Key Features
  • 16x Filter Factor, +4 Stops
  • Darkens Entire Image
  • Reduce Shutter Speeds, Widen Apertures
  • Greater Control over Exposure Settings
The 82mm ND16 QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 1.2 and Circular Polarizer Filter from PolarPro is a filter that combines a solid neutral density effect with a circular polarizer effect. When in use, this filter's 16x filter factor provides a 4-stop exposure reduction. Its 1.2 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

PolarPro QuartzLine Overview

The 82mm ND16 QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 1.2 and Circular Polarizer Filter from PolarPro is a filter that combines a solid neutral density effect with a circular polarizer effect. When in use, this filter's 16x filter factor provides a 4-stop exposure reduction. Its 1.2 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Simultaneously, this filter can help to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges and filters this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is constructed from quartz glass for enhanced durability. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, 16 layers of anti-reflection coatings offer scratch protection to the filter substrate while promoting clarity and color fidelity. The coatings associated with the PolarPro 82mm ND16 QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 1.2 and Circular Polarizer Filter also result in an improved beading effect when in contact with water or oil, allowing for more efficient cleaning.

The quartz glass is set within a brass filter ring with side knurlings that can be rotated in order to adjust the intensity of the polarization effect. Together, the brass material and knurlings prevent jamming and provide additional strength, as well as a textured grip when mounting or removing this filter from a lens.

PolarPro QuartzLine Reviews

Dirty and Used scuff

Glass had dust on it and all over the inside of the case. These was also what appeared to be oil residue on the case right beneath the filter. Further inspection showed scuffs on threading. Clearly not new it had prior usage. I bought this thinking it was new highly disappointed.

Great build and sharp glass!

This filter is sharp and provides excellent color with the added bonus of a polarizer built in! The 4 stop ND filter is perfect for streams, rivers, and waterfalls when you’re trying to keep some texture to the water. I flip the camera into live view after I focus to see the polarizer to get the right color of greens and blues in the overall image. What really sold this filter for me was the brass ring and how it was advertised not to get stuck on the lens or other filters. I have used Tiffen filters while achieving my BFA in Photography and B+W filters for the last 12 years I shot as a pro. These filter brands have gotten stuck on lenses and other filters with several being cut off in order to get the shot in time for my clients. B+W even states they have a brass ring, but they still get stuck! I tried the PolarPro 4stop / polarizer and had no issue taking the filter off when shooting in deserts, artic regions, and high humidity areas. I have since then purchased the 6 stop / polarizer, 10 stop / with polarizer, and 15 stop ND filters from PolarPro. I have still not had one of these filters get stuck on a lens or filter and have been using them for over a year. I have field tested PolarPro against my B+W filters and I see no color difference between the two companies. This is probably due to the 97.9% Quartzline glass that PolarPro gets from Germany, which is something the two companies have in common. PolarPro is based in California but the resin used to coat the layers of glass is from China. This is common with filters in order to keep cost down since most consumers don’t want to spend $300 - $500 or more on a single filter.

Very stiff and Made in China

Love the design, but does not work with the Sony FX9's varible ND filters. Too much resistance on the rotation. I am not liking things made in China.

Worth the money, just make sure you need something like this

Amazing build quality, great color accuracy, tac sharp. With that said don't feel pressured into buying the thing everyone says is worth it. There are great ND filters out there worth your attention and money in all sorts of price ranges. If this is in your budget and you want the best in this range, you wont regret this purchase. Everything from the packaging to the product its self is masterfully designed and precision engineered. To top it off, It looks classy AF on my camera. My complaints are: - Existing lens cap wont work - Lens hood wont clear the slight change in diameter.

Would this filter give me rich and colorful results when doing street photography, and if so, how many stops should I go for so that I dont have to change the filter too often even if it gets dark, 3, 4 stops?... or should I go for a polarizer one? Thanks
Asked by: Fel
Yes, it will clean up your images by saturating colors and increasing contrast. I would just go with a polarizer that would cut out about 1-2 stops.
