An ideal set for wildlife photographers, the Canon 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x Lens Wildlife Kit by B&H packages a telephoto zoom lens with a sturdy tripod and gimbal head for stability. • Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x Lens

A long-reaching zoom characterized by its versatility, the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x from Canon is a medium to super-telephoto distinguished by its unique optical design and fast performance. Featuring a built-in 1.4x extender, you can quickly and intuitively switch between the native 200-400mm f/4 setting and an effective 280-560mm f/5.6 for greater reach. Benefitting this unique design is a sophisticated optical layout, which includes one fluorite element and four ultra-low dispersion elements to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to individual elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for greater color accuracy and contrast when working in bright or backlit conditions.

Beyond the optical attributes, this 200-400mm f/4 is also characterized by its advanced four stop-effective Image Stabilizer system, which has three separate stabilization modes to suit various shooting applications. Also complementing handling is a sophisticated ring-type USM, which provides quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed for use in trying environmental conditions and it has a removable rotating tripod collar to benefit working atop a tripod or monopod.

Super telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 320-640mm equivalent focal length.
Built-in 1.4x extender allows you to instantly extend your reach to 280-560mm (or 448-896mm equivalent with APS-C cameras) simply by flipping the left-hand switch. Since the extender is integrated within the lens housing, it is optically matched to the lens for improved imaging performance and also fully maintains the lens's weather sealing.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture, without the teleconverter in position, offers consistent illumination throughout the zoom range. When the 1.4x teleconverter is engaged, the maximum aperture is effectively f/5.6.
One fluorite element and four ultra-low dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Three distinct IS modes are available: standard single-shot mode, a panning-optimized mode, and a mode that only activates the Image Stabilizer during the exposure.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Focus Preset function is available to quickly recall a programmed focusing position.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to different ranges for faster performance to suit different applications.
A Power Focus setting is available, and allows you to electronically and smoothly adjust your focus position to suit video recording. This setting utilizes a dedicated ring in front of the main focusing ring and allows you to use one of two different focusing speeds.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Fluorine-coating on exposed elements affords protection to the optical system, resists smudging and fingerprints, and is easier to clean.
Removable rotating tripod collar is included and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

  • Gitzo GT3543LS Systematic Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long)

The GT3543LS Systematic Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod from Gitzo is a high capacity carbon fiber tripod that represents the ultimate goals of the Systematic lineup—minimal weight, durability, and uncompromising stability. The Series 3 tripods are optimal for traveling light but with extremely sturdy support, especially for those who prefer to work without a center column or need enhanced modularity.

Within the Series 3 line the GT3543LS is given the "Long" designation as it can extend from a minimum height of 3.5", to a maximum height of 57.5", all while maintaining an impressive weight capacity of 55 lb. Incorporating Gitzo's patented carbon eXact tubing, the GT3543LS sports maximum rigidity while keeping its weight to an absolute minimum. Weighing just 4.5 lb allows the tripod it be easily carried or transported in the studio or out in the field. It's folded length of just 22.4" makes storing or travelling with the tripod easy and convenient.

The Systematic line also features an array of unique, patented, and useful features which set a standard for professional quality. The key design element of the series is the use of Gitzo's Carbon eXact tubes which are extremely rigid despite their lightweight design. The carbon tubing is complimented by Gitzo's G-Lock Ultra twist-locks which maintain stable, solid connections between leg sections and prevent joint damage by blocking out dirt, dust, and moisture. Each leg on the tripod features a 50mm rubber articulating foot, providing a stable and versatile base for setting the tripod on most surfaces. If required, the feet may be removed and replaced with optional metal spikes for increased stability in sand, dirt, mud, snow, and ice. The base of the tripod also features a 3/8"-16 Easy Link attachment thread, allowing the user to connect a variety of accessories to the tripod including magic arms, shoe adapters, LED lights, monitors, and more.

  • Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base

The Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base is a gimbal-type tripod head that incorporates an elevated tilt mechanism and adjustable platform to make the camera/lens' center of gravity and tilt axis of the head be perfectly aligned.

Things once thought of as impossible with a ball head are nothing short of mundane with a Wimberley, because a weightless camera/lens combo (even a 600mm f/4 w/ large body) can literally be controlled with one finger. Point the rig where you want and take the hand away, and it stays exactly where you put it.

