Assembled for the aspiring APS-C-format outdoor photographer, the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens Landscape Kit from B&H comprises everything needed, besides a camera, to begin photographing landscapes. Included in this kit is the versatile standard zoom lens, a tripod and ball head, a backpack, a remote shutter release, a shoe mount bubble level, and a 77mm filter kit.

    A tremendously flexible standard zoom for APS-C-format DSLRs, the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM from Canon pairs the 27.2-88mm equivalent focal length range with a bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture. Benefitting this design is a sophisticated optical layout, which includes both Ultra-Low Dispersion glass and aspherical elements to significantly reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for improved clarity and sharpness throughout the zoom range. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to individual elements to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast when working in bright environments.

    The Hoya 77mm Digital Filter Kit II includes a UV (C) HMC filter, a circular polarizer filter, and a 3-stop neutral density filter in a convenient filter pouch. This kit provides everything necessary to get started with filtration for your digital camera.

    The UV (C) filter is a multi-coated filter with a slim mounting ring. This makes it useful for wide-angle lenses to avoid potential vignetting. Also, the UV filter itself is a general use, clear filter that helps to absorb ultraviolet light. No additional coloration or contrast is provided, allowing you to pair this filter with others. It is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.

    Hoya HMC filters are multi-coated for reducing flare, ghosting, and reflections on the filter surface. As a result, over 97% light transmission is possible, providing you with additional contrast and high color fidelity.

    A circular polarizer filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

    A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

    A neutral density filter has several uses and offers the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. They have no effect on color balance. This filter offers a filter factor of 0.9, equivalent to 3 stops of light.

    UV Filter

    Absorbs UV light, which can cause outdoor photos to appear hazy and indistinct

Rated 5 out of 5 by from super sharp a great walk around lens for your d cameras....remember this will NOT work on full frame bodies...aside from that, i would say sharpness is that of an L series and personally, i find it sharper than my 24-70 L lens..maybe part of that is due to IS...a welcome addition to any lens....great saturation of colors...optimal aperture is 4.0 or 5.6, but at 2.8 speed, i have no complaints..lens has a nice weight to it and usm is quick and accurate....lens hood is ridiculously expensive at $50 plus for piece of plastic and there is vignetting of built in flash at wide end of zoom...all in all, if you can afford it, its worth it....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens takes great pictures I was looking for a lens that was both fast and also wide enough to be a great general purpose lens that would be mounted on my camera the majority of the time. This lens fits both criteria perfectly. I had a hard time deciding between this 17-55 and the 24-70 f/2.8 L. Both are fast enough but I ultimately wanted the extra width (17mm vs. 24mm). The extra quality of the L-series lens was hard to give up, but I am very happy with the build quality of the 17-55 f/2.8. It feels as heavy and robust as the 24-70...it is definitely not a cheaply made lens. The autofucus is fantastic (fast and quiet) and this lens takes great pictures. You won't be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Lens I read all the negative on this lens but after carefully weighing my options, I purchased it and I have to say, I'm happy I did. Let me say first that it should be obvious that any zoom lens will have dust issues as they get older. Pumping the focal length in and out will carry dust into the lens body. It's cant be helped. If there was some unfortunate folks that got a lens that didn't live up to the Canon name, well that's why we buy from reputable sources, warranties. All and all I'm ultra pleased with this lens, wishing there were more constant aperture, internal focus , fast lenses in the line up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best APS-C lens available This lens is the apex of the crop sensor camera lenses. The 2.8 aperture, IS (image stabilization), and good quality makes it the best lens I can think to get. I would have purchased an EF mount lens if there had been one with IS and all other features. The zooming is a little less smooth than I would want from a lens of this price but it's one of the only faults I can find. You may have read the lens gets dust inside on the front element. It's true. I have dust inside mine after 4-5 weeks. I hope it does not get worse. Canon needs to fix this "leak" but all things considered...great, great lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE I have written a review before but I just wanted to chime in again because I've had the lens almost 2 years now. I still love it! THE ONLY thing I don't like is that when I upgrade to FF I wont be able to use it. I have found it's sweet spot (sharpest point) for me is with an aprature of f 3.2 although I have got some great shots at 2.8 as well. I'll share couple photos. The lens creep doesn't bother me as it's not super long and therefor doesn't drop too hard. I have a habit if holding my camera in an upward position when I'm walking around so, I rarely notice it. The weight isn't too bad. You get used to it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Update to 3/23/2010 entry Here's an update to my entry a little over a year ago. I'd like to reiterate my commentary on the build quality. I was taking some pictures of an old family portrait that was laying flat on the kitchen table with the camera pointed down to get the picture. The front len bezel came apart and landed on the portrait. Fortunately the glass wasn't scratched . . Had the Canon guys not put it back together correctly when they cleaned the excessive dust out of in March of 2010? I can't answer that, but still stick to my "poor build quality" assessment, especially for a lens that costs as much as this one does.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of canons Best After about a year of use, mostly weddings, I would say this is a very nice lens. I use two lenses in my work, this lens and the canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS. The blur is perfect and low light is no problem for either. I use a canon 50D and the crop factor (1.6) works well with both. The quality of photos under all conditions has been nothing less than perfect. Many weddings I only use the 17-55 and leave the 70-200 in the bag for a back up. The size, weight, and balance are nice. Portraits are perfect. Has zoom, IS, 2.8, fast focus, and great performance, but should be offered in a L seies for weather and dust. No problems yet but for the money it could be built better. Considering the choices Canon offers, It is a must have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from fast and sharp I have been using this lens on my 60D for the past year. It is fast and sharp. I have used it in a few weddings. I love the wide angle and the ability to also get nice and close. 1.2 feet!!!! Love it! I have had some chromatic aberration when shooting into harsh light but nothing a little Lightroom cant fix. I keep this lens on my body 90% of the time. Also use it for families, children, portraits and action shots of my kids and horses. Always nice color and clearity! Even at a farther distance and even at 2.8. Its a bit heavy but you get used it. Also takes nice video. I am very happy with this purchase! Best lens out there for a crop frame body.
