Synology DiskStation DS218 External HDD Reviews
Easy to set up, but no minimal documentation
The Synology DS218 and dual hard drives were easy to set up and begin using. The booklet had illustrations on how to get up and running, but that's about it. Fortunately I had watched a few videos online before receiving my NAS so I somewhat knew what to expect and what steps to take. The NAS itself is great, and more powerful than I expected, but Synology really should provide better documentation on how to get things set up. They have good video tutorials, but someone less tech savvy might not know where to begin.
Great replacement for WD MyCloud
I bought this DiskStation to replace an aging Western Digital MyCloud device. I wanted a unit that supported RAID 1 disk duplication and allowed for future disk upgrades to a larger capacity. This unit nicely met those requirements. Installing the hard drives in the DiskStation was easy, I just followed the diagrams in the instructions. The instructions then gave me a link to a web address where I registered the product and downloaded the disk management system. The system installed and then formatted the hard drives. I opted to do a disk check as part of the formatting, so I let it run overnight. Next day it was finished and ready to go. I use this device to store system backups from six different PCs over my home network. I was able to modify my existing backup scripts to point to the new device. I was also able to copy files from my old device to the new one over the network. So far it has worked flawlessly. It is quiet and I like that it spins down the disks when they have been inactive for a period of time. As an added bonus, it backs up my systems faster than the old device did.
Great Gear!
This item arrived from B&H very quickly! The SpaceRex videos on YouTube were very helpful for setup help.
My New NAS Upgrade
Purchased the Synology Diskstation DS218 kit with two WD Red Plus NAS drives to replace a pair of aging consumer level single drive network drives from another brand. I chose the DS218 over the newer and more powerful DS220+ as I wanted the additional USB port for use with a UPS while retaining the ability to connect a backup drive at the rear. I did not feel I needed the redundant LAN connection and while the Celeron processor would have been nice I do not anticipate needing the processing power. I am liking the benefits of the Raid 1 configuration and the recycle bin not provided by my previous boxes. Initial setup was straight forward as far as getting the DS218 up and running. After that it can be a bit overwhelming as there are many options available in settings that were not offered in my earlier home user oriented drives. Fortunately, there is a lot of information and advise available through Synology and other internet sources. Liking the recycle bin, snapshots, and other features that were lacking in my old setup.
What a pleasure to have this unit
I have tried FreeNAS and other means of having a systematic backup at home as well as file sharing from home but I didn't have success and I am not tech savvy. While the automatic backup through the USB external Drive setup did require a help of a friend I am able to use the new unit as my home cloud and backup system successfully. Even though I needed some technical help of a friend I am still giving a 5star because the product seems to be of a good quality and very feature rich at a price I couldn't find anywhere else.
Faster than my old Seagate GoFlex NAS
I had my GoFlex NAS for several years now and somehow its software can not keep up with Mac software updates. This is my first time using Synology DiskStation. Besides noticing faster file transfer, this system offers lots of features and good Control Panel interface. The default setting is Raid 1 - disk mirroring for redundancy. I am very happy with my purchase. I just hope this will last for a long time like the reliable GoFlex. Thanks Synology and B&H.
Not what I needed, but a great value bundle
I ended up getting the DS720+ but kept the two drives. I'm not sure what to do with the enclosure for this now, but it was a great deal.
The perfect solution for large image, music & video files
I'm a photographer. When I order a new MacBook Pro M1 Max in October, I purchased the Synology 24TB DS218 NAS for less than upgrading the MacBook from a 1TB SSD to a 6TB SSD, and a third less than upgrading to an 8TB SSD. The Synology software made it quick and easy to configure the NAS, and when I attached USB drives to the NAS enclosure, transferring large amounts of files to the 24TB NAS through the Synology desktop was very fast. So now I have years of photo files, music files, and video files all in one place that I can access from multiple computers. I recently ordered a Synology DS220+ NAS from B&H that I'm using to back up the 24TB DS218 NAS.