The Version II head is more compact and lightweight, features a redesigned panning base, "soft-touch" knobs, and includes a built-in Arca-type compatible quick release base. An Arca-type quick release plate is required and is available separately.

The built-in industry-standard Arca-type quick release clamp makes it compatible with the many different plates available from Arca-Swiss, Acratech , Kirk, Wimberly, Really Right Stuff, Foba, etc.
The head does not have separate controls for tension and locking, but the locking controls deliver smooth resistance with diminished "stick-slip".
The overall height of the head is 9.25" (23.5cm), with the lens platform adjustable from 3.5 to 7.1" (8.9 x 18cm). The centerline of a balanced lens will be approximately 8.4" (21.3cm) above the bottom of the head.
Distance from the mounting surface of the platform to the tilt axis: Adjustable from 1.1 to 4.8" (2.8 to 12.2cm).
The head's redesigned panning base has zero play and the pan locking knob has been moved to the side of the head; this allows the user to easily operate both knobs with the same hand.
Lobed "soft-touch" knobs provide a more comfortable grip and perform better when using gloves.
    Powder coated/anodized finish.

  • Visual Echoes FX3 Better Beamer Flash Extender for Use with Telephoto Lenses

The Visual Echoes FX3 Better Beamer Flash Extender will help increase the reach of Canon 580EX, 580 EX II, 600EX-RT, Nikon SB-700 and Metz 54MZ-4 flash units, and increases the flash output by about 2 to 3 f/stops. It focuses and concentrates the output of the flash into a narrow beam via the Fresnel panel that gets positioned in front of the flash. This allows shooting at greater distances and shooting with smaller apertures.

The Better Beamer is designed to be used with lenses 300mm and longer, and its rugged, injection-molded plastic side supports are attached to the flash head by a sturdy elastic "hook-and-loop" band. The rigid supports hold the Fresnel screen in place in both horizontal and vertical formats.

Excellent for wildlife and birding photography, where long-distance fill-flash is often required, especially with a bright sunlight background. The use of fill flash opens up the shadows without the appearance that a flash was used.
When used with TTL flash metering, exposure is automatically set by the camera and flash, and no special compensation is required.
Reduces the drain on battery power by two-thirds.

Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x Reviews

EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Used almost every week. My photography has changes since I bought this lens. I now shoot more sports and wildlife. The lens is very good for everything that has action. For football I can go sit in the end zone and cover the entire field from the far end zone to 10 yards out. Motorsports, my keeper rate went up 2X by being able to zoom. I now pick up some money shooting wildlife in the winter. I do not use a lot of zooming for raptors butI do for Florida wetlands. With my 7Dii in the sun or 1DX in dim light I have it all covered. Occasionally I will use with a Canon X1.4 MKiii. Canon used one of my eagle pics online that I took with the external X1.4 extender in line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Class in every way I use this lens for all sports, and it is ideal. the zoom gives it great range, especially for football and baseball, and the built-in extender just adds to that. It's easy to operate, with all of the switches being easy to use without looking. As for the performance, it's the usual top drawer Canon quality. With this lens and the Canon 70-200, you can cover any field of play and any sport. It's a beast of a price, but if you are serious about your shots, it's worth it. Even though it is lighter than most long range zooms, you still need a monopod for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding versatility I've been using this as my long glass almost exclusively for nearly two years as a photographer for The University of Iowa athletic department. I'd heard great things about it and couldn't wait to try it out, and I've not been disappointed. The extra reach is great for sports like football and soccer, but I can also use it on the baseline of a basketball game to shoot as tight as I can when the action is at the other end of the floor. The only drawback I've encountered is at night, where I would still prefer either a 400 f/2.8 or a 600 f/4. Overall, I'd give it a 4.75/5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible lens Received a couple of weeks ago, have shot two NFL games. Still learning but immediate results are incredible. Moving from a 300 F2.8, I now have a range of 200mm - 560mm. Now I can cover the majority of the football (American) field and capture action in great detail. Paired with a Canon 1DX,it is the most flexible setup and the quality of image and build is incredible. The price is extremely high but if you can justify it, you will not be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a lens Brilliant lens !! I am an aviation photographer and just got back from a shoot in California with the U.S. Navy. Used it with and without extender without change in results. Is it a little heavy? Yes but I had no problem hand holding it for most of the day in windy conditions. It is expensive but one of the best if not the best lens I have used in the pro Canon line for performance and versatility. If you can pull it off financially don't hesitate you will not be unhappy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding but pricey I bought this to replace my 600 mm prime lens, which was very good quality, but an absolute "beast" to handle. The photos taken with the 200-400 are just as good as the prime lens photos, but you get the ability to frame the photo with the telephoto adjustment and a lens that weighs much less than the 600. However, this lens is too heavy to hand hold, it needs a sturdy tripod and gimbal head. I am amazed that a telephoto lens with an extender can match the picture quality of a prime lens, but I guess that is where the price comes in, it is really expensive, so much so that it took me years to cave into the price. I am glad I took the plunge and bought it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens but heavy The optics are tremendous and when paired with the new 1dx the images are stunning. I have shot mostly wildlife and some sports. You can hand hold a few shots with high shutter speeds but this is meant to be used w/ a monopod or tripod. I was surprised that I found myself using this lens much more than my 500/4 II during recent wildlife shoot in Tetons; the flexibility of the zoom was very helpful. The only negative (besides cost) is its weight; it is definitely bulkier and heavier than the 500.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AwesomeLens Primary use is for nature/wildlife photography. Prior to purchase I considered and tested the EF 400 F2.8 and the EF 400 DO F4 lens. The high versatility of the 200mm to 560mm range offered by this lens was the major decision factor in purchasing this lens. I took delivery just before the peak of the spring warbler migration and have shot 2000 pictures over the last four weeks. The picture quality is awesome and my ratio of quality shots has significantly improved. Autofocus has been excellent, there is a slight increase in focus time with the 1.4x extender engaged, but it has not limited by ability to capture rapidly moving warblers. I predominantly shoot handheld (90% of the time) and I'm getting excellent pictures with shutters speeds in the 1/200 - 1/320 range using a 5D MK III. Although not exactly light, I have carried on a 12.2 mile trip using a BlackRapid strap.

