Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM Overview

Mixing a relatively compact, lightweight form factor with updated stabilization and performance, the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM from Canon is an impressively versatile telephoto zoom. Well-suited for a range of subjects, from events to portraiture to sports, this zoom is characterized by its constant f/4 maximum aperture to strike a balance between consistent performance and portability. Its optical design includes a pair of UD elements and one fluorite element to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing. This optimized design, along with a Super Spectra coating, also helps to control flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy when working in harsh lighting and backlit conditions.

Version II of this popular lens also sees the inclusion of a revised Optical Image Stabilizer, which now compensates for five stops of camera shake and offers three distinct stabilization modes to suit different shooting applications. A ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism also afford quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed for use in trying environmental conditions.

Versatile telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs however, it can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 112-320mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the relatively lightweight design and compact form factor.
One fluorite element and two ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to five shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Additionally, three dedicated image stabilization modes are available (Standard, During Exposure Only, and Panning) and can be selectively employed to suit a variety of types of shooting.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to two different ranges to suit different applications: 3.3'-infinity or 9.8'-infinity.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Optional AII(WII) Tripod Mount Ring is available and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM Reviews

MUST-HAVE ZOOM LENS

The 70-200mm is another 'must-have' lens for the tool kit. I use this on one of our Canon C200, shooting 12bit 4K RAW. Looks fantastic, like the 24-105mm, and 17-55mm. Its great for automotive stuff on the track, and some creamy beauty shots.

Debated for a long time about which 70-200 to get- wish I would have purchased this one long ago. Sharp, fast focusing, unbelievably light so great walk around/hand held lens. Using on 6D mii and 90D- works great on both. Can still get decent bokeh with f4- having another stop and the added weight (f2.8 version) for ~ $800 more wasn't needed for my purposes. Highly recommend!

I reviewed and hemmed and hawed but finally decided to just get this while they are still available and I'm so glad I did! I've had fun taking photos of a rising full moon and photos of the birds at our feeder. I've been commissioned to take photos by our granddaughter riding her horse and this will be the perfect lens for the task. So glad I got it!

The lense or parts inside is moving

This is my second try. I got the first one and when I opened it, the parts inside were moving like it was broken. When picking it up or even shaking it lightly you can hear parts inside dancing around. I returned it and a new one was shipped to me. The first day was ok but by day 2 it started doing the exactly same thing the first was doing. It's annoying to spend $1600 on a lense and it shakes like it is broken.

Fast and quiet, very sharp focus. Feels lighter than I thought it would. This is a good thing because most of my work is with the camera hand held.

Great Lightweight Lens

I've owned this lens for awhile and opted for the F/4 version based on cost difference and weight. F/4 meets my needs and well worth the savings. Highly recommend it unless you need to use in very low light situations. Currently using it with a 6D Mark II

This lens has three IS modes. Which is best for hand-held video use?
Asked by: Steven
Well, Mode 1 corrects vibrations in all directions and it's mainly used for Stills. Mode 2 might be best since it's mainly stabilizing vertical or horizontal motions. Mode 3 is similar but only when you're taking the shot so I would stick with a mixture of Mode 1 & 2 for your video work.

This lens is not push pull, it has 2 rings, 1 for focus and 1 for zoom. This design is best, especially for weather sealing.

Does this lens work well with the Blackmagic Pocket cameras? I'm looking for a lighter telephoto lens to use and am debating between this and the Sigma 50-100mm. Thoughts?
Asked by: Dietrich
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM Lens is compatible with the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro (Canon EF) The Sigma 50-100 has a wider 1.8 aperture so it is better in low light but the zoom is not as long.
