OWC / Other World Computing OWCTB3DK12PSG overview

  • 1Description

Connect a variety of Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C, USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A, mini DisplayPort 1.2, SDXC, Gigabit Ethernet, S/PDIF, and 3.5mm audio peripherals to your compatible Windows or Mac system using the space gray 12 Port Thunderbolt 3 Dock from OWC / Other World Computing. This dock contains two bi-directional 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports, which utilize the reversible USB Type-C interface. Thunderbolt 3 also supports 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2 and dual-bandwidth DisplayPort 1.2. While one of the Thunderbolt 3 ports is used to interface with your host system, the other can be used to daisy-chain up to six total devices.

Aside from its Thunderbolt 3 ports, the five USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports are compliant with the Battery Charging 1.2 spec, and the Gigabit Ethernet port will provide a wired network connection to systems that lack an Ethernet port, such as the MacBook Pro. Using one of the Thunderbolt 3 ports, this dock supports a single 5K display at 60 Hz, or dual 4K displays at 60 Hz when using both a Thunderbolt 3 port and the mini DisplayPort. The SD card reader supports the SD 3.0 spec, which provides compatibility with SDXC media and the UHS-I standard. Lastly, the 3.5mm headphone/mic jack and S/PDIF digital audio out jack allow items such as microphones, headphones, speakers, and other compatible accessories to be connected to your system.

OWC's 12 Port Thunderbolt 3 Dock is compatible with any Thunderbolt 3-equipped Mac running macOS 10.12 or later, as well as Windows systems running Windows 10 or later or Windows Server 2016 or later. It operates using an included universal auto-switching 100-240 VAC power supply, which can provide up to 60W of power to charge Thunderbolt 3 laptops and includes a 1.5'Thunderbolt 3 cable.

12 Port Thunderbolt 3 Dock (Space Gray) is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Constant problems, Windows needed for firmware updates! Besides constant problems when my MacBook would go to sleep, in some sort of cruel twist of irony, this Mac-centric company has a product that requires Microsoft Windows in order to apply firmware updates. And, oh, what an incredibly hostile piece of software that is! Last OWC product I buy. Company was totally oblivious to how bad an experience that was.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Monitor Issues I had the thunderbolt 2 dock before I upgraded to this new doc and they both had/have problems with the monitor once the computer goes to sleep. I hope an update comes (that doesn't need windows) soon. This is too expensive to have this kind of problem on a main feature of the doc.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The mini-display port doesn't work with my Asus display. I bought the product of work with a new 2018 iMac. Before it arrived I had to use up one of the two available Thunderbolt 3 ports to run my display. This product was purchased to 1) give me a separate display port thus freeing up the second Thunderbolt 3 port, and; 2) provide a collection of other useful data ports. In trying to get my Asus display to work with this product I've tried every operational setting possible in the display. None of them work; the Asus remains dark, and plugging the display connector in makes the iMac display go screwy. All of these settings work perfectly when the display is being driven by the Thunderbolt 3 port. The design of this product seems to be fundamentally flawed. OWC customer support started out helpful, encouraging me to try different settings on the display. When nothing worked, I asked them to point me to a display that would work with their product. I was willing to throw out the Asus and buy a new display to put my system on solid ground. I have never received a response to this request, and OWC customer support seems to have gone dark.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfectly with Mac & PC I switch between a Dell XPS 15 (Windows 10) and a late 2017 MacBook Pro. I have dual ASUS MX27UC monitors, and a Logitech unifying receiver for keyboard and mouse. After updating my drivers, making sure the Thunderbolt service was turned on (a Windows update turns it off- this is a known issue), and making sure the cables were actually Thunderbolt- everything worked seamlessly. I switch several times a day. I’m constantly compiling on both machines which can peg the CPU- and I have no problems staying charged all day. Peripherals connect instantly and work perfectly. I have CAT6 in the office and networking also auto-configured on both machines. All with a single cable- terrific solution. Would buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great I have two, one for my home office and one for my remote office. So easy, I just plug in my MBP and have all my devices are there. I keep an external drive connected and that way Time Machine makes a back up once I plug in. I have two monitors, Ethernet, and several USB devices plugged in. Never an issue. Product is solid. I added a TB3 to dual HDMI adapter to connect two 4K monitors. No issues. Looks great on the desk and well made.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good dock for Macbook Pro mid-2018 It's a fast dock (almost as fast as plugging directly to the computer) with plenty of ports, but a Thunderbolt to firewire port would have been a good idea. Unfortunately, it arrived in old box that was half open on top. The protective plastic sheet over the plexiglass dock top was missing so it had a lot of scratches. I sent it back to B&H and they replaced it with another that was perfect.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Major Issues! Do not waste your money. I had high hopes for this OWC Thunderbolt 3 12-port dock for my 2017 MacBook Pro. It looked to have more connectivity than any other dock, but dont be fooled...there are serious issues that make this dock useless. Firstly, the mini-display port doesnt work. My monitor doesnt get detected when using mini-display, but it does get detected with Thunderbolt. Problem is that there are only 2 Thunderbolt ports, and you need one to connect to the laptop. Secondly, when I connect my Thunderbolt Focusrite Clarett audio interface to the Thunderbolt port, there is a faint, but very audible high pitched crackly hissing sound. I noticed it immediately when plugging in. When I plug it into the laptop port directly the sound goes away. Thirdly, the Thunderbolt 3 cable that comes with the unit is so short, that your placement options are limited. Youre likely going to need to buy a longer Thunderbolt 3 cable, which isnt cheap. I tried updating the drivers and software and upgraded to Mojave, but it doesnt fix the issue. The product simply doesnt work as youd expect.
