Really Right Stuff TVC-24 Overview

The TVC-24 Versa Mk2 from Really Right Stuff is a lightweight, mid-range Series 2 carbon fiber tripod designed for use in both the field and studio.

Constructed from Really Right Stuff's patented carbon fiber weave, the TVC-24 weighs in at an impressive 3.3 lb and can safely support up to 40 lb. Its 4-section leg design allows the tripod to extend to a maximum height of 49.4" and lower down to a minimum working height of just 3.4".

Quick set-up and break-down is facilitated by easy-to-use twist locks that require just a quarter rotation to unlock and re-lock each leg section. This design also helps to maintain the tripod's slim folded silhouette. Additionally, when traveling with or storing the tripod, the entire support can fold down to just 19.1" in length, small enough to travel or hike with.

Each leg is attached to the tripod's collar via an offset leg joint that helps to evenly distribute heavy loads and maintain the tripod's rigidity. The joints and collar itself are constructed of lightweight anodized aluminum which, aside from lending inherent strength to the tripod, also provides it with natural wear and corrosion resistance. Each one of the three leg joints also feature a ratcheting angle stop that automatically locks into place as the legs are folded downward into "standard" position.

The TVC-24's feet are a unique teardrop shape, which prevents the leg sections from touching the ground at even the lowest height settings and the most unusual angles. Their rubber exterior provides a non-slip grip on nearly any surface and can be used both indoors and outdoors without concern. For users wishing to change the native rubber feet to metal "all-terrain" spikes, a set of metal spikes are available separately.

  • Twist locks with integrated wipers to keep particles out of the locking mechanism, providing better resistance to the elements
  • Improved knurling pattern designed to feel better on your skin
  • Collets replace the old locking gibbs, reducing lock engagement to half the travel to lock and unlock faster with less effort
  • O-rings help keep threads clean and smooth while providing better tactile feedback
  • Vented clevis design allows legs to collapse faster without pressure buildup
  • Threaded sockets on the sides of the apex provide better placement for accessories like QD attachments or a BC-18

Really (Right) Nice Tripod

We buy different gear for different reasons and this one was purchased for travel (air and backpack). I really wanted a different RRS model that was slightly lighter, but was discontinued. This one is a very close, but more expensive second option for my travel needs. I like astro and other multi or long exposure photography and wanted something light, strong and rigid. I am a bit parochial and like to buy both quality and if possible US made. I didn't get to use this on my most recent trip because of issues with RRS providing everyone involved with their intentions to discontinue. Have now had a chance to play with this at home though. It is stable, rigid and does not feel whippy. The legs extend and retract smoothly and much more easily than my larger Gitzo. It is more rigid than and has better weight capacity than the Sirui ST-124 I had to buy locally for my trip. The Sirui has slop in the legs while the RRS just moves easily. The twist locks of the RRS easily fit into the palm of my hand and all three turn easily, simultaneously for easy and quick extension. This model has no center column, so will get within a few inches of the ground. Which is good as I am shooting from that position more often. But, a center column is available if you want more versatility. I paired this with a Acratech GXPss ball head to keep the weight down and have matched weight capacities. Well, matched weight capacities with the discontinued model as the ball head arrived long before the tripod. As almost every other RRS reviewer states, if you can afford it, buy it. You wont be disappointed. Gitzo = go to at home and car travel astro tripod as it is very rigid, but heavy. Who cares you are at home or in the car Sirui = Emergency purchase. Not bad, but not in the same league as RRS, but much cheaper in price (and quality) RRS = This model is very close to what I wanted for travel where weight, strength and rigidity have to meet for a compromise and this tripod compromises very little.

After this  I sold my other tripods

Definitely an excellent long term purchase. Have had my RRS TVC-24 tripod for 2 years and it has been a reliable performer. Typically used with an Arca Swiss Z-1ballhead with RRS quick release plate on a RRS leveling base that also uses a quick release plate. This makes for swapping out heads a breeze. It is used with FX and DX bodies and a variety of lenses from 16-35, 120-300 to 200-500. All supported solidly in place. I find the twist leg locks easy to use and in good weather and bad it has not failed to deliver. After purchasing the TVC-24 tripod I sold or gave away both my Manfrotto MT055CXPRO3 carbon fiber tripods. They never got used after this RRS tripod became part of my kit.

For my $20000 Leica M10P and Noctilux f/0.95 50mm lens, I will trust nothing less than the RRS tripod and head.. why? Because I'm not going to cut corners on anything, especially if it's supporting one of the worlds most expensive consumer cameras and lens.

One piece of the legs just be pulled out from others when I was setting up the tripod after I bought it one month later. It is really not like the top quirlity tripod.

You can’t go wrong with this!!

I was hesitant about spending so much money on a set of tripod legs, but as soon as I took them out of the box I was impressed. Quality all around. Light weight, holds my Canon 5D MIV and EOS 100-400mm lens like it is a feather. As I get older, I need the assistance of a tripod to get the sharpest images. I also want to get back to the old days of  throwing my camera gear in the back of the car and explore and photograph the countryside, near and far. With this tripod, I can do just that. I am a true fan of Really Right Stuff. I am also glad that B&H now provides their gear.

Compromising shooting height vs. weight/size

After spending weeks trying to decide what tripod in the RRS lineup would serve me best, I chose the TVC-24MK2 for lenses from 24 to 500 on a Nikon D500 and D810. Build quality is superb, beyond anything I've seen in other brands (but to be honest, my other brands, and aluminum tripods at that, were not in this league). Although RRS techs suggested I go with the series 3 tripods, I stayed with the series 2 for light weight and short length, since I usually attach it to my LowePro Flipside 400AW backpack. I use it with a BH-55 ball head (when hiking) and a Whimberly II Gimbal head (when not). My only complaint, and I knew this going in, was that it is a little uncomfortable shooting standing up (I'm 5'-8), having to bend over if I'm shooting with a fully extended tripod. I still am happy with it because I need to keep the size and weight down to comfortably attach it to my backpack, and most times the height is not an issue (I like shooting low to the ground, and often use it from a camp chair and/or in a blind). Even fully extended the TVC24 is unbelievably rigid, and may I highly recommend that you go for the TVC over the TFC so that you have room for hands (bare or gloved) to grasp the tripod with legs folded! I'm always repositioning my fully loaded tripod, and always crushed my fingers with other brands that folded tight. I told myself this would be my very last tripod, but I'm already thinking of getting another RRS TVC, maybe a series 3, for no other reason than I'd like one that I can stand level with the camera using the Whimberly head when shooting not far from my truck.

I have a large Sony 200mm-600mm and this tripod will definitely be strong enough to hold the lens. This tripod weighs about 3 lbs 14 oz

I'm not really familiar with particularly the flex shooter pro ball head, but I dont see why it wouldn't fit on this tripod. I use this tripod for the rrs bh-55 ballhead (which is pretty big) so I dont see why it wouldn't fit with yours
