Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4.0 overview

  • 1Description

Lightweight and versatile, the Nikon F-mount 17-35mm f/2.8-4 DI OSD Lens from Tamron covers a range of wide-angle focal lengths while maintaining a bright maximum aperture. The variable aperture of f/2.8-4 provides exceptional control over depth of field and allows enough light in to excel in many low-light situations. Housed in the lens, which weighs slightly more than a pound, are 15 elements in 10 groups that include Tamron's Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Coating to reduce reflections, ghosting, and flares. The front lens element is coated in fluorine to more easily dispel dirt, dust, moisture, or fingerprints, and be easier to clean. The lens is also sealed against moisture along the barrel. Additionally, the lens's firmware can be kept up to date via Tamron's optional TAP-in console.

  • 17-35mm focal length is ideal for a variety of scenes.
  • Bright maximum aperture of f/2.8 works well in low light.
  • Optimized Silent Drive AF motor ensures quick, quiet, accurate autofocus.
  • Coatings on lens elements help reduce ghosting, flare, and aberrations that are common in wide-angle lenses.
  • Front lens element is resistant to water and oil and the entire lens is sealed for outdoor use.
  • TAP-in Console compatibility lets you easily update firmware and perform other customizations.

    Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4.0 reviews

17-35mm f/2.8-4 DI OSD Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very satisfied. Recently moved from DX (D300) to FX (D750), and have tried several samples of Nikon and other brands of consumer grade FX wide & mid range zooms. Up until now, nothing tried has measured up to the image quality standards that I've grown accustomed to with my DX set-up. I hardly ever do write-ups, but > > > this Tamron is a real keeper. No weaknesses by consumer-grade standards, at least not in my sample. Saturation, contrast, and color accuracy on par with modern Nikons. Tack sharp in most of image area wide open at all focal lengths. Tack sharp to far corners at all lengths when stopped down twice. All focal lengths equally good. Absolutely no flare or ghosting. No CA. Some distortion but nothing wavy or hard to correct even without a Lightroom update yet on lens profile. Build quality is comparable with Nikon consumer grade, but not as solid (or heavy) as Tokina. Only minor nits to pick -- lens zoom is not totally contained in outer casing, it extends in zooming but only about a quarter inch or so, and the lack of a distance scale seems a bit cheap. Recommended for even the most critical of consumers.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fast wide angle lens that get's the job done. So here is the thing. I love this lens. The build is fantastic (it is a zoom so it does have an extending barrel (by about 1/2"). It is tack sharp at all apertures in the center of the frame. Wide open, at 17mm it is a TAD soft in the corners.... I mean honestly completely workable and I have no complaints. Few notes it is indeed a 2.8-4 lens, but at 17mm at very close focus ranges (3ft) it is a 3.2 lens. My particular copy does have issues though which is why I am giving it 3 stars. For some reason only sometimes when I attach the lens at 35 mm the d750 body shows f25 (which isn't even possible on this lens) and lets you adjust from f25 - f90. If I remove the lens and put it back on no issues..... I bought it new at a retailer in Denver CO, and am considering taking it back. I don't have issues with any of my other lenses. It is very odd though... only occurs say 1 in every 8 times.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great travel Wide Angle Zoom A couple reasons why I bought this lens.  Lightweight, wide angle, great IQ and 77mm filter.  Ive looked at other WA lenses but really wanted something that would work with my 77mm polarizer and ND filters, when Tamron announced this I was very excited and so far it hasnt disappointed.  IQ seems really good when I do my part and its flare resistance is superb with light sources in frame or slightly out of frame.  Still a little new to make a full determination but so far I am happy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great buy for the money I had a Nikon 17-35 f/2.8 purchased used in 2013. I compared this to a possible new 16-35 f/4 but decided to go with the former… After 5 years of squeaky focus and sloppy zoom ring I felt it was time for a change. The Nikon was ok but was very soft on the edges and in the corners… forgetaboudit. So, when I saw the new Tamron 17-35 f 2.8-4 I thought it might be time for a change. I watched for reviews and Camera Labs https://www.cameralabs.com/tamron-17-35mm-f2-8-4-review/  did a great job doing a comparison of the Tamron 15-30, Nikon 18-35 and the Tokina 17-35 to the Tamron 17-35. It was exactly what I was looking for. If you are interested in this lens I HIGHLY recommend checking this out. It was a toss-up between the 18-35 3.5/4.5 and the Tamron 2.8-4 until I saw this review. After spending more than a month with the lens I can share my thoughts on its performance. First off it is over a half pound lighter that the Nikon it replaced. It is far sharper everywhere in the frame especially the corners. So it is lighter and sharper and still takes the same 77mm filters so no new filters needed. It focuses quickly and is much quieter (no more squeaks). I did a side by side comparison with my own lenses Nikon 20mm f/2.8 D and Rokinon 14mm f/2.8. Both prime lenses and the Tamron easily beat the 20mm and was a match for the Rokinon. That is saying a lot when the zoom beats or matches the prime lenses. What I don’t like is the lack of a distance scale. I use hyperfocal distance All The Time so losing the distance scale has an impact on my workflow. It would have been really easy for Tamron to include a distance scale since the focusing ring is directly connected to the focusing mechanism aka infinity and close focus have solid stops on the focus ring… No brainer from my perspective. Easily fixed… At 17mm I know that 3ft is the hyperfocal distance for f/11 and 5ft is the hyperfocal distance for f/8. I set up the camera at these distances from a target and marked the focusing ring with white Testors model enamel for both distances. The focusing ring does rotate when in autofocus. It has not impacted me at all since most of my work is done on a tripod or when hand held my fingers are normally on the zoom ring. Speaking of the zoom ring it is nice and tight, unlike the old Nikon 17-35 which was loose and sloppy. When zooming the Tamron does increase it’s length unlike the Nikon 17-35. Not a big deal since I don’t hang a lot of filters off the front end of the lens and it doesn’t need to support any weight. The lens is at its shortest length at 24mm focal length and extends slightly at 35mm and its longest (5mm?) at 17mm focal length. There aren’t a lot of zoom lenses in this focal range that can combine the sharpness, light weight and price point of this lens. I recommend it to anyone who’s main subject is landscapes and uses a tripod the majority of the time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost... I don’t know...bought this lens, loved this lens. Crazy sharp images, good color rendition, compact and light weight...and yet...I traded it in 3 weeks after purchasing for the 24-70mm f/2.8 G2. It wasn’t so much the focal range but the fact that it wasn’t f/2.8 throughout the focal range...which would have been AMAZING!