    question

This is a difficult decision...I'm looking to buy either the 200-400mm f/4L or the 500mm f/4L.Even though the 200-400 has a built in 1.4x extender, can I add another 1.4 or 2x extender as well?I like the versatility of the zoom & I like the lower price and longer reach of the 500...
    Asked by: Anonymous
It is possible to use a 1.4x converter with this lens, you would need to first pre-focus with the internal 1.4x converter and then focus on your subject, then remove the lens, apply the external 1.4x converter, and the focus should be retained once you re-mount the lens. However, you will be better off with the 500mm f/4L to achieve the same effect without the efforts.

    question

What is the difference between the two drop-in polarizer filters that are pictured/offered in the accessories section for this lens? There's a $60.00 difference in price.
    Asked by: Robert M.
The Canon PL-C 52WII 52mm Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter B&H # CACPDI52Q has greater light transmission than the Canon 2585A001 52mm Circular Polarizing Filter (Rear Drop-in) B&H # CACPDI52, hence the higher price point.

Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L vs the 400mm f/2L to shoot soccer and track?
    Asked by: Mark G.
Great sports lens. To be able to zoom in and out. A lot less weight, 400mm 2.8. Still not light. But, I have been using big glass for a lot of years. One of the best lens that I have ever owned.

    question

Previously a guy asked what the final cost of the Canon 200-400mm zoom lens would be if shipped out of state and purchased by card on line. Would that price also hold for me here in Iowa if I were to purchase the lens as stated above? I am very seriously considering ordering this lens! What would the final price for me in Iowa be if I made the purchase?
    Asked by: Anonymous
Shipping fees are calculated based on size, weight and desitnation of the order. You may calculate your actual shipping options/order totals by adding the items you want to a shopping cart. It will then list the shipping options, descriptions, Estimated Times of Arrival and fees to your location. (doing this much will not commit you to an order, but is simply a way to calculate your order costs.

    question

Is it possible to add a 2x extender to this lens? If so, what will the maximum aperture be, and will autofocus work? A previous answer mentioned adding the 1.4x but didn't say anything about the 2x. I am thinking about using this lens for wildlife photography in situations where it would be difficult or problematic to use my 600mm lens (to which I often add the 1.4x or 2x extender) due to weight and the need for a tripod.
    Asked by: Jenny R.
I use it with a 2x, however you have to manual focus as autofocus will not work with an add'l 2x. Aperature goes from 4.0 to 8.0
