Canon M50 Overview

  • 1Description

This Canon EOS M50 with 15-45mm and 55-200mm Lenses and Memory Card Kit put together by B&H pairs the black version of the capable mirrorless camera with a 15-45mm lens, a 55-200mm lens, and an SD memory card so that you are ready to start shooting from the get-go.

  • Canon EOS M50 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 15-45mm and 55-200mm Lenses (Black)

Comprising a versatile feature-set to suit both stills and video applications, the black EOS M50 Mirrorless Digital Camera from Canon separates itself from the pack with UHD 4K video recording, a high-resolution electronic viewfinder, and improved Dual Pixel CMOS AF with Eye Detection AF. Utilizing a 24.1MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 8 image processor, improved Auto Lighting Optimizer helps to ensure clean image quality with low noise, along with top 10 fps shooting rate and a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600, which can be extended to ISO 51200 for working in low-light conditions. The sensor and processor combination also enables UHD 4K video recording at 23.98 fps, along with Full HD 1080p60 and HD 720p120 for slow motion capture. The sensor's design also facilitates Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which uses phase-detection autofocus for quick, accurate, and smooth performance to suit both stills and video use. Additionally, Combination IS 5-axis image stabilization also helps to realize steady, shake-free recording by minimizing the appearance of camera shake.

Complementing the imaging attributes, the EOS M50 also incorporates a 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3.0" touchscreen LCD for intuitive control. The screen's vari-angle design permits working from high and low working angles and its touchscreen interface allows working with Touch and Drag AF for easier manipulation of the AF area. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi with NFC is available for quick and convenient pairing with a smartphone or tablet for wireless image sharing, and Bluetooth is also featured for image sharing to and remote camera control from a mobile device.

24.1MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 8 Image Processor
Both a 24.1MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 8 image processor are used to deliver high sensitivity and fast camera performance to suit both stills and video applications. A flexible ISO 100-25600 range, with an expandable ISO 51200 setting, suits working in a variety of lighting conditions, and the processing capabilities minimize noise and afford Auto Lighting Optimizer for notable clarity in various shooting situations. UHD 4K video recording is also supported at 23.98 fps, along with Full HD 1080p60 and HD 720p120 settings for slow motion recording. Additionally, the processor affords a 10 fps continuous shooting rate, fast camera startup time, and short interval times between each frame for a more intuitive and efficient shooting process.
    Dual Pixel CMOS AF
Dual Pixel CMOS AF offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. This system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. Eye Detection AF can also be used for portraiture, and helps to prioritize focus on a subject's eye for ensured sharpness.

When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery.
    Combination IS
Combination IS uses the built-in 5-axis digital image stabilization in conjunction with lens-based image stabilization systems to effectively minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. This benefits recording while walking or moving, and can also be used in conjunction with lenses featuring optical IS for more effective overall stabilization.
    Body Design and Wireless Connectivity
    • Large 3.0" touchscreen LCD provides an intuitive method for controlling focusing points, navigating menus, and reviewing imagery. This screen also features a vari-angle to better enable working from high and low angles.
    • Integrated 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder permits bright, clear eye-level monitoring and also permits working with Touch and Drag AF for manually moving the AF area while shooting with the EVF for more intuitive control.
    • Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows for easy wireless sharing of both photos and movies to a linked mobile device.
    • Bluetooth permits linking a smartphone or tablet for quick, automatic image sharing between devices as well as remote control capabilities.
    • Built-in pop-up flash provides additional illumination for working in low-light conditions. A hot shoe is also available for working with an optional external flash for greater control.
    EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Lens
Included with the camera body is the versatile standard zoom EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens, which provides a 24-72mm equivalent focal length range. Three aspherical elements help to control chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range and an optimized lens placement works to reduce flare and ghosting. An Optical Image Stabilizer works to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 3.5 stops for sharper handheld shooting and an STM stepping motor provides fast, smooth, and near-silent autofocus performance.
    EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens
Also included in the kit is the telephoto zoom EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens, which provides an 88-320mm equivalent focal length range. One aspherical element and one Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) element help to reduce aberrations throughout the long zoom range and an Optical Image Stabilizer minimizes the appearance of camera shake by 3.5 stops to benefit working with slower shutter speeds. Additionally, an STM stepping motor delivers quick, quiet, and smooth autofocus to suit both stills shooting and video recording applications.

