Sony PXW-FS5M2 overview

  • 1Description

This Sony FS5 II ProRes RAW Atomos Kit from B&H is assembled to provide you with a 4K digital cine camera and a 10-bit external monitor that supports 10-bit, 4:2:2 ProRes, ProRes RAW, and DNxHR recording. The camera incorporates a Super35mm-sized sensor that helps create the familiar cinema depth of field, while it also supports HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma), which enables both an SDR (standard dynamic range) and HDR (high dynamic range) in-camera workflow so your images are easily viewable now, and ready for the future. Newly tuned picture tone settings provide improved image control, and the camera allows nine picture presets.

The Atomos Shogun Inferno is a 1500 cd/m² bright monitor and recorder. It is suitable for use in bright interior and exterior locations without a hood. The Shogun Inferno features 12G-SDI connectors that allow it to input UHD 4K signals at up to 60 fps, and it records 10-bit ProRes or DNxHR files on 2.5" SSDs. Its inputs, outputs, and recording capabilities make it well suited for use with the FS5M2.

  • Sony PXW-FS5M2 4K XDCAM Super 35mm Compact Camcorder

Sony's PXW-FS5M2 4K XDCAM Super 35mm Compact Camcorder features a familiar body style with improved capabilities. Hybrid Log Gamma enables both an HDR (high dynamic range) and SDR (standard dynamic range) in-camera workflow for flexibility in post and delivery. Newly tuned picture tone settings provide improved image control.

The camera records internally to dual media card slots and can continuously capture HD at up to 120 fps, with 8-second long bursts at 240 fps. Raw 4K recording is available with the addition of optional external recorders that also allow 4K recording at 50 and 60p.

    High Frame Recoding
The FS5M2 offers high frame rate (HFR) cache recording at Full HD 10-bit 4:2:2 image quality, and a frame rate of up to 240 fps 8-second cache recording on to SDXC cards. The FS5M2 also records continuous 120 fps internally in Full HD. Higher frame rates of 480 and 960 fps are possible at specific resolutions. The FS5M2 delivers slow-motion imagery, including four seconds of 120 fps in 4K and continuous 240 fps in 2K raw when used with a compatible third-party external recorder.
    4K Super 35 Exmor Sensor
The camera is built around a high-sensitivity 4K Super 35 Exmor Sensor that offers fast image readout speeds required for 4K motion picture shooting and super slow motion.
    Variable ND Filter
A built-in electronic variable neutral density (ND) filter expands the depth of field capability of its large format sensor. Unlike conventional optical ND filters, the electronic ND filter can be controlled from 1/4 to 1/128 ND linearly. ND filters can also be set to auto, obviating the need to change filters as lighting conditions change.
    Picture Profiles
Nine picture profiles include ones customized for S-Log2, S-Log3, and a profile specifically tuned to provide vibrant, high contrast visuals. Each profile can be customized to suit your specific requirements and switched between in seconds.
    Clear Image Zoom
This proprietary technology can enlarge the image by an additional 200% in Full HD and 150% in 4K. It is also compatible with fixed focal length lenses, so you can zoom into a scene while using a prime lens.
    Networking
    • Live stream from any event thanks to a choice of Wi-Fi or built-in wired LAN.
    • Control your camera from your smartphone or tablet.
    • Built-in NFC supports one-touch authentication possible with appropriate devices.
    • Be first with breaking news thanks to a built-in wired LAN jack for high-speed FTP transfer of full-resolution content.
    • GPS function automatically records GPS data.

  • Atomos Shogun Inferno 7" 4K HDMI/Quad 3G-SDI/12G-SDI Recording Monitor

The Atomos Shogun Inferno is a 7", 1920 x 1200 on-camera recording monitor that combines 4K recording with a 10-bit FRC panel that supports native display of HDR (log) footage as well as high-brightness viewing of Rec. 709 footage. It utilizes 4K HDMI and 12G-SDI inputs to support clean output signals at resolutions up to UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) at 60 fps, recording it to 2.5" SSDs using 10-bit, 4:2:2 Apple ProRes, and Avid DNxHR codecs. The Inferno, unlike the similar Shogun Flame, supports Quad 3G-SDI input. It even supports DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) raw video streams over SDI from select Sony and Canon cameras, encoding it as ProRes/DNxHR files.

The monitor features 10-bit FRC processing and AtomHDR display technology support a 10-stop brightness range, allowing you to more accurately monitor your log gamma footage without having to view flat, washed-out looking images or use a LUT to compress the dynamic range and color space. The monitor offers built-in presets to accurately translate popular log formats from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, ARRI, RED, and JVC cameras. The settings only affect viewing, with recorded video remained unaltered.

In addition to HDR monitoring, the monitor also offers a High Bright mode for traditional Rec. 709 monitoring. This mode takes advantage of the full 1500 cd/m² brightness to allow for more confident monitoring in bright outdoor environments, even without a sun hood. In HDR mode, use of an optional snap-on sun hood is required, as displaying a wider brightness range reduces the overall brightness of the monitor.

Built to withstand the rigors of production, the Shogun Inferno features built-in protective armor that features silicone-covered corners and chamfered edges. Compared to the original Shogun, the Inferno now features dual Sony L-series battery plates that support battery hot swapping, enabling longer runtimes. For audio recording, the monitor supports balanced XLR inputs with +48V phantom power via an included audio breakout cable. Additional features included genlock/LTC input, SDI/HDMI cross conversion, and a variety of on-screen exposure analysis, framing, and focus assist tools.
