Canon SX740 HS Reviews

User System Interface Needs Improvement

Camera takes great photos, but figuring out how to use it and get the best performance is a challenge. The symbiology and labeling of the controls and displays are not always clear. The User's Manual is of ABSOLUTELY NO use. This is because it is NOT functionally oriented, describing the procedure to accomplish a specific purpose.

Great Digital Zoom, Easy To Configure

Over the years I've had several Canon models, i.e. SD700, SD870IS and SD260HS. As I advanced in features, I gave my old camera to my wife. She recently lost hers so I bought her the SX740HS. I stepped through the setup menus and had little problems; they are well organized and fairly easy to find my way around based on my experience with previous models. I really like the 40X optical zoom and it seems easy to take clear pics zoomed out. Really nice that it chooses closeup mode automatically when needed. The flip up screen seems nice but it does make it a little heavier and thicker. I don't have much experience taking selfies since I've never used a smartphone so right now it is of dubious value to me. Lastly, the ability to create folders on the camera and store photos in a different folder seems like it will be useful. I've only had it for two weeks so I have lots to learn. My wife seemed to follow the setup menus fairly well despite not having my experience in that area.

Love This Camera

I needed a camera for traveling that was simple, easy to use, easy to carry, and could take some good distance shots. This camera fits it all. I've been able to take some wonderful bird shots, even using my binos at the end of the lense. And it tucks so easily into my back pack. I'm no photographer and don't know all of the photographers lingo but I hope this camera lasts me a long time.

To Be Useful, Great Magnification Requires an EVF

I am a four decades long loyal Canon Camera fan going back to the A-1. These potentially great Canon cameras with affordable long lens of fantastic (40 - 60x magnification) must have an Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) to make any practical use of the great magnification. These are like trying to waggle a small diameter stirring stick at arms length and expect you can identify and image your point of interest when using the large screen on the camera back at arms length — it is a frustratingly difficult to impossible. Yet they put an EVF on a 4x camera. To compete with high quality smart phone cameras Canon must bring something unique to their platforms the smart phone form factor cannot. I finally found a high-magnification lens with EVF camera by a competitor brand. ADD AN EVF TO SOME OF YOUR LONG-LENS SMALL DIGITAL CAMERAS! PLEASE!

Exactly what I was looking for.

I was in the market for a good, hand held with a strong zoom.I have always been a fan of Canon, and after researching other cameras decided this was the one I wanted. B&H had it in stock and head it shipped to me in 2 days. I love the camera and the features, I use it for ski and mountain photos and it's size and zoom are exactly what I need.

This is my third Canon camera I have owned and most expensive. The first two gave me great service for many years. I expect the same of this one. I have only used my camera twice since I purchased it. Each time I use it I become more comfortable with it. I am enjoying the most powerful zoom lenses I have owned. The pictures have come out better than expected. It is light-weight and small enough to fit in my pocket. Most of the buttons some what easy to figure out. I haven't tried the video option yet. It is curious, that the Bluetooth options to not include a PC. They options are for a cellphone, printer, or cloud.

Great Camera. Sharp Pictures. Pretty Descent Zoom. Only One thing can make it better. That would be a touch screen. It's Worth Getting.

For those who use this for nature, landscape, and birding - is it at all water and weather resistant? How about the case - waterproof?
Asked by: Carol
I’ve owned several versions of this camera over the years. I do NOT think you should consider it water or weather resistant. It’s a great camera, and I use it every day for nature shooting. But I would never expose it to extreme weather. And about the case — what case? This camera does not come with a case.

Can I use this camera for shooting 4K video of computer builds and able to use it as a facecam for twitch/YouTube streaming? Thanks in advance.

To answer your requirements, I recommend you review the online Canon SX740 HS User Guide before your purchase. http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/1/0300031221/01/pssx740hs-cu-en.pdf The 3.0-inch tilt-type LCD may be helpful for the applications that you mentioned. Also, you might need to know that the Canon SX740 HS has a crop for 4K video. I use this camera for general photography in the field, and I keep the camera in its case attached to my belt. I have been very happy with the Canon SX740 HS.

Can the movie button be turned off?
Asked by: John
The video record/stop button is small and recessed (unlike the shutter button), so it's unlikely you'd press it by accident. Unfortunately, the button's design is a problem when you need to press it again to stop the video recording. It messes up and makes jerky the last couple seconds of video recording while you're trying to find and then press the button.
