  • Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art Lens for Canon EF

A versatile zoom for everyday shooting, the Canon EF-mount 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Lens from Sigma covers a useful wide-angle to portrait-length range of focal lengths to suit shooting in a variety of environments. As part of the esteemed Art series of lenses, a sophisticated optical design is used that incorporates three SLD elements and four aspherical elements to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, as well as color fringing, distortions, and other anomalies for greater clarity and sharpness. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to suppress lens flare and ghosting for accurate color fidelity and high contrast, and a protective coating has been applied to the front element, too, to benefit working in harsh climates. Additionally, extending its versatility, a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range as well as greater control over depth of field.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the lens sports a Hyper Sonic Motor to produce quick, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. An Optical Stabilizer also benefits handheld shooting by minimizing the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery. The physical design utilizes Thermally Stable Composite material for durability in a wide range of environments, and a brass bayonet mount also offers rigidity and mounting precision.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Standard zoom lens is designed for full-frame-format Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however it can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 38.4-112mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements and four aspherical elements are featured in the optical design and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy, as well as spherical aberrations for reduced distortion and improved sharpness throughout the zoom range.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Front lens element has been treated with a water- and oil-repellent coating to benefit working in harsh environmental conditions.
Nine-blade rounded diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

  • Hoya 77mm Digital Filter Kit II

The Hoya 77mm Digital Filter Kit II includes a UV (C) HMC filter, a circular polarizer filter, and a 3-stop neutral density filter in a convenient filter pouch. This kit provides everything necessary to get started with filtration for your digital camera.

The UV (C) filter is a multi-coated filter with a slim mounting ring. This makes it useful for wide-angle lenses to avoid potential vignetting. Also, the UV filter itself is a general use, clear filter that helps to absorb ultraviolet light. No additional coloration or contrast is provided, allowing you to pair this filter with others. It is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.

Hoya HMC filters are multi-coated for reducing flare, ghosting, and reflections on the filter surface. As a result, over 97% light transmission is possible, providing you with additional contrast and high color fidelity.

A circular polarizer filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

A neutral density filter has several uses and offers the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. They have no effect on color balance. This filter offers a filter factor of 0.9, equivalent to 3 stops of light.

    UV Filter

Absorbs UV light, which can cause outdoor photos to appear hazy and indistinct
Clear filter provides no additional coloration or contrast, allowing you to pair this filter with others
Works as general protection filter to reduce dust, moisture, and scratches from reaching lens elements.
HMC multi-coating help to reduce flare, ghosting, and reflections on the filter surface for greater contrast and color fidelity. Greater than 97% light transmission is possible, providing additional contrast and high color fidelity.

    Circular Polarizer Filter

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface
Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features

    Neutral Density Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
    8x = ND 0.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO 1/8)

