Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S Overview

By B&H Photo's

A compact, well-versed prime, the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S from Nikon offers a normal-length field of view along with a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. The comfortable perspective pairs with the f/1.8 design to suit working in difficult lighting conditions as well as offers increased control over depth of field. The optical design includes two aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion elements, which greatly reduce both spherical and chromatic aberrations for increased sharpness and clarity. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings are used, too, to suppress flare and ghosting for greater color fidelity and higher contrast.

In terms of handling, a stepping motor provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override to suit both stills and video applications. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Prime normal-length lens is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus.
Two aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable control ring can be used to intuitively adjust a variety of camera and exposure settings.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S Reviews

Great normal perspective lens, but why so big?

I shot a 50mm f/1.4 AF-D for years. It is sharp and compact. This new Z lens is sharp, but NOT compact. It calls attention to itself which I find annoying for Street Photography. So much so, I bought a much smaller Z 40mm f/2 to have a compact option available. I much prefer the 50mm perspective over the 40mm, so I do use he 50mm more often, but the size is a big negative.

Great Images ... just wish it weren't so BIG!

I've had a sub f2 50mm for every camera system I have ever owned (Minolta, Canon, Nikon) and I love the normal perspective it delivers. This particular lens performs beautifully, I just don't get why it has to be so big. The 40mm f2 is a wonderful compact lens, I just don't love the extra field of view afforded by the 40mm perspective when I'm shooting on the street.

Really great lens

This is a really great 50mm. Such a versatile lens that can handle low light scenarios and keep everything crisp.

Great Lens but not quiet.

Love the lens. It is very clean BUT is not quiet. I sent the first back because of the motor noise. The second lens was a little better but you can hear the focus motor, not as bad as the first lens however.

Brilliant Prime lens. Most certainly essential!

I was hesitant at first considering I'd seen such expensive weather sealed lenses, yet I gave this Nikon a shot and am blown away by the quality. I've set myself upon exploring the pedestrian infrastructure of my direct surroundings and have yet to travel far from home, so please enjoy these limited examples from my Nikon Z6ii.

Excellent Prime Lens

This lens produces high quality extremely crisp photos. It is larger and heavier than the 50mm lens I used with my Nikon DSLR. However, the performance is outstanding and I would highly recommend this lens as a prime lens for a Z6 or Z7.

I'm a wedding and portrait photographer and needed to upgrade my old 50mm lens for my D610. I just bought the Z6II and figured I might as well start investing in mirrorless lenses too. SO HAPPY I DID. This lens is insanely sharp. To the point where I didn't have a macro one day and needed to do a ring shot and was able to shoot the ring at f2.8 to get it all in focus and then crop the image to make it look like a macro. I could have NEVER done that with my old lens. This one is fast too. I can shoot at 1.8 with no focus issues and the subjects come out nice and crisp. Highly, highly recommend! :)

Yes! This is an incredible lens for the Z50. It will have an equivalent focal length of 75mm due to the crop factor, but there won't be any significant changes otherwise.
