Sony PXW-X70 overview

  • 1Description

The PXW-X70 Advanced Video Journalist Kit with Backpack, Trolley, Rain Slicker, Wireless Mic System & Tripod is a B&H kit that includes the Sony PXW-X70 compact professional HD camcorder, a UWP-D11 wireless microphone system with a body pack lavalier microphone, an F-112 handheld microphone, a multi-interface shoe adapter, ECM-673/9x shotgun mic, on-camera LED light, MDR-7506 headphones, batteries with a charger, XLR cables, and other accessories.

The included tripod allows you to keep the camera steady during interview shots, and to make smooth pans and tilts with the use of a fluid video head. The kit also contains an on-camera LED light which is dimmable, can be set to match both indoor and outdoor lighting conditions, and is cool to the touch. It also uses the same rechargeable batteries that the camera uses, though it can also take AA batteries.

The PXW-X70 camcorder is designed to meet the demands of field video productions and professional studio applications. It features a 1" Exmor R Full HD CMOS sensor for reduced noise in low-light situations. The PXW-X70 features a 3.5" LCD viewfinder, built-in ND filters, NFC, and wireless LAN. A 32GB SDHC media card is included so you can start shooting right away, and the Zeiss lens cleaning kit is useful for keeping your lens pristine and ready to shoot.

Also in the kit are the Auray Windbuster to help prevent wind noise from damaging the audio captured by the included shotgun microphone, and a Porta Brace rain slicker made specifically to protect the PXW-X70 from dust and inclement weather. An included backpack helps you store your gear, and the trolley is for wheeling your gear around.

  • Sony PXW-X70 Professional XDCAM Compact Camcorder

Sony's PXW-X70 Professional XDCAM Compact Camcorder is about the same size as a conventional 1/3" professional compact camcorder, but it features a 1" type sensor, which is larger than a super-16 sized sensor and more than eight times the size of a 1/3" sensor. The larger Exmor R sensor size provides for more cinematic appearing depth of field than a 1/3" sensor is capable of and features a back-side illuminated design for improved low light performance. It features an integrated 12x optical zoom lens with a manual lens ring for zoom/focus control, and a three level switchable ND filter. The top handle incorporates two 3-pin XLR inputs for recording audio from XLR microphones.

The camera records HD video using the XAVC Long-GOP codec with 4:2:2, 10-bit color sampling at 50 Mb/second, providing footage with a high data rate that is suitable for broadcast applications. Sony's Slow & Quick Motion is built-into the camera. The camera features two SD card slots, allowing simultaneous and relay recording, and both a 3G-SDI and an HDMI output. The camera supports control via Wi-Fi using smartphones or tablets and the optional Content Browser Mobile application. Planned upgrades will allow the camera to record in 4K UHD as well as add file transfer and streaming via Wi-Fi.

    4K Upgrade
An optional upgrade via a license key (Sony part # CBKZ-X70FX) allows the camera to record 4K.
The 1" type sensor features 14.2 million effective pixels on a sensor that is more than 8 times larger than a 1/3" type sensor. The larger size of the pixels allows them to gather more light compared to a 1/3" sensor. The Exmor R designation indicates the sensor features a back-side illuminated design, which allows more light to reach the sensor's photosites for increased light sensitivity and less noise in low light conditions.
The PXW-X70 is a compact camcorder that weighs less than 3 pounds including the XLR handle unit, battery (NP-FV70), lens hood and large eye-cup. It features professional interfaces including 3G-SDI and HDMI output connectors, an XLR handle unit with zoom lever, a manual lens ring that can control zoom and focus, and an ergonomic palm grip with large zoom lever. Its records video to two SD memory card slots that can be used for simultaneous and relay recording and to backup files.
    The camera is capable of using Sony's Slow & Quick motion recording, which allows you to shoot at selectable frame rates (1, 2, 4, 8, 15, 30, 60 / 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, 25, 50.)
The integrated 12x optical zoom lens incorporates a three-level switchable ND filter, with 24x clear Image Zoom technology that retains the quality of the HD image, and a digital extender allows you to zoom up to 48x.
Multiple recording choices are available depending on application, including XAVC, AVCHD, and DV file-based recording. The PXW-X70 records in XAVC using the MXF file format, which efficiently compresses full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution using the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 CODEC. Color sampling is 4:2:2 10-bit with high-efficiency Long-GOP compression at 50 Mbps, 35 Mbps, or 25 Mbps for broadcast quality images.
Supporting Near Field Communication functions, the camera allows easy, one-touch wireless LAN connection to a smartphone or tablet, while the Content Browser Mobile application allows confirmation of shot angles and operation of the camcorder by remote, including spot focus and iris adjustment.