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 reviews

24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and sharp I love this lens. Only having it for two weeks now, it is one of my favorite lenses I've ever used. Especially at 70mm for portraits it looks amazing. It works perfectly with my 6D MKII, no focus issues so far. The side switches are nice, could imagine them getting moved when put in a bag, they are not has rigid as other lenses I've used. But I've never accidentally changed them. So really not a big deal. The casing of the lens is a very solid metal. It feels great in the hand. Rubber grips are nice. It's a little heavy, but that's because of the great glass. As you can see, I really have no complaints about this lens.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed in this lens I was very excited about the release of this lens and pre-ordered it. I spend the last two days working with it - taking over 100 photos. Not one of them was in focus. I calibrated the lens several times with micro adjustments and the focus was still soft. I get tack sharp photos with my 50mm so it's not me or my camera. I don't know if I got a lemon or not but I am returning it to B&H. Sigma's solution when I contacted them was to send the lens and my camera to them for calibration. No way am I going to ship my 5D across the country. I'm going to bite the bullet and buy the Canon version.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great option to Canon 24-70L Focuses great in low light. A bit heavy but once you feel the lens in your hands you feel the quality in build. Using on a 5d Mark IV. Very sharp, great colors. Highly impressed in my first week of using.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely sharp and versatile lens I got my copy last week and has been thoroughly happy with this lens so far. I used it with my 5D III. It is a great walkabout lens for taking landscape pictures and also great for taking portrait shots. Auto-focus is fast and accurate and the lens stabilisation helps a lot as there is no in body stabilisation in 5D III. I was able to shoot handheld at shutter speed of 1/30 and still get great image. Am loving it so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ballin' on a Budget I've been a huge supporter of using prime lenses for getting the best optical quality possible. Working on some fast paced sets, changing lenses isn't always possible, and I've been searching for the perfect zoom alternative for some time. I've used the Canon 24-105 f4L IS mk ii, and Canon 24-70 f2.8L mk ii. I found that neither of them fit the bill for my use in high resolution commercial photography (shot on the 5DSR). This new Sigma lens has answered all of my needs, while coming in at a lower pricepoint than Canon's version. I tested this lens at f2.8 and it holds up incredibly well as shown on the attached shots. This, along with a few other Sigma ART lenses will have a spot in my Pelican case for many years. The only slightly negative remarks I would have are the need to buy a few new filters for the 82mm threads, and the IS is very slightly more audible than Canon's. Neither of these amount to subtracting a star from this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens This is a very sharp lens. However, the auto focus required extensive tuning using Sigma Optimization Pro. It is comparable to the similar Canon with the addition of stabilization which is important when using the high resolution sensor of a 5Ds. Judging from some of the other reviews and my previous experience, there is variation among lenses. The one that I have is excellent. The only minus is its weight. But for an all-purpose lens on the 5Ds, it is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Overall - Utterly Smooth, Quiet and Sharp, but average OS I really love the feel of this lens. I personally like lenses with some weight to them, making them feel stronger in my hands. The sharpness is amazing, I was using Canon 28-70 L 2.8 before. Images are much sharper with the Sigma. Autofocus is on point, silent, smooth and very quick. I love the bokeh, very buttery beautiful. One downfall - Image Stabilizer/Optical Stabilization is average. I don't shoot in low light situations where I would need it very often. I do shoot video often with the lens, so I really really wish I was more satisfied with the IS/OS during hand held filming. If you rely on the IS/OS, then this may not be the lens for you.Typically, with mid-range lenses I feel you don't need much OS unless you are shooting under 1/60 in dark conditions. This lens does just enough OS for slight camera shake down to around 1/10. (see images) Overall, I am very satisfied with the Sigma lens. I capture great photos. This lens is utterly smooth, quiet and sharp.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for Sony E-mount with the Sigma MC-11 adapter So I sold my Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L II and bought this as soon as preorders were available. Shooting on the Sony a7sii was fine with the Canon, but I was stuck doing manual focus constantly. Fine for video, but if I wanted to also shoot some event photography, the autofocus would be a lot faster for stills. The Sigma ART line with that sweet, sweet MC-11 adapter gives me all of the native-like autofocus capabilities I wanted. It's big. Heavy. Wider at the base than the Canon, and you can feel it. This thing is not messing around. Most likely because of the stabilizer inside that the Canon version was missing. In fact, it looks comically large and front-heavy on my a7sII without an additional battery grip. With the battery grip, it evens out a bit and feels more natural. The focus throw is comparable to the Canon (so, not incredible, but decent if you're used to using a manual zoom DSLR focus ring). One thing to be aware of is that the zoom ring is actually in front of the focus ring. It's a little weird, but I think with a little bit of practice and handling, it won't be any issue. Certainly not as jarring as trying to manually focus a Tamron or Nikon lens when you are used to rotating your focus rings a certain way. Optically- I have no complaints. That being said, I'm not taking 50-megapixel photos where I need to blow it up to the size of a building to inspect an ant's antennae. It's certainly sharp enough for my purposes, and I have taken a few stills with it that made me say 'wow.' I will say that chromatic aberration seems to be nonexistent. We tossed the Sigma on a RED Scarlet to pixel-peep at high-contrast black and white edges and didn't see any pink or green anywhere. Also while the bokeh balls aren't as beautifully smooth as some of the ART Primes (duh). The out-of-focus areas blend beautifully in my opinion. Overall, I love it and think it was a solid purchase, especially to pair with the MC-11 mount converter.
