Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

One of the most versatile lenses available, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM from Canon is an L-series telephoto zoom distinguished by its bright design and advanced optics. Ideal for a variety of subjects ranging from portraiture to sports, the fast constant f/2.8 maximum aperture excels in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects. The optical layout makes use of one fluorite element and five UD elements to suppress chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to realize a high degree of clarity throughout the zoom range. An Air Sphere Coating is also featured, and works to reduce flare and ghosting for greater color fidelity and contrast in all conditions.

Complementing the speed and optics is an Optical Image Stabilizer, which compensates for 3.5 stops of camera shake to better enable working handheld and in low-light situations. A ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism also afford quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed for use in trying environmental conditions.

Versatile telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 112-320mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and offers notable control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
One fluorite element and five ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 3.5 shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. In addition to the single-shot standard IS mode, a second mode is also available that it optimized for panning.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to two different ranges to suit different applications: 3.9'-infinity or 8.2'-infinity.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
A weather-resistant design protects the lens from dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions. Additionally, fluorine coatings have also been applied to the front and rear lens elements for further protection against fingerprints and smudging.
Removable rotating tripod collar is included and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Wonderful lens. Not much more to say about it except that it's perfect in every way. The beautiful bokeh is probably my favorite part about shooting with it.

The lens works great for me shooting indoor high school volleyball. I can get the Lens speed to 300+ with ISO setting of 800. I am very pleased with the quality of the pictures with no blurring in movement

It's heavy, it's bulky, it doesn't pack well and it's expensive. After using it one time, none of this matters. This is an awesome lens, perfect for outside portraits. Gathers a lot of light wide-open, autofocus is fast and sharp. I can't speak to the image stabilization since I only used it with a fairly fast shutter. Another worthwhile investment.

Perfect!

Used this lens with my 5D Mark IV for photographing my Jack Russell Tuck while playing at a local park. If you know Jack Russell's you know they move all the time and they move fast. With this lens and camera set at Al Servo, I was able to get a lot of images nice and crisp. If I was as fast as Tuck and the lens, they all would have been crisp.

Perfect

Love it! Previously I ordered the first model from another company and was disappointed. I quickly returned it and placed an order with B&H. I will never again go with another company!

Will this work with the T5i for outdoor soccer at night (poor lighting)?
Asked by: Kerry
I have found the lens to work extremely well in poor lighting. The lens itself is designed for that BUT to get the most out of the lens you have to study and understand the best settings (ie the ISO triangle rule). The better you understand the settings the better control you will have over the light and freezing the action shots Ohhhhhh but i don’t know if this lens works with the T5i. I use it with the 6D mark II

I have a few questions: What are the degrees of rotation in the focus and zoom rings? I know this is not a cinema lens per se, and yet the 2.8 aperture makes it attractive as a budget cinema zoom: Does anyone have remarks on how close to, if at all, this lens comes to being parfocal? Thank you!
Asked by: Brian
Finally a great question!!! I am currently using this lens for cinema. At first I was asking the same questions too! The zoom and focal rings work better than expected. With 38.764 degrees of movement it performs very close to cinematic lenses. They come ever so close to parfocal that only a few will see the difference.

The condition of this lens is a 10 so is there anything more you can tell me about it being pre owned.
Asked by: Carie
Someone else used it previously. It was new then someone purchased it, apparently used it super lightly and kept good care of it and now it's for sale again. Probably not a bad buy unless your thinking about going mirrorless. I love mine. Great lens. Very sharp and super quick A/F.

Yes. It is an EF lens so it will fit both EF-S and EF Mount. Remember you still have your crop ratio but it will work just fine.

Asked by: PAUL
Yes, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM Lens can be used on the Canon Rebel T6. Keep in mind that the Canon T6 is an APS-C sensor camera with a crop factor of 1.6x, making this lens equivalent to a 112-320mm lens.
