Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Overview

By B&H Photo's

Covering a useful range of focal lengths, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S is a versatile zoom, spanning wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives. Its constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains a consistent exposure throughout the zoom range and also helps to realize a more compact and lightweight alternative to an f/2.8 zoom. In regard to the optical design, a unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element, in addition to three aspherical elements, is used to help reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range in order to achieve high image sharpness and clarity. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to control flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color rendering in bright and backlit conditions.

Complementing the optics, a stepping motor provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override to suit both stills and video applications. A programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings. Additionally, the lens has a button-less retractable barrel to realize a more compact form factor when not in use.

Standard zoom covers a wide-angle to portrait-length range and is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the relatively lightweight design and compact form factor.
A unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element is incorporated into the optical design, along with three additional aspherical elements, to greatly reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, distortion, coma (comatic aberration), and flare for consistent edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Exposed elements feature a fluorine coating that affords protection to the optical system against dust, grease, and water droplets.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
Button-less retractable design maintains a compact form factor when the lens is not in use.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Reviews

Just bought this lens for the Z8 camera. My 1st test war everything I could ask for. And more!!! Great focus; accurate exposure and the weight is nice & light. Also can be used for macro work One firm complaint--- How can anyone refer to this product as a KIT LENS How on earth can an Item that lists for $1,000 be a kit anything. Kit lenses are items that are dirt cheap just to make the camera complete. This item is a blockbuster and a winner on all counts. Love it!!

Great Lens

I have been a professional photographer since 2001, and over the years have owned many Nikon and Sigma lenses. I particularly like the Sigma Art lenses, and had been using the extremely sharp Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 lens as my standard zoom for my Nikon D7500. I bought this lens with the Nikon Z6 ii when I recently upgraded to full frame and mirrorless, and have been very impressed with the image quality. Very sharp from edge to edge even wide open, good color and contrast, and any vignetting is easily corrected. It is also really compact and light. For $600 when purchased with the camera body I think this lens represents extremely good value. The fine detail it is capable of resolving is amazing, and with the Z6ii low light performance, F4 is no hardship at all. I would highly recommend this lens.

Despite having a very small construction or being considered a kit lens, it is a great quality optic, soft focus and very silent, due to its weight, it is noted that the construction material is of quality, I bought it in a kit with a NIKON Z5 and a spectacular combo, I don't regret it, the best buy

overall good lens, good quality. the only minor issue was this 'open box' lens did not include the lens hood. I guess i should have just purchased a new lens.

Bought for my Z7 ii

I was a bit dismayed that my older D series lens didn't have auto focus capability with my new mirrorless camera, so took the plunge. Although often called a 'kit lens', I don't see it that way. Even then, I'm blown away by the sharpness I get from it. The only drawback is that this lens doesn't have macro capability, but I purchased an extension tube to see how that will work out.

Best kit lens Nikon ever offered

Usually kit lenses are ones that pros ignore, but I had heard great things about this lens. The 24-70 2.8 is 3x the price and 2x the weight, and since I use this range mostly for general shooting and scenic/landscape stuff, I don't really need 2.8 on it. The constant f/4 is more than enough. I hate that it's not internal focusing compared with my other 2.8 lenses over the years, but love the light weight... and most importantly... THIS LENS IS GREAT! The image quality edge to edge is great, color is great, focus is fast and quiet. I borrowed one from a friend first and was extremely pleased with the results, and then bought new with my Z8. A rare find getting this quality for the price.

I bought this lens as part of a kit to pair with my z6ii and I love this lens. It rarely ever leaves my camera. I have used it for street and landscape photography, and it produces sharp images. It doesn't really bother me that its f4. I mostly shoot outdoors during the day, so the lack of lighting is seldom an issue and besides, the z6ii handles high iso pretty well.

Low light

Low light
Asked by: Scott
The Nikon Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens' low light performance is subjective, but relative to many other zoom choices, it is a great choice for most photographers, especially when paired with the IBIS systems found in the new Z-series cameras.

The specs say this lens has a programable ring. On my Z7, I have not been able to find the option to program the adjustment ring. I’ve found all the fn button options, but nothing about an adjustment ring. Is this just a misprint or am I missing something?

I want to buy a Cool-Lux Follow Focus Ring for this lens. What would be the right size?
Asked by: IVAN
The fit and ease of fitment will vary by the preferences of the user and the intended application. However, one option that some will find to fit the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Lens (B&H# NIZ24704) to their satisfaction is the Cool-Lux LuxGear Follow Focus Gear Ring (74 to 75.9mm) (B&H# COLG747): https://bhpho.to/3EIwNRW

Don't know about the 2.8, but it's not very good, definitely not as bad as the 14-30 though.

I'm trying to determine if my Z 24-70mm f4 lens is normal, or a bad copy. It has such severe vignetting at 24mm and 70mm on subjects farther away, such as landscapes, even with the Z6 'Vignette Control' ON and set to 'Normal.' The vignetting also seems to move or is random. Dark on one side then it shifts in the very next photo to the other side or corner. Is this normal? Is it because of the in body Image Stabilization?
Asked by: Craig
Either your lens hood is on incorrectly or you have a filter that is causing vignetting.
