Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S Overview

A compact, well-versed prime, the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S from Nikon offers a normal-length field of view along with a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. The comfortable perspective pairs with the f/1.8 design to suit working in difficult lighting conditions as well as offers increased control over depth of field. The optical design includes two aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion elements, which greatly reduce both spherical and chromatic aberrations for increased sharpness and clarity. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings are used, too, to suppress flare and ghosting for greater color fidelity and higher contrast.

In terms of handling, a stepping motor provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override to suit both stills and video applications. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Prime normal-length lens is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus.
Two aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable control ring can be used to intuitively adjust a variety of camera and exposure settings.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

When using this lens, the only thing that will make your photos better is you, the photographer. This lens is phenomenal. It has properties you want in precision optics: resolution, acuity, contrast, color fidelity, aberration corrections, and smooth transitions between the essential three image qualities of soft foreground, sharply focused subject, and background fade. This lens focuses quickly and is of a size and weight that make it easy to use. I like very much how it feels and handles on my Z 7II and on my Zf (without a grip accessory).  The 50mm focal length has long been my favorite. My first one was a Nikkor 50 f/1.4 AIS that I bought in 1964. In the intervening years I have bought a lot of other lenses but it was that faithful 50/1.4 AIS that recorded what are now my life’s most heartwarming memories. I sold all my old photography gear when I converted to mirrorless in March of 2021. Starting over with all new gear, I bought a Nikon Z 7II and a Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S. The 50/1.2 is a spectacularly fine lens and I am very glad I have one. However, with my hands now a bit less steady than they used to be (I am 81 yo), I find that the 50/1.2 is best used on a tripod. That constraint (speaking just for me) is not so handy for catching my kitty in her moments of mischief or for leisurely ambling around town and countryside to photograph what catches my interest. Hence, for Christmas of 2024, with a 50mm already in hand, I decided to treat myself to a lighter and smaller Z 85mm f/1.8 S. That lens became a fave so fast that just two months later it was easy to talk myself into buying its sibling 50/1.8.. And am I ever glad I did!  I own six other Z lenses; 26/2.8, 40/2, 50/1.2, 85/1.8, 105/2.8, and 24-120/4. Each fills a purpose to shoot portraits, florals, landscapes, and some street. Nonetheless, I expect my new 50/1.8, as was my old AIS 50/1.4, will be the one I use most. I like the look of 50mm photos because they render most closely how we perceive the world. And that makes their images all the more real. Based on my own complete satisfaction with the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 S, I vouch for it to fulfill your expectations for a high quality prime lens. I have a Nikon z50 DX. Will this lens mount directly onto this camera?

Yes! This is an incredible lens for the Z50. It will have an equivalent focal length of 75mm due to the crop factor, but there won't be any significant changes otherwise.
