Great product. They don't slip. The follow focus remains in place. The matte box slides well.

Nothing stands out as special about these rails. They’re good, solid rails at an inexpensive price.

I've been looking at 15mm rods for a DSLR support system (thinking I can get what I want by buying the individual pieces). But there is such a vast difference in pricing of rods by different manufacturers. Does anyone know why? What makes an $80 set better than a $16 set? Is it wall thickness, or surface finish or "grip-ability" or what? Thanks.

Not that I have noticed. I love used Tilta rods and these SmallRig rods. Both worked without any problems. I’d say you’re good with going with more inexpensive rods.