Sony PXW-X70 reviews

PXW-X70 Professional XDCAM Compact Camcorder is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 81.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent compact camera We bought one of these, then a second. Lightweight and compact. Footage keys well when shooting XAVC. Nice depth from the large sensor. We pair it with a Sennheiser MKE600 when doing run and gun. The Sennheiser is narrower than the mount on the handle , so I've used gaffers tape or fabric as a spacer. Recently 3d printed a nicer spacer, hoping does the trick. I've also seen people use a short length of rubber heater hose slipped over the mic. My only real gripes were the added cost of the 4K upgrade (but I knew that going in) and the single ring for focus and zoom. We keep it on focus and use the rockers for zoom, but it's a bit limiting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I really like this camera... Finally Sony has created the type of small camera I've always wanted. I've used a variety of cameras and always like having a small form factor on hand for certain types of jobs. The frustration has always been either lack of full manual controls (MC-50) or lack of pro features (AX-100). This camera has it all. The audio handle while having the convenience of being removable is incredibly sturdy when attached and top notch quality. The assignable buttons and pro style Sony menus (similar to EX1) are really nice. My only hope is that they will add a waveform monitor to the display. I never find histograms very helpful. Also hope the 4K upgrade is not over the top in price. Great job Sony!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An amazing Camera! This is an incredible little camera with a great new video codec that captures beautiful 422 10bit at 50Mb video. It has both PAL and NTSC frame rates. It comes with professional XLR audio inputs with Phantom power and an HD-SDI output. All this in a small light wight package for a great price. The XAVC Long GOP is now supported by Adobe Premiere CC 2014 and it works seamlessly. I was told by Sony that FCP X will support it in December. As a professional documentary filmmaker I am extremely pleased and excited about this Sony Camera and I can't wait for the 4k upgrade.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great and easy to use 4K camera I used to use DSLR type cameras to shoot my YouTube videos, but this was very time consuming to setup. I do this as a side gig and I just need something that is easy to setup, shoot, and edit. This camera has met that requirement as I can take shots of myself and zoom in to get macro product shots all without having to swap out lenses. It has sped up my workflow to get my videos out as quickly as possible. So I have been happy with this camera for my uses. It is important to note this camera does shoot 4K IF you buy the additional software license. Redeeming / generating the software license is a painful and confusing process.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Nice Camera but 4K upgrade falls short at 60Mbp/s I like the form factor of the X70. It's a wonderful grab and go camera. Audio features are nice, picture profiles are fantastic and the image sensor is clean and sharp. However, Sony has announced a future paid firmware update that will enable 4k. (similar to the cheaper Sony Ax100) But instead of matching the AX100's 100Mbp/s 4K bitrate, Sony has committed only to offering a lowly 60Mbp/s. This is quite shocking as the AX100 is a consumer Handycam and the X70 is a PROFESSIONAL XDCAM. The 4K upgrade puts the X70 as the LOWEST 4k bitrate camera in the entire camera industry. Even the Sony 4k Action Cam offers 100Mbp/s! Baffling indeed. If Sony follows the rest of the industry (Panasonic, Canon and JVC) and officially commits to 100Mbp/s like everybody else and just like ALL other Sony models, than the X70 gets 5 starts from me!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can now read XAVC files The Sony X70 is a great camera, the quality of even the AVCHD images is stunning. Many complained about not being able to read these files in most NLEs. Sony have just released 'Catalyst Prepare' This programme will read the files, but better still, will read old HVR files, MOV files and MTS files so it's now possible to do a rough cut with a range of cameras before loading into your NLE. so I think the X70 deserves 5 stars!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This a great camera. DON'T BUY IT. This is an amazing camera. It's everything it says it is...and B&H is a wonderful company with generally flawless service. But don't buy it. Why? Because Sony has what literally amounts to NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. When you call them, there are no direct lines to the tech people (unless you want to wait between 2 days and never). And even the simplest question can't be answered. So if you run into something that's really tough, you're stuck. If I'd known this, I'd have bought the new Canon XF100. Canon's service has always been great. I'm keeping mine, but I just thought I'd warn everyone else. When it comes to customer support, Sony is beyond bad.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice action stabilizer I'm giving 4 stars only because I haven't fully tested this yet. I just got it in the mail and turned it on. I can say the quality is all there. The camera has a super solid feel all around. The lens is pretty awesome too. I do a lot of run and gun, so my immediate concern was the stabilizer. The standard setting wasn't doing the job, but when switching to action stabilizer, it performs beautifully. I walked around with it and the shot looks super smooth. I will not need to get a steady cam!
