Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM Overview

Mixing a relatively compact, lightweight form factor with updated stabilization and performance, the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM from Canon is an impressively versatile telephoto zoom. Well-suited for a range of subjects, from events to portraiture to sports, this zoom is characterized by its constant f/4 maximum aperture to strike a balance between consistent performance and portability. Its optical design includes a pair of UD elements and one fluorite element to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing. This optimized design, along with a Super Spectra coating, also helps to control flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy when working in harsh lighting and backlit conditions.

Version II of this popular lens also sees the inclusion of a revised Optical Image Stabilizer, which now compensates for five stops of camera shake and offers three distinct stabilization modes to suit different shooting applications. A ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism also afford quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed for use in trying environmental conditions.

Versatile telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs however, it can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 112-320mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the relatively lightweight design and compact form factor.
One fluorite element and two ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to five shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Additionally, three dedicated image stabilization modes are available (Standard, During Exposure Only, and Panning) and can be selectively employed to suit a variety of types of shooting.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to two different ranges to suit different applications: 3.3'-infinity or 9.8'-infinity.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Optional AII(WII) Tripod Mount Ring is available and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM Reviews

Fast and quiet, very sharp focus. Feels lighter than I thought it would. This is a good thing because most of my work is with the camera hand held.

Significant upgrade over earlier version

Using a 5D Mk IV I've tested the new lens indoors on a tripod with a resolution chart, and outdoors by shooting handheld in the field. In comparison to my decade-old EF 70-200mm f/4L, sharpness at the center of the image is similar at most apertures but the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II is much sharper near the edges. Excellent contrast. Tack-sharp when wide open. The image stabilizer is effective. The main downside is the 72mm filter diameter which has forced me to buy new filters and stack caps.

Great lightweight alternative to the 70-200 f/2.8 lens

Great lightweight alternative to the 70-200 f/2.8 lens which is considerably heaver but with a better bokeh. I purchased to reduce weight and hope the sharpness is good. So far, we believe that the 24-105 /f/4 Canon is slightly sharper.

Who needs 2.8?

This thing is sharp as a tack, and light as feather (comparably). The smaller price tag is what sold me on this lens. I've used 70-200 f/2.8's that weren't my own for about 6 years and f/4 really hasn't been a constraint for me yet. You still get the wonderful bokeh and compression you've been looking for. Only downside I've thought about so far is if you want to use an extender you'll be getting stopped down closer to f/8 rather than f/4.

Having the second focus takes a little getting used to. The front one seems touchy so it would move when I was taking pictures. Spent the weekend shooting wildlife and think I have the hang of it now.

I traded in my 70-200 LIS (version one) lens to get this lens. Initially I was worried about giving up the 2.8 and the five central double cross focus points on my 5D MKIV. No worries. This thing is sharp and focuses fast even in low light. I just got it a couple hours ago but it is going to be a fine replacement. Its virtually silent for focus and IS which helps if shooting video. I also got the latest Canon 1.4 Extender Mark III to go with the new lens. Works fine with the 70-200. I didn't notice any focus issues at all. I am really going to love the lighter weight versus the 2.8. I should have done this sooner. Thanks B&H for the fast service.

This lens has three IS modes. Which is best for hand-held video use?
Asked by: Steven
Well, Mode 1 corrects vibrations in all directions and it's mainly used for Stills. Mode 2 might be best since it's mainly stabilizing vertical or horizontal motions. Mode 3 is similar but only when you're taking the shot so I would stick with a mixture of Mode 1 & 2 for your video work.

This lens is not push pull, it has 2 rings, 1 for focus and 1 for zoom. This design is best, especially for weather sealing.
