Peak Design Travel Backpack Overview

The black Travel Backpack from Peak Design is a bag that can serve as the core of a versatile transportation system for photographers, multimedia creators, and dedicated travelers. Expansion zippers along its spacious main compartment allows this backpack to increase from 30L to 45L in volume, while inside, a zippered partition system forms an optional front and rear divider. To further enhance the ability to organize this bag's contents, separately available Peak Design compartments that are specifically designed to store camera, video, audio, and digital media equipment, as well as apparel or small electronics can be arranged within the Travel Backpack to create a customized carrying solution that can be changed as needed.

When the Travel Backpack is worn, a sleeve with dedicated pockets for a 10" tablet computer and a 15" laptop rests behind the shoulders, within the main compartment. A front-facing pocket is included for items that need to be accessed quickly and conveniently, such as a pair of sunglasses or music player earphones, while hidden side pockets can be used to safely hold a passport, a phone, or other items that benefit from a higher degree of security. Also along the sides of the Travel Backpack are two large, open pockets that can each hold a water bottle, tripod, monopod, or trekking pole; any one of which can be secured using a locking strap above each pocket.

If placed on the ground or a flat surface, complete access to Peak Design compartments or items placed directly within the Travel Backpack is provided by a zippered panel that faces the back, as well as the front panel which unzips to also reveal four zippered mesh pockets that can be used to store and organize batteries, memory cards, or small electronics. When partially opened, the rear panel's zippers allow a laptop or tablet computer to be removed from or placed within the laptop and tablet computer pockets through the top of the Travel Backpack. The main compartment can be reached even while carrying the Travel Backpack, through zippered side openings which are positioned to face the wearer when the bag is rotated from one's back to front with either side facing upward.

The Travel Backpack can be carried using built-in handles along its top, sides, or by its adjustable, shoulder straps. For heavy loads, this bag's sternum strap can be used to more evenly distribute the weight being carried, while a waist belt transfers weight to the hips for additional comfort, and helps to limit unintentional shifting around the wearer. During storage or transport, the straps and waist belt can be tucked behind the rear panel, which also features a built-in handle that can be used as a pass-through, allowing this bag to be mounted onto a rolling case's dual-column telescoping handle for added convenience.

Featuring durable, nylon construction, the Travel Backpack is built to be weather resistant and is compatible with a separately available rain cover for further protection from the elements.

Even though this bag is marketed heavily towards camera owners the bags versatility and organization made it my go to choice for travel.

The amount of thought that went into designing this bag is immediately apparent. The bag is very accessible, comfortable, holds a ton of items without feeling bulky, and just works better than any other travel backpack I have used. On top of that, the quality of the materials is great. Highly recommend this bag!!

I highly recommend this pack! This was a Xmas present to myself. I used it for the first time last month for a one-week international business trip (casual dress, but colder climate). I've been a one-bagger (really one plus a shoulder bag for business) for a while, and the PD Travel Backpack handled everything just fine. You really need to explore it to know its features and the best way to pack different loads, which gives you many options. Weight distribution in a travel pack is critical for me because of back and shoulder issues. The Travel Backpack's helped immensely, and the pack rides very well. My only hassle was when I lost the sternum strap. The shoulder straps were not optimally placed. Lesson learned: you need to secure the strap well to avoid losing it when using the overhead bins in planes. I've now purchased a couple of extras.

Love the size of this backpack and the ability to turn to 45l when needed. Works even better with my peakdesign packing cubes. Love the sage color too!

I've been on a quest to find the perfect bag. I have the Atlas Adventure Pack and the Peter Mckinnon Nomatic. Both have a depth issue. My 5DMIV with battery grip doesn't fit well. Put a decent sized tripod plate on and forget it. Can anyone shed light on the depth for this?
Asked by: Chris
My 5D3 with grip and 50mm 1.2L lens fit perfectly in a on-side orientation. Theoretically you could put a larger lens and fit as well. Bag is very roomy. It works largely on the insert systems so I recommend going to the manufacturer site and looking at the depth for the insert you wish to use to see how it will fit. Also Peak Design is one of the best companies when it comes to how to videos. Search them on YouTube and they will have many videos of their products and different fitments for many popular hardware.

Can this bag hold a 600 mm lens? If not, what's the largest lens the bag can hold?
Asked by: William
Peak Design Travel Backpack (Black) does not include any dividers though. Usually an option with dividers is purchased so that it can better hold the lens. For example this one comes with the medium dividers. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1456246-REG/peak_design_peak_design_45l_travel.html The medium dividers measures only 11 x 11 x 6" so it would fit a smaller lens for example 70-300, but it depends on the exact lens you are looking for because there are larger and smaller 600mm lenses in the market.

I have read mixed reviews of the hip/waist straps. Can anyone comment on whether they help to distribute the weight comfortably?
Asked by: Toby
It does help quite a bit to distribute the weight evenly, but keep in mind it is a bi smaller and less padded than most would expect. Better for every day commuter shooters and not as comfortable for long hikes.
