Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S Overview

By B&H Photo's

A favored focal length for everything from landscape to street shooting, the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S is a prime wide-angle lens characterized by its versatility and bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. Furthering its merits, the optical design features two extra-low dispersion elements and three aspherical elements, which reduce a variety of aberrations and distortion to produce imagery with high sharpness, clarity, and accurate color rendering. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings are used, too, to suppress flare and ghosting for greater color fidelity and higher contrast.

Benefitting the optics, a stepping motor provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override to suit both stills and video applications. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Prime wide-angle lens is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus.
Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

Coming from both the Nikkor 50mm f1.4D and the Nikkor 50mm f1.8G, this lens is way sharper wide open, from edge-to-edge at every aperture. I especially appreciate how this lens virtually free of chromatic aberrations, especially when compared to my 50 f1.4D, and noticeably sharper than the f1.8G. This is an essential piece of kit that I often use when recording video. The focus is quick, smooth and quiet. You won't be disappointed with this lens.

One of the sharpest ones out there! My everyday lens. It's lightweight, fast and sharp. Perfect for indoor and outdoor shots!

The perfect lens for me

I really love this lens. 35mm is my favorite general purpose, walk-around, everyday focal length--especially when you can get reasonably close to the action. This is ideal for chasing my kids and pets around the house. Performance on the Z6 ii is perfect. Makes for a pleasant, lightweight, easy-to-carry package that encourages me take my camera more often than I otherwise would have. Like everyone else has already stated, the image quality is phenomenal--this is sharp glass! Way sharper than my amateur status can probably take advantage of... but I'm glad to have it. Attached photos are jpegs, straight out of my Z6 II. Some cropping applied for framing / aesthetics... but no further edits. When I just want easy snapshots without any editing, this combo is perfect! Of course, it only gets better when you shoot RAW.

Super sharp

Love this lens. Light to carry and super sharp. I've been taking shots wide open and love the images and bokeh. Better Bokeh IMO than F mount lenses I have used.

Low build quality

The build quality is bad. It is all plastic and feels very flimsy with made in china written all over it. The price is premium but it was build like a disposable lens. It is also very large in comparison with the SLR version of the 35mm lens.

love it!

Would you get this to replace a Tamron 35/1.4?
Asked by: Javier
If you're happy with the lens you're using, then save the money. If you need to move to a new lens then seriously consider the Nikor Z35 F1.8; great bokeh, super sharp and fast focus as you'd expect from a prime lens.

Internal. I love this lens. I have a lot of Z glass, including the 50mm f/1.2. This 35mm f/1.8 is SUCH a good combination of small size, light weight, and fast aperture.
