Are tilt and shift directions independent?

Are tilt and shift directions independent?
Asked by: Wolfgang
The tilt axis is perpendicular to the shift axis and the two cannot be reoriented independently of one another like for example a Canon TSE lens. It would've been nice to have that ability but it would've made for a much more expensive adapter and there may not have been enough spare flange distance to engineer a mechanism depending on which mounts you're buying for. I bought the Hassy/Nikon one and there isn't a lot of free space for the mechanisms. As an architectural shooter, having tilt and shift on the same axis would've been infinitely more useful. Nikon's tilt shift lenses can at least be modified to do this.
