The WS X299 SAGE/10G LGA 2066 CEB Motherboard from Asus is a workstation motherboard built with the connectivity and features you need for training neural networks and crunching other scalable compute loads. It's a great board and works flawlessly but the top pcie slot is a little too close to the ram and causes some interference with a graphics card backplate, the pcie 6 pin plug can be in a better place, and there could be more io connectors

Good for deep learning

This board works well with windows and Linux. We are running Linux and doing deep learning with an rtx titan. So far everything is smooth. The only thing to consider is the first pcie slot is close to the processor so choose your cooler well if you want to use the first slot. But overall a great board for a scientific ws with multiple gpu. Noteably used in many of the deep learning boxes by several vendors.

Be careful about the bios

I bought this motherboard to do a machine learning build. The board itself look very solid, with sufficient amount of x16 pcie lanes. It could support up to 4 gtx 1080 ti without any problem. And there are 8 memory slots. Other components are: i9 7940x, 8X16Gb gskill ram, 3X1080ti gpu, WD 512G m.2 SSD.  However, I experienced a lot of trouble when trying to make this motherboard work. First, with initial bios, it is almost impossible to get ubuntu installed, I have tried 16.04, 17.04 and 18.04, all failed, it may boot, however, the computer will show a lot of hardware error in later use. And the system is very unstable.   When updated to the latest bios(0601 at the time of writing), Ubuntu 18.04 was successfully installed, and it seemed that there was no hardware error. However, if you use Tensorflow (I did not try other deep learning frameworks), the computer will reboot when you try to train some models. Whats even worse is that, some combination of tf.load_op_library(custom_cuda_module.so) will also reboot the computer and there is no way to find any useful information in the log. It took me a lot of time to finally confirmed that this bug is not caused by power supply, CPU or RAM. The solution is simple, just downgrade to previous bios version(0502), however, who knows how many hidden bugs could get triggered by other codes in the future.

Problematic bios for machine learning build

The physical quality of this motherboard looks good, it allows installation of 4 GPU which is very good for machine learning build.  However, the bios is very problematic, with the initial bios, I encountered countless hardware errors while installing different versions of ubuntu.  I finally installed ubuntu 18.04 with the latest bios (0601 at the time of writing). However, the computer will reboot if you try to run tensorflow code, this makes training impossible. Another situation is that, if you try to load several custom cuda ops(tf.load_op_library(custom_cuda_module.so), the computer will reboot. It seems that there are some CPU GPU communication bugs inside the motherboard. After downgrading to bios 0502, those problems are gone, however, who knows how many hidden bugs are there insides the bios. I am little worried that in the future some other code will cause the computer reboot.

Robust Workstation board. highly recommend!

I gave it only 4 stars because its missing USB 2.0 board headers. almost all cases have USB 2.0 in the front. Also the Corsair water cooled kit requires USB 2.0 header and this board does not have it. for such a price its a con. otherwise the board rocks away in performance

7 slots, three wasted by my graphic card :)

This is a solid board. It has 7 expansion slots. But when I installed my 2080 Ti ROG Strix it covered three of them! The card connects only on the first slot but next two are covered by the extension of the parts and fans. This makes me wonder, dont the mobo manufacturers know by now that premium graphic cards take up two or three slot widths so they should NOT put the second slot this close on a premium board? This is a CEB size board, but alas! Btw, the Asus Hyper M.2 X16 (both V1 and V2) will NOT work on this mobo, those will only work when populated with only one M.2 chip. When checked with Asus they said it is because of the PLX chip this mobo uses. They do not say that on their web site about the Hyper M.2 X16 V2. You need to find out the hard way.
