Extend your horizons with the Robus CC-001 Center Column for Vantage Series 3 and 5 Carbon Fiber Tripods, which is compatible with the RC-5558, RC-5570, RC-8860, and RC-8880 models. The center column replaces the top plate of the tripod and locks into the yoke securely. Releasing the locking collar permits the rapid center column to be adjusted within its 12.5" travel range. Even with the column fully extended, the 10x carbon fiber construction helps reduce vibrations that would otherwise cause camera shake.

At the top of the column is a reversible 1/4"-20 to 3/8"-16 stud and an integrated set screw that tightens against the bottom of a head to ensure that it not come off or loosen. At the bottom of the column is a counterweight hook to hang a small sand or camera bag for added weight and stability.

10x Carbon Fiber & Aluminum Construction
The CNC-machined locking plate secures into the tripod's yoke, and the 10x carbon fiber reduces vibrations that would otherwise cause camera shake.
Integrated Set Screw
The integrated set screw tightens against the bottom of the head to securely hold it from coming off the column.
Counterweight Hook
To add weight and further stabilize a tripod, a sand or camera bag can be hung from the counterweight hook, which is located on the bottom of the plate.

The fluted tube of the Robus CC-001 probably contributes to it's stability. The large locking collar with oversized grip 'wings' makes it easy to get the column firmly seated, and released when you need to adjust it. You can partially loosening the collar to get better control while adjust the height, maintaining a little bit of friction to help zero in on your desired height. That can be especially useful when doing macro work.

It works as it's designed to be, a center column. Easy to install. Easy to use. Very stable. I can't think of anything bad about it other than it costs a bit...

Pluses & minuses. Pluses: Strong, solid unit. It's heavy. Stays put & no movement, even with my D5 & 70-200 f2.8 on it. Extra feet (3 sets) is really nice, and the head swap option is nice. Minuses: Bought the center column (that's great), but with that & my RRS BH-55 on top, it wouldn't fit into the supplied bag (not so nice). Buying the 35 Ruggard Tripod Bag (BH #RUBD3035 MFR #BD-3035) solved that.

Solid build, very stable in use. Adds considerable flexibility to your tripod, especially when needing fast elevation adjustments while using a long lens. Highly recommended.

As others have said, the adjustments are not very smooth, but it works well inverted for macro work (which is why I bought it)

As other have mentioned, it's not the smoothest to adjust once you start adding weight to it. But with a bit of extra patience, you should be able to get the shot you're going for. In most cases while using a tripod, you probably won't need to frame your shot overly quickly, so take your time with it and with some practice, you'll learn its quirks.

What is the diameter of the plate? Appears it will fit a Benro tripod. 70mm (nominal)

I don't have an accurate way to measure the diameter of the plate directly, but if the drawing provided on the B&H Robus CC-001 web page is dimensionally accurate, and you scale up using the shaft dimension given in the details (32 cm), I calculate roughly 71.6 mm for the plate diameter. Regardless, I'd be surprised if the CC-001 properly fits any brand other than Robus.

Unfortunately no, center columns are brand and model specific. Currently Induro no longer makes a center column for the GIT504L.

What is the diameter of the plate on the column where the ball head is attached?

Well, I disagree with the two previous reviewers. I get 1.5 inches, or a tad more if you want to include the small knurled protrusions around the circumference. I suggest contacting Robus directly. I've found them to be very helpful with my questions. As an aside, I highly recommend the Robus RC-5570 Vantage Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod married to this CC-001 center column as a base for a pro DSLR and long lens used for bird photography. It is a terrific setup.

The center screw is removable, so you could substitute another of your choice. Alternatively, if it's too long for your purpose, a metal washer inserted as a spacer would solve the problem. It, along with the Vantage 5, has become my favorite tripod that I choose out of a closet of more than a dozen other top drawer tripods. Highly recommended.
