Synology Seagate Overview

This B&H Kit combines the Synology DiskStation DS218 2-Bay NAS Enclosure with two Seagate 4TB IronWolf 5900 rpm SATA III 3.5" hard drives for a total storage capacity of 8TB.

Synology DiskStation DS218 2-Bay NAS Enclosure

Designed for small offices and home users, the DiskStation DS218 2-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology allows users to share and synchronize files across multiple devices and public cloud storage services from virtually anywhere, while also helping to boost work productivity, enhance team collaboration, and engage in real-time 4K H.265 video transcoding. It is equipped with two drive bays that are capable of natively supporting 3.5" SATA hard drives, as well as 2.5" SATA hard drives and SSDs. Using its dual drive bays, this NAS will allow you to store and share a large number of files, including videos, music, photos, and documents with up to 2048 user accounts.

The DS218 runs on Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS, which is a browser-based operating system which helps to simplify managing your Synology NAS. Its CPU is a 1.4 GHz Realtek RTD1296 Quad-Core, and its 2GB of DDR4 RAM allows frequently-used files and applications to be quickly accessed. The NAS is capable of achieving sequential read and write speeds of up to 112 MB/s, while a dedicated hardware transcoding engine can transcode 10-bit 4K H.265 video on-the-fly. Also featured are two USB 3.0 Type-A ports and one USB 2.0 Type-A port, which allow it to be connected to your Windows or Mac system, and network connectivity is achieved via the integrated Gigabit Ethernet port, allowing your stored data to be shared with users throughout the network. Data may also be made remotely available through the free iOS and Android applications. Using the integrated 4K multimedia server on the DS218, Video Station and DS video can be used to convert and play 4K videos from most computers, mobile devices and other media players that don't support Ultra HD formats.

For those who require RAID support, the DS218 supports RAID 0 and 1, as well Synology Hybrid RAID and Basic RAID, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.

The DS218 is engineered to be energy efficient. Not only does it offer a 92 x 92mm fan to help keep the system running cool at all times, its noise dampening design of 19.3 dB(A) makes for quiet operations. The server supports numerous scheduled power on / off cycles and hard drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses.

The Synology DiskStation DS218 2-Bay NAS Enclosure operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes an accessory pack, a 60W AC power adapter, a power cord, and an RJ45 LAN cable. It is protected by a limited 2-year warranty.

Synology Seagate Reviews

Great replacement for WD MyCloud

By Ronald
Rated 5 out of 5
Date: 2021-12-27

I bought this DiskStation to replace an aging Western Digital MyCloud device. I wanted a unit that supported RAID 1 disk duplication and allowed for future disk upgrades to a larger capacity. This unit nicely met those requirements. Installing the hard drives in the DiskStation was easy, I just followed the diagrams in the instructions. The instructions then gave me a link to a web address where I registered the product and downloaded the disk management system. The system installed and then formatted the hard drives. I opted to do a disk check as part of the formatting, so I let it run overnight. Next day it was finished and ready to go. I use this device to store system backups from six different PCs over my home network. I was able to modify my existing backup scripts to point to the new device. I was also able to copy files from my old device to the new one over the network. So far it has worked flawlessly. It is quiet and I like that it spins down the disks when they have been inactive for a period of time. As an added bonus, it backs up my systems faster than the old device did.

What a pleasure to have this unit

I have tried FreeNAS and other means of having a systematic backup at home as well as file sharing from home but I didn't have success and I am not tech savvy. While the automatic backup through the USB external Drive setup did require a help of a friend I am able to use the new unit as my home cloud and backup system successfully. Even though I needed some technical help of a friend I am still giving a 5star because the product seems to be of a good quality and very feature rich at a price I couldn't find anywhere else.

Very easy to setup. Needed additional backup storage for my data. Partitioned the NAS for raid 5 for potential drive failure.

I have both the Asustor AS6604T and the Synology DS920+, each with Seagate IronWolf 4 TB drives. Frankly, I purchased the Synology after being extremely disappointed because you can't set up video surveillance on the Asustor without using Windows. Its driver for the Mac simply doesn't work, and Asustor shows no interest in fixing their software issues. In its surveillance mode, the DS920+ is entirely browser-based, and works quite well with both MacOS and Ubuntu Linux clients. No hassle, just works right out of the box. Kudos to Synology. One annoyance so far - I've transferred my music to the DS920+ and use the Audio Station app to listen. If I have the app open on two computers and play a folder on one, then a different folder on the other computer, the second computer will start playing the first computer's folder after the first song. Both NAS brands make it easy to set up NFS mounts and AFS - I don't use SMB since I don't have Windows. Synology is more restrictive when using command line after an SSH login, but it's understandable they'd be very protective of the underlying Linux operating system. If I had purchased the DS920+ first, I would not now be the owner of two NAS devices. It's the clear and obvious choice if you want to use the video surveillance feature. The surveillance app doesn't measure up to enterprise systems (I've used exacqVision previously), but it's a good effort and has been compatible with the few cameras I've thrown at it. Drive installation requires no tools, nor does the addition of NVMe cache or additional RAM, neither of which I plan to do. I've previously used a larger Synology NAS product in a college environment, completely rock-solid with uptimes measured in years.
