Does this support x16 cards? Asking as in the key features it states "Supports PCIe x16, x8, and x4 Cards" but then it also states "1 x PCIe 3.0 x4" Slot so I am unsure and the pictures also only show a x4 slot.
Asked by: Joshua
The RocketStor 6661A will fit a card with a PCIe connector longer than 4 lanes. However, there will be additional limits imposed by the specifications of PCI Express power delivery. While a full 16 lane slot is specified to provide up to 75W from the PCIe connector, I believe that PCIe 3.0 specifies up to 25W for a four lane slot. It is possible that the slot could provide more current but that would be outside of the specification. I have encountered a few storage controllers and network adapters with an x8 connector and are specified to consume under 25W but I haven't seen a x16 length card that has required less than 25W from the PCIe bus. Additionally, I see a B&H staff member's response to this question and without addressing whether or not there are in fact PCIe x4 slots "that operate at x16 speeds", the Thunderbolt 3 connection is 4 PCIe 3.0 lanes; you won't get more than 4 lanes of bandwidth over a single Thunderbolt connection.

Will this work with Mellanox Connect-X6 / Connect-X5 cars on Windows?
Asked by: Philipp
The RocketStor 6661A is also compatible with Windows 8 and up. However, the computer will require Thunderbolt capability and have the appropriate drivers installed. Separately, I have not confirmed Mellanox ConnectX-6 or -5 compatibility. I see another question regarding support for x16 (and x8 lane) cards and I am not satisfied by the answer that was posted.
