Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Overview

Covering a useful range of focal lengths, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S is a versatile zoom, spanning wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives. Its constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains a consistent exposure throughout the zoom range and also helps to realize a more compact and lightweight alternative to an f/2.8 zoom. In regard to the optical design, a unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element, in addition to three aspherical elements, is used to help reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range in order to achieve high image sharpness and clarity. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to control flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color rendering in bright and backlit conditions.

Complementing the optics, a stepping motor provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override to suit both stills and video applications. A programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings. Additionally, the lens has a button-less retractable barrel to realize a more compact form factor when not in use.

Standard zoom covers a wide-angle to portrait-length range and is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the relatively lightweight design and compact form factor.
A unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element is incorporated into the optical design, along with three additional aspherical elements, to greatly reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, distortion, coma (comatic aberration), and flare for consistent edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Exposed elements feature a fluorine coating that affords protection to the optical system against dust, grease, and water droplets.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
Button-less retractable design maintains a compact form factor when the lens is not in use.

This is not like many other kit lens, This stands out as a very good lens and a great buy for the buck, unless you have to have the 2.8 save your money and get this, you wont regret it.

Love it!

Sharp, light and compact. Perfect for landscape.

Better than the 24-50 that comes with Nikon Z5 Kit

I had bought the Nikon Z5 camera, but in kit form that camera has the 24-50 f/4-6.3 lens. IMO, that is too short, and has the changing aperture as you up the focal length. It also has the 24-200, but I wanted something smaller. The Nikkor Z 24-70 f/4 is what I elected to buy...it has the extra focal length, without being too long. And it takes sharp images. I would have liked to see Nikon put this lens into kit form, but alas, no. I had to buy camera body only, and the lens separate. Even though I had to pay more, I am glad I got this lens...would recommend to anyone looking for Nikon Z series camera.

Great Lens

I probably would not have bought this on its own as it came with my Z6 kit, but nonetheless it's a very nice lens. One of the first things I used it for was a local band's gig. It totally blew away my D7200 using a 35mm or 50mm 1.8 F lens. Of course the camera is much better too, but the lens was great! Though it only stops down to f4, it's still held it own in low light. I think this lens is great for everyday photography, family photos, travel, street photography and landscapes. It's very lightweight and takes super sharp images. Not worth $1k but well worth the price when bundled in a kit.

Better than I thought it would be.

I have eschewed zooms for quite awhile, only shooting with primes. I got this as part of a kit though and figured if I didn't like it I could just sell it. It's actually quite impressive. Very sharp lens and very little detectable distortion. Yes it's not 1.4 or 1.8...but I have no problems using this as a standard lens or doing professional video shoots with this so far.

Razor sharp lens

Very high quality pictures. The Z mount enables subject tracking and eye detection on your Z camera. Regardless of what the internet pundits say, current software update on Nikon Z provides workable tracking, more than you need. I am always worried about switching these Z lenses due short flange distance and exposed sensor on camera. But this is a standard zoom. Does not go far for most closeups or outdoor wildlife shoots.

Sharp and Lightweight

This is my first Z Lens, and also my first 24-70 lens. I have only recently moved from APS-C to Full Frame, and on the APS-C side I used the Sigma 18-35 Art lens as my go-to mid-range zoom. The Z lens is definitely sharper than the Sigma, which I already think is a great lens! For me, the f/4 max aperture is not a problem, as most of what I do is landscape photography and timelapses, where I'm almost always between f/8 and f/11. The action of the wide zoom ring feels great. Smooth but firm. The 'unlock-before-use' took a little getting used to, but because the camera reminds you to unlock it before use, this is not a problem that will cause you to lose images. Overall: A solid, rugged lens, that is very easy to use, and also very sharp. If you don't need the fast aperture of the f/2.8 lens, this is almost as sharp, and much lighter, for a much more reasonable price. Highly recommend!

Great!

The specs say this lens has a programable ring. On my Z7, I have not been able to find the option to program the adjustment ring. I’ve found all the fn button options, but nothing about an adjustment ring. Is this just a misprint or am I missing something?

I want to buy a Cool-Lux Follow Focus Ring for this lens. What would be the right size?
Asked by: IVAN
The fit and ease of fitment will vary by the preferences of the user and the intended application. However, one option that some will find to fit the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Lens (B&H# NIZ24704) to their satisfaction is the Cool-Lux LuxGear Follow Focus Gear Ring (74 to 75.9mm) (B&H# COLG747): https://bhpho.to/3EIwNRW

I'm trying to determine if my Z 24-70mm f4 lens is normal, or a bad copy. It has such severe vignetting at 24mm and 70mm on subjects farther away, such as landscapes, even with the Z6 'Vignette Control' ON and set to 'Normal.' The vignetting also seems to move or is random. Dark on one side then it shifts in the very next photo to the other side or corner. Is this normal? Is it because of the in body Image Stabilization?
Asked by: Craig
Either your lens hood is on incorrectly or you have a filter that is causing vignetting.

Would this lens be usable for astrological photography?
Asked by: Anonymous
For astronomy photography, it is better to use a lens that is f2.8 or wider such as the 24-70 f2.8. Please take a look at the following link: https://bhpho.to/2GOCMtO Many people also prefer a wider angle lens for astronomy photography such as this 14mm: https://bhpho.to/2SZKCVt
