Peak Design Travel Backpack Overview

The sage-colored Travel Backpack from Peak Design is a bag that can serve as the core of a versatile transportation system for photographers, multimedia creators, and dedicated travelers. Expansion zippers along its spacious main compartment allows this backpack to increase from 30L to 45L in volume, while inside, a zippered partition system forms an optional front and rear divider. To further enhance the ability to organize this bag's contents, separately available Peak Design compartments that are specifically designed to store camera, video, audio, and digital media equipment, as well as apparel or small electronics can be arranged within the Travel Backpack to create a customized carrying solution that can be changed as needed.

When the Travel Backpack is worn, a sleeve with dedicated pockets for a 10" tablet computer and a 15" laptop rests behind the shoulders, within the main compartment. A front-facing pocket is included for items that need to be accessed quickly and conveniently, such as a pair of sunglasses or music player earphones, while hidden side pockets can be used to safely hold a passport, a phone, or other items that benefit from a higher degree of security. Also along the sides of the Travel Backpack are two large, open pockets that can each hold a water bottle, tripod, monopod, or trekking pole; any one of which can be secured using a locking strap above each pocket.

If placed on the ground or a flat surface, complete access to Peak Design compartments or items placed directly within the Travel Backpack is provided by a zippered panel that faces the back, as well as the front panel which unzips to also reveal four zippered mesh pockets that can be used to store and organize batteries, memory cards, or small electronics. When partially opened, the rear panel's zippers allow a laptop or tablet computer to be removed from or placed within the laptop and tablet computer pockets through the top of the Travel Backpack. The main compartment can be reached even while carrying the Travel Backpack, through zippered side openings which are positioned to face the wearer when the bag is rotated from one's back to front with either side facing upward.

The Travel Backpack can be carried using built-in handles along its top, sides, or by its adjustable, shoulder straps. For heavy loads, this bag's sternum strap can be used to more evenly distribute the weight being carried, while a waist belt transfers weight to the hips for additional comfort, and helps to limit unintentional shifting around the wearer. During storage or transport, the straps and waist belt can be tucked behind the rear panel, which also features a built-in handle that can be used as a pass-through, allowing this bag to be mounted onto a rolling case's dual-column telescoping handle for added convenience.

Featuring durable, nylon construction, the Travel Backpack is built to be weather resistant and is compatible with a separately available rain cover for further protection from the elements.

I was first introduced to Peak Design's luggage lineup by their monster-sized 65L Duffelpack. Its innovative features and cargo capacity have made it useful for long and short work trips alike. When I needed a new dedicated carry-on backpack, I chose to buy this pack because of my satisfaction with its massive sibling, and it doesn't disappoint. At its smallest setup, it holds 35L and is compact enough for daily use. When fully expanded, it holds 45L while still remaining easy to transport. In its standard configuration, it holds 40L. Personally, I've found the standard configuration to be the most convenient. In this mode, the bag will hold three units of Peak Design packing accessories and meet most airlines' carry-on restrictions. As far as build quality, it's up to Peak Design standards. The material is a thick and water-resistant nylon canvas. The stitching is sturdy, and the handles feel rock solid. If I had one complaint, it would be that the shoulder straps aren't foam-padded, but this is a small trade-off for their ability to fold into the bag and reduce its footprint. On a recent trip, I loaded this bag with a camera cube and a packing cube, then used the free space at the top for bulkier items. I had room for four days' worth of work and evening clothes, plus my SLR and lenses. Traveling with this bag was a joy; the side zippers made it easy to access my gear quickly, and the fold-in straps made overhead bin stowage a breeze. I'm happy to say that this bag effortlessly matches the quality of its bigger brother.

Took this bag in a couple flights and it was great, the theft deterrence features offer a great peace of mind while in the airport. The several storing option are very practical and allowed me to pack everything I needed plus a jacket on top of the bag thanks to the straps. And of course the easy access to my camera gear is just awesome.

Finally a bag that fits my big frame!

I purchased this backpack 2 years ago and couldn't be happier. Recently a small tear arose, backpack handle was tearing a little from main pack. Contacted Peak Design regarding warranty guarantees who were brilliant. They sent me a brand new bag to replace my broken one. Now this is a company which stands behind their product and promise to customers! Will be backing this brand for years to come. Thank you Peak Design.

I have read mixed reviews of the hip/waist straps. Can anyone comment on whether they help to distribute the weight comfortably?
Asked by: Toby
It does help quite a bit to distribute the weight evenly, but keep in mind it is a bi smaller and less padded than most would expect. Better for every day commuter shooters and not as comfortable for long hikes.

I've been on a quest to find the perfect bag. I have the Atlas Adventure Pack and the Peter Mckinnon Nomatic. Both have a depth issue. My 5DMIV with battery grip doesn't fit well. Put a decent sized tripod plate on and forget it. Can anyone shed light on the depth for this?
Asked by: Chris
My 5D3 with grip and 50mm 1.2L lens fit perfectly in a on-side orientation. Theoretically you could put a larger lens and fit as well. Bag is very roomy. It works largely on the insert systems so I recommend going to the manufacturer site and looking at the depth for the insert you wish to use to see how it will fit. Also Peak Design is one of the best companies when it comes to how to videos. Search them on YouTube and they will have many videos of their products and different fitments for many popular hardware.
