Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ overview

  • 1Description

B&H assembled this Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ 70mm f/13 Alt-Az Refractor Telescope with Mars Observing Kit to give new astronomers the tools they need to view Mars and other planets. The kit includes the telescope, manual mount, and a sturdy tripod, plus three planetary eyepiece filters, and a multi-function Barlow lens.

  • Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ 70mm f/13 Alt-Az Refractor Telescope

Celestron designed the AstroMaster 70AZ 70mm f/13 Alt-Az Refractor Telescope as a multi-function starter-scope that can be used for both astronomical and terrestrial viewing. Its medium aperture and long focal length allow it to draw in a generous amount of light with a high magnification potential to allow observation of the larger planets and the moon. The included 90° diagonal has an integrated erecting prism that corrects the view to enable the scope's use on land. Celestron includes two eyepieces for high and medium magnifications.

The AstroMaster is outfitted with a manual alt-azimuth mount and to make finding and tracking objects easy, there is an altitude control handle and an azimuth lock. Supporting the mount and optical tube is a stainless-steel tripod with sturdy 1.25" diameter legs and an adjustable height from 24 to 41-inches. Its center accessory tray pulls double-duty as a convenient place to eyepieces and smartphones while it locks the legs in place to improve stability and reduce vibrations.

    Optical Tube
    • 70mm aperture
    • f/13 focal ratio
    • 900mm focal length
    • Anti-reflection fully coated optics improve light transmission, color rendition, and contrast
    • Resolution: Rayleigh: 1.99 arcsec; Dawes: 1.66 arcsec
    • Rack-and-pinion focuser with 1.25" drawtube
    • Dovetail plate allows OTA to be attached to mount quickly and without tools
    Mount and Tripod
      Mount:
    • Manual alt-azimuth
    • Control handle helps to adjust altitude
    • Azimuth lock reduces vibration and additional movement
    • Dovetail saddle accepts OTA plate
      Tripod:
    • 1.25" stainless steel legs
    • Adjustable height from 24-41"
    • Accessory tray locks in-place for added stability and vibration reduction
    • Spiked feet provided additional stability on soft, rough, or uneven ground
    Eyepieces and Accessories
      Eyepieces:
    • 1.25" diameter barrels accept most astronomical filters
    • 10mm produces 90x magnification
    • 20mm yields 45x power
      Diagonal:
    • 90° angle places user's head in a comfortable viewing position
    • Built-in erecting prism corrects view for terrestrial use as a conventional spotting scope
    • 1.25" barrel and eyepiece holder
      StarPointer Finderscope:
    • Unmagnified to provide and exceptionally wide field of view to make finding subjects fast, and star-hopping navigation easy
    • Projects a center aiming dot that won't obscure the subject
    • Variable intensity center dot won't affect night-adjusted vision

  • Celestron Mars Observing Telescope Accessory Kit (1.25")

Celestron assembled this 1.25" Mars Observing Telescope Accessory Kit for the 2018 Mars Opposition, but the filters assembled can be used at any time to view and photograph other planets such as Saturn and Jupiter, as well as the moon. Also included with the filters is the universal Barlow lens. This versatile accessory effectively doubles the magnification of any eyepiece used in it without affecting the exit pupil or eye relief—allowing for high-power observations without the discomfort of using short focal length eyepieces. The Barlow has standard T-mount threads on the end that accept optional camera-specific T-rings to mount just about any DSLR for astrophotography. To safely store and transport the filters and Barlow, Celestron includes a hard plastic storage case.

    Eyepiece Filters
    #80A Blue:
    • Helpful in studying surface features and polar caps
    • Most popular for the study of detail on Jupiter and Saturn
    • Enhances the contrast on Jupiter's cloud belts
    • Enhances details of the Great Red Spot
    • Brings out detail in Saturn's belts and polar features
    • Also very useful for lunar observing
    #56 Light Green:
    • Excellent for increased contrast of Martian polar caps, low clouds, and yellowish dust storms
    • Increases the contrast of the red and blue regions in Jupiter's atmosphere and cloud belts
    • Great for lunar observing
    #25 Red:
    • Reduces light from blue and green areas, which darkens the maria and oases, while lightening the orange-hued desert region; sharpens the boundaries of yellow dust clouds
    • Blocks the transmission of blue and green wavelengths
    • Sharply defines the contrast between the cloud formations and the lighter-toned surface features on Jupiter

    Barlow Lens
    • 1.25" eyepiece holder and barrel diameter
    • Effectively doubles the magnification of any eyepiece used with it
    • Threads on top accept optional standard camera-specific DSLR T-rings
