Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S Overview

By B&H Photo's

A compact, well-versed prime, the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S from Nikon offers a normal-length field of view along with a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. The comfortable perspective pairs with the f/1.8 design to suit working in difficult lighting conditions as well as offers increased control over depth of field. The optical design includes two aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion elements, which greatly reduce both spherical and chromatic aberrations for increased sharpness and clarity. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings are used, too, to suppress flare and ghosting for greater color fidelity and higher contrast.

In terms of handling, a stepping motor provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override to suit both stills and video applications. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Prime normal-length lens is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus.
Two aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable control ring can be used to intuitively adjust a variety of camera and exposure settings.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

This lens is tack sharp in both FX and DX mode on my Z& II. Typical outstanding NIKKOR glass and the fantastic B&H service is an unbeatable combination.

The type of quality produced by this 50mm is amazing having paired it with my new Z7 II. I can't stress enough how great this lens is and at a very attractive price at that! Definitely a must have as far as my lens loadout.

The last 50mm lens you'll ever need

Wow. When Hugh Brownstone said this is the last 50mm lens you'll ever need to buy, he wasn't joking around. Sharp, contrasty, 3D pop, creamy bokeh... it really has it all. I can't imagine that anyone could be disappointed in the optics. Attached are a couple street photos, processed in DxO PL5, with the Tri-X simulation. This is my first Z lens, and it really has me rethinking my plan to just use my manual AIS Nikkor collection with my Z5. Negatives: It's big. It's a bit plasticy. With the Z5 the AF is on the slower side, in low light surprisingly so. I'm not sure if the lens or camera is to blame. It does make some noise when focusing, and you can actually feel the torque through the grip as the elements move.

Stellar

I bought my Z6 as primarily a low- light camera, so this lens was the obvious first choice as the best fast/budget native lens option. I could have used a 50mm 1.8G on FTZ adapter for less $, but why upgrade to the Z system and not take advantage of the superior Z glass? The rave reviews of this lens were accurate; it is really that good. The corner- to- corner sharpness is simply amazing. Where this lens shines is wide open, where it totally smokes the nikon G lenses. Sharpness, resolution and contrast are basically identical at f/1.8 and f/8... meaning that the era of stopping down for maximum image quality is over! This is a dream come true for astro shooters. Stars are tack sharp pinpoints of light at f/1.8, and coma and sagittal astigmatism are nearly imperceptible. This lens stays at f/1.8 pretty much perpetually on my camera. The only two (minor) gripes I have: (1) the little ridges on the focus ring collect dust/lint like crazy. (2) the internal aperture blades flap open and shut audibly every time the camera is either turned on/off and every time it sleeps/wakes up, which is frequently and seems like it would put extra wear and tear on the mechanisms. Otherwise the ergonomics are superb; it's lightweight, fairly compact and feels solid and balanced on the Z6. The focus ring is buttery smooth. If technical image quality matters to you, then the price increase vs. the 50 1.8G is absolutely worth it. If I could afford the Z 20mm 1.8 I would buy it in a heartbeat.

SHARP SHARP SHARP

I expected nothing less out of this 50. It replaced our old 50/1.8 D lenses and this thing is on point all the time.

Sharpest Nifty Fifty

50mm lens is a great lens to have in your bag. Purchased this as I wanted to see if the Z-lens was sharper that my old 50mm 1.4. I was astonished with the sharpness from corner to corner with this new 50mm 1.8. Sharper than the 1.4 without a doubt. In time I will move over to mirrorless all together. The Nikon Z cameras with the larger flange opening makes the new Z line what it is. Sharpe!!

Yes! This is an incredible lens for the Z50. It will have an equivalent focal length of 75mm due to the crop factor, but there won't be any significant changes otherwise.