Canon M50 Reviews

EOS M50 with 15-45mm and 55-200mm Lenses and Memory Card Kit is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 105.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product, but be aware it is not eligible for CPS B and H is great and I am happy with the product. I was very surprised that this camera and the lenses are not eligible for the Canon Professional Services plan. I have several Canon items, and they are all covered by CPS. It should be, the price is up there, and they make a big point in their advertising with the adapter that the photographer can use their L lenses and professionals are using this camera. To be honest, I was waving between a Canon M camera and other options. I chose Canon due to brand loyalty and assumed that this equipment would be a part of CPS. If the CPS program is important to you when you buy equipment. This camera is not for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy, well worth the price I bought this camera primarily for a high quality Electronic View Finder, tilt/swivel LCD screen, advances in video, and compatibility/similar usage with the Canon T2i for I've had for 8 years, I know the old T2i well and have been happy with it, the M50 is a great upgrade, was everything I expected and more. It works very well with the lenses that came with it, my EF-S (Even the Tamron 18-270 super zoom) lenses and my adapted manual classic lenses from the 70's. I like the 24mp sensor and it's processed rendition better than the T2i's. The small size/light weight without compromise is awesome and the kit lenses are quiet and perfectly adequate for most usage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small and handy Being the owner of 2 big Nikon cameras, I wanted something small and light to take with me when I walk. I explored Nikon stuff and nothing fit the bill for me. At first, I was interested in the new Olympus M-10 but when Canon came out with the M50, I felt that the Canon was more of what I was looking for. It's lacking some features I'm used to but heck, For all the other goodies it does have, It suits my walking needs. One thing though; If you're used to the Nikon? system, it's kind of puzzling at first. It takes a learning curve. And by the way; Canon picture sharpness is awesome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Love It! This is a fabulous little camera. So lightweight, but with great grip. Ive used a DSLR before but Im a complete beginner to photography; my cameras before this have been the iPhone XS and a point-and-shoot Canon, so this is a fantastic step up while still being exceptionally user friendly. I wanted something that would help me understand photography basics while producing better quality images than my iPhone, and its done just that. Plus, its so pretty!! This came highly recommended to me from an actual photographer, and Im so so happy he sent me the info to buy this. I hope to update with more (better) pictures on this review once I get the hang of it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best bang for the buck Right off the bat: * If you're looking for a replacement for your FF DSLR, look elsewhere. * If you're looking to do extensive videography, especially 4K, look elsewhere. * If you need a rugged, weather sealed body, look elsewhere. However: If you want a lightweight, compact camera you can take where the DSLR would be to bulky, and yet still desire the image quality of a large sensor and flat out the best AF system at this price point, this is it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing little camera kit This is a great little camera.? A top feature is that?it has a screen and a viewfinder both with live view.? The live view has an exposure histogram and electronic level (it also has a grid view in playback mode).? The other cool feature is an option to see what's in focus.? I set mine to bright red - so when I press manual focus the lines in focus are bright red then I? can flip back to auto focus or take the shot in manual focus.? ?RAW is a big plus in my book.? Here are some shots using the 55-200 resized from RAW to 1200 x 800.? ?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small, Light Weight, Discrete APS-C camera w/ a Flip Screen A small, light weight, and discrete APS-C camera with a flip out screen, that takes EF/EF-S lenses with an adapter. The only thing I would want is a second control dial. Buy some extra batteries. Wifi works great (you can control the camera with your iPad, or iPhone). Great for movies in 1080p - AF works great with dual-pixel AF. 24 MP stills, great 1080p movies. It will do 4K movies, but there's an extra crop, and you lose the dual-pixel AF. (I avoid 4K because the file sizes for 4K are huge.) I use it with a EF-M 22mm f/2 and a 50mm f/1.8 (with an adapter).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Camera for Packing Anywhere This is a great camera for what it is, a light, small and easy to pack around. Both the JPEG and Camera RAW photos are of excellent quality The camera provides many special photo settings (for example fish-eye photos) that I have not neither used nor plan to do so as I use photo edit workflow apps on my workstation—like Adobe Lightroom and ON1 Photo Raw. 4K video is a bit cropped so it might be unusable for you video purists though 1080p is fine. See the DP Review ?website for the details EOS M50 review per less than desirable 4K video review and analysis. I do suggest that a good choice for you is to read the full Canon EOS M50 review on the DP Review website before purchasing this camera. Again I will say this is an excellent comera for the features is provides, but you need to fully understand what it does and does not provide feature wise before purchasing.

Is the EF-M 18-150 silver lens compatible w/ this camera body (ie, plug & shoot, no adapters needed)?
Asked by: Enrique S.
The Canon EOS M50 Mirrorless Digital Camera uses Canon's EF-M lens mount as shown under the Specifications for the camera. As the Canon EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Lens (Silver) also uses the Canon EF-M mount, no adapter is necessary to connect the lens to the camera; it connects directly to the EF-M lens mount on the camera.
