OWC / Other World Computing Express 4M2 Reviews

Express 4M2 4-Slot M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Forward-looking product, high quality, works very well. Theres really not much out there to compete with this at the moment. While a fast single NVMe drive might come close to saturating the Thunderbolt 3 bus (and two certainly will), having four slots makes it possible to buy lower-capacity drives to reach terabytes of ultra-fast solid-state storage for a comparative song compared to, for instance, Apples prices to upgrade to comparable capacities. Ive always been a big fan of OWCs Thunderbay Mini, which puts four 2.5 SATA drives in nice, fairly quiet enclosure. I always dreamed of putting 4-8TB of SSD storage in my Thunderbay Mini, but this came along and reset the performance bar before that could happen, so the Mini is now an archive drive attached to my server. For whatever reason, the quick setup via SoftRAID failed (twice), and I thought I had either a bad enclosure or a bad SSD (or two), but I was eventually able to certify all four of the 500GB Samsung 960 Evos I installed and set up a RAID 0 array that is working very well. Im knocking one star off for the pretty loud fan in the unit - in normal usage, the enclosure is by far the loudest part of my 2018 Mac mini/eGPU setup. The mini starts to make some fan noise under load, as does the eGPU, but the fan in the 4M2 runs constantly at the same speed, and is always audible. I pondered going with a silent option, but couldnt find anything with the same price/performance ratio; anything truly silent was either much more expensive or not nearly as fast, and all lacked the 4M2s second TB3 port. My only other wish was that OWC would offer the enclosure as a pre-configured solution with a 3-year warranty, as they have usually done in the past.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from FAST!!! Installed (4) 2TB Samsung 970s in the drive. Downloaded the free Softraid XT Lite app and created an 8TB Raid-0 Drive.  Its super-fast, getting 2,200-2,500MB/s transfer rates consistently.  That said, each SSD blade is rated for 2,500-3,500MB/s, so its slightly disappointing not to get true Raid-0 performance.  (In theory, at least, one could approach 9,000-10,000MB/s)   The fan is not noisy, but definitely audible.  If you like or need silence (ie. sound recording studio) this might not work for you.   Sometimes, I unplug the power adapter to reduce noise at my desk.   There is no on/off switch, which would be nice to have for a future design update.   All in all, the unit is really sturdy and well-built, the enclosure is tiny, and its still the fastest 8TB drive to date, along with the 8TB OWC Thunderblade.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great way to get internal SSD speeds externally So the trick with this unit is that your speeds increase with RAID 0 the more slots you fill.  With a single 512GB SSD, I got 671MB/s write and 781MB/s read. Not bad, but certainly not in the 2,500MB/s range that I get with my Macbookss internal SSD.  But, when I filled all four slots with 512GB SSDs, I got 2,024MB/s write and 2,470 read speeds which is very close to my internal SSD. One thing not mentioned, if your computer has TWO Thunderbolt buses, (not ports, but buses), then you can run two of these and RAID-0 them across both enclosures which is one of the advantages of Softraid. Then, leveraging both buses the two enclosure will deliver in the 3,500MB/s range of performance. Expensive, sure, but for pure speed in rendering , say, video, it may be worth it. Only grip is the fan is a tad noisy and it would nice if it would power off the fan when possible , it seems to stay on as long as there is power. Quality is top notch though and it just works.
