Nissin MG10 Reviews

[This is my third review on the same flash.

This is the third review of this flash. In the end I returned it. I really wanted to like the flash, and love the remote trigger. But after taking it on a couple different jobs, I found it to be unreliable. Yesterdays shoot was done without the trigger because, even after resetting and reconnecting many times, the trigger would not work. The flash would work, but not the trigger. At $600, I expected hardware that outperformed less expensive flashes.

The flash is very good, though as not as my old Metz mercablitz. I only used it once at a anniversary party. It did the job lighting up high shadow areas from overhead flouresant lights.

I tried so many brand for the Sony system and none of them came close Nissin brand. Example. The transceiver work very well for outdoor. The TTL power is working very accurate. I am very happy with the results.

Works better with Nikon than m43.

I have the MG10 and an Air10s for both Nikon and Olympus (m43). Nissin updated the firmware for the Nikon Air10s recently (2022) for the Z9 and it does seem to work better with the Nikon brand than Olympus. With the m43 Air10s, exposures are all over the place in TTL mode and a bit better in Manual triggering. Had service look at it, but no improvement. Channel selection is limited to Channels 2-8 so could be RFI, but wouldn't explain why it works better in Nikon Air10s. I find that you need to practice with the diffuser, and maybe add some diffuser material, to keep a dual-pattern of the two bulbs from showing up in the distance. Putting it into manual lens focal setting at the nearest setting (24mm lens) also helps blend the two bulbs better. Given it shoots a higher Kelvin as most speedlight types of small flashtubes, even with two tubes, I find it helps to add a 1/8 CTO filter (Lee #223 or Rosco #3410) to it as well to warm it up a bit to a better daylight balance. Shot-to-shot EV consistency is about 1/3 stop with Nikon. With Olympus, it could be 2-3 stops which is too inconsistent and needs Nissin's attention and why I only give it three stars. The remote cable supplied for m43 fits Panasonic but not Olympus. You may need a 3 conductor 2.5mm cable as this one for remote triggering: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1606118-REG/vello_rcc2_c1_25_2_5mm_shutter_cable_for.html Does last a lot longer with the two optional Lithium cells as well over the 8 AA cells.

question

I own a Nissin Di700a flash which makes wireless contact with the Nissin Air 1 Commander. If I bought the Nissin MG10 with the Air 10s Commander, would my Nissin Di700a be serviceable as a wireless slave controlled by the MG 10?
Asked by: Fredrick
Yes, the MG10 and Air 10s Commander are compatible with the DI700A. The Air 10s will control both the 700A and the MG10. The Air 10s has some additional features from the AIr 1 Commander; some of which will also on the 700A, but not all features of the Air 10s will work on the 700A. To find out more, you can download the Nissin Air 10s Instruction manual for the NissinDigital.com website. https://www.nissindigital.com/air-10s Let us know if you have any other questions

Hi, can I use Nissin Air 1 commander to trigger MG 10?
Asked by: Cheng
The Nissin Air 1 Commander can be paired with the MG10 to control the flash's basic group functions, including Auto/TTL/Manual Mode, 1/2 step EV exposure control, 3 groups, flash zoom, and high-speed sync. The MG10's advanced group functions can only be used with the newer Nissin Air 10s Commander, Nissin's successor to the older Air 1. Improvements in the Air 10s include a range to 300', 1/3 step EV exposure control, 8 groups, and mixing of Manual and TTL flash modes between the Basic Groups and Advanced Groups. Panasonic Micro 4/3 and full frame cameras share the same hotshoe, therefore you can use the same on camera flash or trigger system for both series. Nissin MG10 Wireless Flash with Air 10s Commander (Micro Four Thirds) is compatible with Panasonic S5 mirrorless cameras.
