    NEC PA271Q-BK-SV reviews

PA271Q-BK-SV 27" 16:9 Color-Critical IPS Monitor with SpectraView II Color Calibration is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Some (Hopefully) Helpful Tips I can now say the PA271Q is a truly outstanding monitor (at least so far – I’ve only had it a 24 hours), but that is only after A LOT of trial and error. Hopefully I can make things smoother for buyers who read this review. I am not a monitor expert so my reasoning may be faulty, but what works works even if it is for the wrong reason so read on. Possible Lesson #1. After connecting the monitor and firing up my system my first order of business was to configure my two monitors with the 271Q being the primary and my old LCD2690WUXi2 as the extension (replacing an older monitor that had been the extension). It was no problem in windows. But when I tried to make the 271Q Monitor 1 in SpectraView II it just would not stick. I thought I had it licked last night after I turned off my system and disconnected the 2690 leaving the 271Q as the only monitor. Later, after all calibration, when I put the 2690 back on the 271Q stayed as monitor 1 for the rest of the night, even through power downs and back up. But this morning it was back to the old 2690 being monitor 1 and the new 271Q being monitor 2. I don’t think it makes any difference so the possible lesson is just do auto-configure, test the LUTs and monitors in the software and as long as the correct monitor is being adjusted just let SpectraView II win this battle. Possible lesson #2. Let the PA271Q run continuously for an hour before running SpectraView II. When I turned off the system as noted above I went straight to running SpectraView II. It warns you that the monitor hasn’t been running continuously for 30 minutes and gives you the option to wait. I didn’t, figuring it was only off for a minute or so. Well, as I later learned it is not the temperature that is the thing. The built in Spectraview engine (as noted in the manual) is fiddling with the settings for a while. My first try, with the monitor only having been on for five minutes or so produced color tracking that was pretty good above about 50 cd/m but a disaster below that. Long story short I ran Spectraview II again and again and the tracking got better and better until the monitor had been on for about an hour continuously. After that there was no improvement. Possible Lesson #3. Even after an hour of running, the best color tracking I could get was darn good above about 50 cd/m but my old 2690 blew it out of the water below that. But all those times running SpectraView II I had noticed that it didn’t spend any time “measuring native response” like it does with my 2690. So against what is it computing its adjustment values? Then I remembered the section in the manual about “Stand Alone Calibration.” Apparently there is some internal “color processor reference data” against which all picture mode adjustments are made. That data is updated by the stand alone calibration. I suspect SpectraView II doesn’t know or care what the monitor’s native response is. It just assumes the internal reference data is correct about the native response. So I did a stand alone calibration. Then I ran SpectraView II and all my problems were gone. It now exceeds my expectations. So the possible lesson is before each SpectraView II calibration run a stand alone calibration. Compared to my old 2690 (which still tests as well as it did new, but has developed some dark spots in a corner) the 271Q has much better white point delta E, very much better contrast, and color tracking that is better but not hugely so when the old 2690 is put through SpectraView II with the new MDSVSENSOR3 sensor. The new sensor made a surprising improvement to my 2690s color tracking as compared to using the older MDSVSENSOR. I did not expect that. I can find no fault with the uniformity of the 271Qs screen. I will note that while I manually set the “Uniformity” setting to “off” to examine the screen, SpectraView II resets it to 5. But contrast is still over 1,000:1 even with that 5 setting.
