PolarPro 82mm ND64 QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 1.8 and Circular Polarizer Filter (6-Stop)
Key Features
  • 64x Filter Factor, +6 Stops
  • Darkens Entire Image
  • Reduce Shutter Speeds, Widen Apertures
  • Greater Control over Exposure Settings
The 82mm ND64 QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 1.8 and Circular Polarizer Filter from PolarPro is a filter that combines a solid neutral density effect with a circular polarizer effect. When in use, this filter's 64x filter factor provides a 6-stop exposure reduction. Its 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

PolarPro QuartzLine Overview

The 82mm ND64 QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 1.8 and Circular Polarizer Filter from PolarPro is a filter that combines a solid neutral density effect with a circular polarizer effect. When in use, this filter's 64x filter factor provides a 6-stop exposure reduction. Its 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Simultaneously, this filter can help to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges and filters this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is constructed from quartz glass for enhanced durability. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, 16 layers of anti-reflection coatings offer scratch protection to the filter substrate while promoting clarity and color fidelity. The coatings associated with the PolarPro 82mm ND64 QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 1.8 and Circular Polarizer Filter also result in an improved beading effect when in contact with water or oil, allowing for more efficient cleaning.

The quartz glass is set within a brass filter ring with side knurlings that can be rotated in order to adjust the intensity of the polarization effect. Together, the brass material and knurlings prevent jamming and provide additional strength, as well as a textured grip when mounting or removing this filter from a lens.

Solid ND Filter

A solid ND filter to cut down on harsh light and give you videos a more cinematic look. If I have a shoot mid day and that's the only time slot the customer is available I keep one of these handy because they cut down on the harsh light or light leaks and soften the skin tones for photo shoots. The filter comes with a nice carrying case that has soft foam inside with precise cutout for the glass so it doesn't move around and get all scratched up. The filter size is 82, I use it on my Sony FE 24mm-70mm f2.8 G master lens. It screw on in the front of the lens easy and it comes off easy as well.

Convenient and Well Made

Fancy packaging aside, these seem like they are well made and high quality at a competitive price with other well respected brands. I appreciate the convenient CPL/ND combo because they often have to be stacked. Also like PolarPro's prominent knurling which helps threading filters on and off, but these two in one filters have smaller inner rings that you have to turn which kind of defeat that advantage. Don't notice any color cast, which has been an issue with other brands.

I've been using variable ND filters for a while and could never really get out of them what they promised. Even the higher-end filters seemed to underperform. Not so this Polar Pro ND64. Now I'm going to have to get the ND32 and ND16. And yes, it's a bit of a pain to lug multiple filters around and put them on the camera in the middle of a run-and-gun sort of shoot, but it's comforting to know I'm getting what I need now.

Polar pro has earned a spot in my bag. No real color cast, and I dropped it in a stream in a rock. Not a scratch or dent on it. It still works great even with my terrible fingers.

What is the filter thickness? Not stated in the specs. Thx
Asked by: Zon Hisham
Screw-on filters like the Polar Pro ND64 QuartzLine do not traditionally specify filter thickness. We measured ours at the store and without the filter threads, the filter measures 6.21mm thick.

Does the combo ND/PL also help w/ saturation/contrast as well or just glare reduction?
Asked by: Jonathan
When using the variable circular polarizing section of the PolarPro 82mm ND64 QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 1.8 and Circular Polarizer Filter, one can increase saturation and contrast in a photo, as well as glare reduction.
