Profoto B10 Overview

  • 1Description

Profoto continues to affirm their commitment to full-featured flash systems with onboard TTL capability with the introduction of the impressive, battery-powered B10 OCF Flash Head. Part of the OCF family which began with the reduced-size B2 power pack, continued with the full-sized B1X monolight, and most recently the A1 shoe-mount Studio Light, the B10 combines the best characteristics of the monolight with those of auto-exposure, on-camera flashes. In a move that's consistent with their ongoing "techno-logic" Profoto packs all the features of the previous OCF lights into the 7" B10.

The 250Ws light has a 10-stop variable power range and swift recycle times of 0.05 to 2.2 seconds. Flash duration is an action-stopping 1/7,000 second but there's a Freeze Mode that prioritizes flash duration resulting in a very short 1/50,000 second at minimum power. The B10 is powered by a lithium-ion battery that gives a notable 400 full-power flashes on a 90 minute charge, while 60 minutes will top up the battery to 80% if you're short of time. Of course, one of the B10's most exciting features is TTL technology that takes advantage of your DSLR's flash auto-exposure system and significantly shortens the time between inspiration and execution and capture. The path to this great feature is purchase of an optional wireless radio Air Remote TTL controller which is currently made for Nikon, Canon, Fujifilm, Olympus, and Sony cameras.

The hot-shoe-mounting controller has 8 channels and 3 groups, ensuring minimal interference with other nearby systems and equipment. Each group can be controlled independently from one another, permitting +/-2 EV adjustment of power ratios for TTL systems and nine stops of manual control. It can trigger the B10 in manual mode at distances up to 1000 feet and in TTL mode up to 300 feet - the length of a football field. The B10 and the Air Remote TTL also support High Speed Sync with shutter speeds as quick as 1/8000 sec to give the photographer complete control of background illumination or to allow use of wide apertures for creative work. There's also a Profoto Smartphone App that allows you to capture well-lit images wirelessly with your phone.

Besides this multitude of features, the B10 has an LED modeling light with the equivalent power of a 150W incandescent lamp that's not only dimmable, but has color temperature that's variable from 3000 to 6500K. Its high CRI of 90-96 makes it usable for video. The battery will give you 75 minutes run time on full power.

A small form factor, battery power, remote control, photo and video compatibility, and smartphone connectivity make the B10 another impressive entry in the OCF roster.

    Profoto B10 Reviews

B10 OCF Flash Head is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Form and Great Compromise from Profoto I LOVE the idea of these lights.  Ive owned the B1 and the D1s and the concept of a more portable light that can double as a video light seems like the dream combo.  Batter powered that can also plug in!  Wow.   With my 3x4 Profoto softbox attached, however, I did notice that the mounting point of the detachable base had a hard time holding up the softbox without flexing.  I was surprised to see it flex as much as it did.  Also the little adjustment knob for the tilt head doesnt have a great surface area to grab effectively to adequately tighten the head for heavier modifiers.  All in all, I think its an amazingly portable solution of Profoto Quality !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I give it 5 starts but.... The short and skinny is this deserves 5 stars however the but above has to do with the price. As amazing as it works its hard to justify. I am transitioning from a landscape only photographer into a portrait photographer as well setting up my own business since retirement. Since I had no real gear for portrait photography I did a lot of reading and decided to buy into one system. The clear choice is Profoto and this lives up to the hype. With only limited knowledge about flash I was able to quickly get on step with the Profoto products including this one. If you now use Profoto or looking for what brand to go with and just want it to work and work well, this may be for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This kit brought me back to Profoto. The B10 is a fabulous light.  I had Acute2’s almost 20 years ago, but needed moonlights (vs. packs and heads) for shooting interiors. I switched to Paul C Buff lights (despite their terrible branding) and was mostly happy. Their radios were miles ahead of PocketWizards, but they have become, over time, more eradic and unreliable. I finally decided to upgrade to the B10’s. They are incredibly compact. One stop less power thato an Einstein, in a fraction of the size with a built-in radio. Yes, it’s 3x the price. But I haven’t had a single misfire yet and had multiple misfires every day with the Einsteins.  I have missed the Profoto quality. Top notch. Firmware upgrades and software function perfectly. You can’t go wrong. I will be selling all my Einsteins as soon as I can.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great light, better weight As an everyday user of the B1X have to say this may be my new favorite light.  Color and consistency is great.  Love the weight of it combined with the power is a perfect mixture.  Sure there are cheaper out there in the Godox world, but I like the peace of mind knowing the build quality and performance will always be there from my Profoto gear.  Highly recommended, now use this light every time I shoot which is about 4 days a week.  Battery lasts a good amount of time too on full power.  I tend to plug in between shoots though as there is no spare shipping yet so just have the one battery for now.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I dont like it Hello. I purchased the Profoto B10 kit. During shooting I noticed that the B10 and the Air TTL (about 0.3 m distance) don’t synchronize in the only one position. Please see this position in the photos. If I turn the B10 or move it to the right, left, up or down by 0.2 m, it’s OK! I tried both b10 blocks, and they don’t work in this position. Then I tried the same with B1, it works in any position. I think the problem is the placement of the receiver in B10. The same situation if I use light A1 as a synchronizer instead of Air TTL. I also tried to change radio channels, it hadn’t any effect. Control of monoblock also doesnt work in this situation, but bluetooth works fine. Unfortunately for me it matters, because I practice foodphoto .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Game Changer This unit while less powerful than the B1X provides me exactly what is needed in the field. No more fiddling/worrying if my batteries will hold up or are charged. No more worrying if the flash will fire and so-on. This gives me confidence with a few minutes to setup test and go. The features and quality of light are much better than my flash units. At this point this will definitely be the primary light and the smaller flash units will be used as fill or secondary lighting. I am very happy to now be a part of the Profoto family.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small and nice light set I like the size and has sufficient power for my needs, mostly location portraits.   Battery lasts for 3 hour session without problems.  I like that you can trickle charge while you are shooting if necessary.  Phone app makes adjusting the power very convenient.  I wish the AIR TTL remote was better though.

The B10 cannot be triggered by the Canon ST-E3-RT, as its internal receiver can only be triggered by the Profoto Air Remote TTL-C for Canon B&H # PRARTTL. https://bhpho.to/2gipRDJ

As they say it is compatible with 120 Profoto light-shaping tools, I assume I can use my rfi speedring and softboxes on the B10. I wonder how it can handle the weight, though. Anyone do this yet?

The Profoto B10 OCF Flash Head is compatible with both the Profoto OCF light shaping tools and the Profoto RFi softboxes using the Profoto RFi Speed Ring for Profoto Flash Heads, B&H # PRSRP. All Profoto RFi softboxes, octaboxes, and strip boxes would be compatible for use with the Profoto B10 OCF Flash Head using the speedring listed above.
