical performance. This lens' wide range of focal lengths makes is suitable for a variety of shooting applications. Utilizing a smaller OS unit and an optimized distribution of optical and electronic elements, the size of the lens barrel is able to be reduced in size by approximately 30%. This reduction in weight is also afforded in part through the use of TSC materials in the barrel construction. This material offers high durability and rigidity but with less bulk than metal components.
    Macro Shooting Capabilities
This lens features a maximum magnification of 1:2.8 and a minimum focus distance of 8.7" / 22cm, giving a working distance of just 2.2" / 5.5cm when shooting at the 70mm focal length.
    Optimized Lens Construction
Two FLD (F Low Dispersion) glass elements, one SLD (Super Low Dispersion) glass element, and three aspherical glass elements, including a double-sided aspherical lens, are integrated into the lens' construction to help improve overall image quality. The combination of these elements provides a reduction in both chromatic and axial chromatic aberrations throughout the focusing and zoom ranges. A Super Multi-Layer Coating is also applied to lens surfaces to reduce the appearance of lens flare and ghosting, which helps to maintain image contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
    Hyper Sonic AF Motor
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) provides fast, quiet, and smooth auto focusing that is well-suited for use with video applications.
    Optical Stabilizer
The OS (Optical Stabilizer) system is incorporated into the lens to provide a four-stop-equivalent reduction in the appearance of camera shake. This enables greater handheld shooting possibilities when working in low-lit situations, at longer focal lengths, and when working with macro subjects.
    USB Dock
Compatible with Sigma's USB Dock and Sigma Optimization Pro software for fine-tuning your lens' performance, updating its firmware, and better suiting it to your needs.
    Other Features
    • A large maximum aperture of f/2.8-4 helps with low-light photography and also offers greater control over your focus plane for selective focus shooting.
    • A brass bayonet mount provides reinforced durability at the connection point between the lens and your camera.

  • Hoya 72mm Digital Filter Kit II

The Hoya 72mm Digital Filter Kit II includes a UV (C) HMC filter, a circular polarizer filter, and a 3-stop neutral density filter in a convenient filter pouch. This kit provides everything necessary to get started with filtration for your digital camera.

The UV (C) filter is a multi-coated filter with a slim mounting ring. This makes it useful for wide-angle lenses to avoid potential vignetting. Also, the UV filter itself is a general use, clear filter that helps to absorb ultraviolet light. No additional coloration or contrast is provided, allowing you to pair this filter with others. It is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.

Hoya HMC filters are multi-coated for reducing flare, ghosting, and reflections on the filter surface. As a result, over 97% light transmission is possible, providing you with additional contrast and high color fidelity.

A circular polarizer filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

A neutral density filter has several uses and offers the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. They have no effect on color balance. This filter offers a filter factor of 0.9, equivalent to 3 stops of light.

    UV Filter

Absorbs UV light, which can cause outdoor photos to appear hazy and indistinct
Clear filter provides no additional coloration or contrast, allowing you to pair this filter with others
Works as general protection filter to reduce dust, moisture, and scratches from reaching lens elements.
HMC multi-coating help to reduce flare, ghosting, and reflections on the filter surface for greater contrast and color fidelity. Greater than 97% light transmission is possible, providing additional contrast and high color fidelity.

    Circular Polarizer Filter

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface
Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features

    Neutral Density Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
    8x = ND 0.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO 1/8)

Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.0 reviews

17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 64.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from (Almost) A fantastic lens, Nikon mount in my case Well made lens, should last for the long haul. This is my only Sigma lens, I own many Nikon's. I used this lens on the D500; Sharpness, color and contrast is fantastic, better than expected. Very surprised that the images are exposed dead on and actually sharper than the wonderful Nikon 24-120. Cons: The lens zoom is backward twist to all the Nikon's, and the manual focus ring spins as the lens hunts auto focuses. Using Nikon's exclusively for years, that backward zoom twist is a challenge to manage. This $500 lens should not spin the focus ting, internal focus is expected. But if you can live with the two cons, you will like the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good general purpose lens I was attracted to the Sigma 17-70mm by its f2.8-4 aperture range and several positive reviews. I have used the lens with my Nikon D7100 and D3200. The lens is sharper than both the 18-55mm and 16-85mm Nikkors. The zoom ring is very smooth and shows no sign of creeping with the lens pointed up or down. The focus ring does rotate when auto-focusing but this has not caused any problems. The lens focuses extremely close, down to 8.6. With the lens zoomed out 70mm and focused at 7.2 there is only about 1.5 from the front of the lens and the subject, making difficult to light the subject. Overall it is an excellent lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Effective, but not without shortcomings. General purpose lens for crop sensor walk about. Offering a good range (albeit less than the Nikon 16-85) with excellent sharpness, resolution and color in the center of the image at all FL's. However, on the wider end of things, you cannot get rid of slightly softer sides, even at F9-F11 (the sweet spot for the 17 - 20mm focal lengths). Better sharpness in the center and intermediate areas that even the 17-55 Nikon. The macro is good too, offering some creative freedom that the Nikon does not offer. Unlike most Sigma lenses I have owned (about 20), this is the first to hit focus on just about every shot. AF is fast and silent (nearly), and the OS offers great handhold ability when needed. Overall conclusion then: Someone coming from the Nikon 16-85 will find this a good step up IMO, and even from the Nikon 17-55/2.8 it offers some performance benefits.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Day and Night Performer This is my first Sigma product which I paired up with a D5300. I have owned this lens for approximately three weeks and I have tested its performance in both daylight and at night. Out-of-focus areas have a soft satin appearance. I found that though at its widest the aperture is f2.8, it appears that f4 is the sweet spot throughout the focal range. At night it struggled a couple of times to focus, but once it got the hang of it it did not miss-fire again. I'm very pleased with its field performance and the image quality that followed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 Macro OS HSM Lens I bought this lens as an upgrade from the Nikon 18-55mm kit lens, for a Nikon D5200. The auto-focus is fast, and nearly silent. This lens has some barrel distortion, which is greatest at 17mm, and decreases as you zoom out, but it is easily corrected in Lightroom, so shouldn't be an issue. I haven't compared the old Nikon lens it replaced (18-55mm f/3.5) with an identical photo situation, but my impression so far is that it is a sharper lens. It isn't heavy at all, and does not interfere with the camera's built in flash (no shadow). The camera settings for the attached spillway image are: iso100, f/22 (with a .8ND filter), 1/2 second,& 24mm. For the Croton River: iso100, f/22,1/6sec, 70mm. Both shots had a Hoya.8ND filter mounted on the lens, and the camera was on a tripod.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Upgrade for my everyday walk about lens. This is my first Sigma lens. I was looking for a reasonable priced upgrade for my Nikon 18-70 3.5. I got the Nikon as a kit lens for my first D70 camera. It has been a relatively good lens for a kit lens. I finally decided on the upgrade to the Sigma 17-70 2.8 which turned out to be a good decision for me. The feel of the lens is much more robust than the Nikon. The focus after some testing was spot on. The focus is quick and quiet. The zoom ring is if anything a bit more stiff than the Nikon. I actually find this to be a better feel for me. It just feels more like the other Pro lens that I am using. The images so far have been excellent and overall I feel much sharper than the Nikon. I also love the macro capabilities of this lens. My impression is that for the money, this is a great upgrade to my kit lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Upgrade I purchased this lens to upgrade from my D3200s kit lens. While the Nikon 15-55 is an Ok starting point this blows away expectations. At work I use the Tamron 12-50 with the constant 2.8 and honestly this lens is leagues sharper, with a much more accurate and faster auto focus.I feel like this lens would be very versatile, well versed for portraits and events. The decently fast aperture, impressive build quality and impressive image quality ensure this lens fights above it's weight class.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fine 'walk around' lens I recently took stock of my gear and decided that given a couple of upcoming trips where I wouldn't care to lug around my whole bag, that I would reconsider my 'walk around' lens. For a number of years that's been a Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom. It's a fine lens and I have no truly serious complaints about it. However, it is heavy and does suffer from barrel creep and like a lot of lenses, the hood wants to come off.I also recognized that I rarely used it fully zoomed and also that I did occassionally have some interest in doing macro photography. So, considering these needs I reviewed available walk around zoom lenses for my Nikon D90 and decided to give the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro a try. I typically like to shoot nature close ups, landscapes and will be doing urban architecture with it on an upcoming trip and find that so far, it provides a nice balance of functions.Focusing is smooth, rapid and precise as well as being very quiet. Unlike the reports of other users, I have not experienced the reported fuzzy edges or barrelling effects in my limited use.It seems sturdy and well constructed. The lens hood snaps on preventing it from coming off when you have the camera slung lens down (as I often do) and it does not seem to suffer from lens creep. Also it doesn't seem to get lens barrel shadowing when shot using the pop up flash on the camera (something I rarely do).All in all, a good purchase and I would recommend it to other photo enthusiast types. I've attached two images; a hibiscus bloom shot at 2.8 at 17mm from about 3 inches, and a sundown shot, f10 at 50mm.
