FUJIFILM XF 200mm f/2 R Overview

Distinguished by its long reach and bright design, the FUJIFILM XF 200mm f/2 R LM OIS WR is a 305mm-equivalent lens further characterized by its sophisticated optical layout, fast performance, and apt image stabilization. Well-suited for sports, events, and wildlife photography, the impressive f/2 maximum aperture suits working in a variety of lighting conditions and also promotes working with shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques. The optical design features three extra-low dispersion elements, including one Super ED element, which help to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy by controlling fringing and chromatic aberrations. Complementing the optics is a linear motor-based autofocus system, which offers fast, near-silent performance for both stills and video use. Suiting the lens's use in inclement conditions, it is also weather-sealed to resist and dust and moisture and a fluorine coating has been applied to the front element.

In addition to the lens itself, the dedicated XF 1.4x TC F2 WR Teleconverter is also included in this kit, and extends the focal length by 1.4x to result in an equivalent 427mm focal length. This teleconverter maintains all automated functions and image stabilization, and its optical design incorporates one aspherical element to control distortion and spherical aberrations.

XF 200mm f/2 R LM OIS WR Lens
Telephoto prime lens is designed for APS-C-format FUJIFILM X-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 305mm equivalent focal length.
Notably fast f/2 maximum aperture affords greater control over depth of field for isolating subject matter and also suits working in low-light conditions.
Three extra-low dispersion elements, including one Super ED element, are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce high clarity and color fidelity.
Super EBC coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Linear motor autofocus system delivers smooth, near-silent performance that is especially beneficial to video applications and when working in noise-sensitive areas. An additional mechanism also fixes the focus motor group in place when the camera is turned off to reduce any unwanted vibrations during storage or travel.
Focus range limiter switch allows you to constrain the focus range to between 16.4' to infinity or for the whole 5.9' to infinity range for more responsive focusing depending on the distance to your subject.
Focus Preset Function instantly changes your focus position to a pre-selected position for faster focus switching.
Focus Control button at the tip of the lens can be assigned to a desired focusing function of choice, including Focus Preset, AF-ON, or Focus Lock.
Optical stabilization system minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to five stops to enable sharper imaging when shooting handheld or working with slower shutter speeds.
The lens body incorporates 17 distinct weather seals to protect against dust and moisture, and to enable worry-free use in inclement conditions and freezing temperatures as low as 14°F.
A fluorine coating has been applied to the front lens element to guard against smudging, moisture, and dust.
Fixed rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod. The tripod foot is also Arca-type compatible for direct mounting to tripod heads and also has 1/4" and 3/8" sockets for attaching to quick release plates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
XF 1.4x TC F2 WR Teleconverter
Included with the 200mm f/2 lens is the dedicated 1.4x teleconverter, which extends the effective focal length to 280mm, for an equivalent focal length of 427mm.
Optical design has seven elements in four groups, including one aspherical element to reduce distortion and maintain high sharpness.
Retains all AF, AE, and image stabilization functions of the 200mm f/2 lens, as well as the same minimum focusing distance of 5.9'.
Requires one additional stop of light, making the effective maximum aperture f/2.8.
Teleconverter adds an additional 0.6" to the overall length of the lens system along with an additional 4.6 oz of weight.

Great Lens/Great Value on Sale

The Fujifilm XF 200mm is a magnificent instrument in terms of its build and its optics. It is sharp and built like a tank. Even the lens case is perfect. The total package is a throwback to another era in terms of build and attention to detail--a marriage of engineering and craftsmanship. I always considered this lens an eloquent solution for the x system in terms of speed and focal length. The teleconverter adds flexibility--280mm at F/2.8 with very little impact on the image. The regular retail price of $6k was high, but not out of the ballpark when compared to 300mm f/2.8 lenses offered by other brands. A deal on sale at $3999. My only complaint relates to the X system. The lens is one part of the system. Fuji needs to build a camera body worthy of this lens. Fuji can start by improving its AF.

My preferred lens for bird photography

I started using Fujifilm X-gear in 2017. I live in Bishop, California, and take photographs while walking in the Owens Valley, Death Valley, and the Sierra Nevada. I wanted light-weight gear that could produce excellent landscape images. My first Fuji zoom was the XF50-140, bought in 2018. Using the 1.4x teleconverter, I found I could capture bird images. In May of 2020 I bought the XF100-400mm zoom. Initially I used this only with a tripod. In September 2020 I tried photographing birds with the XF100-400, but I found it hard to handle without a tripod. Eventually I learned to hold it properly and by January 2021 I was getting photos of birds in flight, using the XF100-400 with my XT4. I carry this rig upside-down with the lens foot attached to a clamp and strap made by Really Right Stuff. I soon had an image collection of eagles, hawks, herons, and egrets in flight. But I was missing shots in early morning, the best time to find birds here, because of the slow aperture.              In Feb of 2021 I bought the expensive XF200mmf2. In my first 2 days with this lens I found it hard to hold. For example, I missed shots of a flying Northern Harrier because I bumped the aperture ring off of the auto setting. But on days 3 and 4, I used a better grip on the lens and starting capturing flying birds. The lens makes bird photos easier thanks to 1) fast auto-focus, 2) great light gathering ability, so the ISO stays low, and 3) sharp images even when wide open. I use it with the 1.4 teleconverter, giving me a 280mm focal length, equivalent to 426mm full-frame. My previous experience with the XF100-400mm lens was valuable; it helped me get up to speed quickly with the heavier XF200mm. In addition, I read a lot of about bird photography techniques, so my learning curve with the XF200mm was short and painless. If fast auto-focus and big aperture are a useful combo for you, then this lens is worth the price. If you don’t need to shoot quickly in low light, the XF100-400 does a fine job for less money.

Where’s the 2X Teleconverter?

This is a great lens, but tops out at 425mm F2.8 with the 1.4X teleconverter. Where is a 2x teleconverter for the Fuji 200mm? It’s Fuji’s only long, fast tele, and at F2 it’s made for a 2X teleconverter. What’s taking so long? A great start in the Fuji line-up but it’s not long enough for some wildlife. Really needs a 2X to complete the package.

Great lens !

This is the most beautiful piece of glass I've ever owned. Even on a 26mp APS-C sensor camera it's resolving more detail than a 36mp full frame Nikon with 300mm f/2.8 lens attached. This lens is something special. Very fast focus, superb stabilization, and almost no change in image quality with the dedicated Fuji teleconverter attached. I was stalking a baby bunny around my yard with it, with TC attached and an X-T3 non-stabilized body. As far as large aperture telephotos go, it's also very light. I used to carry around an old 400mm f/2.8 AIS manual focus lens, because it was all I could afford at the time, and this is like a pocket lens in comparison, lol. This lens is a razor, with great bokeh, great autofocus, great stabilization, and it's dead sexy to boot. The tripod foot even has a built-in Arca-swiss plate. I couldn't ask for more. I just got the X-H2 and can't wait to see what it's capable of with 40 megapixels.
