Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR Overview

By B&H Photo's

Contrary to popular belief, a super telephoto does not have to be a massive lens, proven here with the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR. Taking exceptionally long reach and giving it a hand-holdable form factor, this 500mm prime utilizes a unique Phase Fresnel element to greatly reduce the size and weight compared to previous versions of the focal length. This PF element, along with three extra-low dispersion elements, also helps to virtually eliminate color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve a high degree of clarity, sharpness, and color fidelity. Complementing this advanced optical design, individual elements also feature both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings to suppress flare and ghosting, as well as a protective fluorine coating to guard the optical system from dust and moisture.

Benefitting the optical design, this telephoto features a Silent Wave Motor AF system that produces fast, near-silent focusing performance to suit both stills shooting and movie recording, and which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Super telephoto designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 750mm equivalent focal length.
One Phase Fresnel element and three extra-low dispersion lens elements work to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing; improve overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity; and help to minimize the overall weight of the lens.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by four stops, benefiting this lens's use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions and a Tripod Mode helps to suppress subtle ground vibrations when working atop a support system.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Fluorine-coated front element affords protection to the optical system.
Dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium-alloy lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
A removable tripod collar is included with the lens for well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon Z7/Z6 with FTZ, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.
Compatible with optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters.

Nikon 500pf

I gave the old 500 f4. Just too heavy for me. The 500pf has the massive advantage of being easy to handhold. Slight loss of quality and bokeh and I miss the extra stop. Everything has its pros and cons. Overall I love the ability to hand hold and capture birds in flight

The difference is significant

I finally bit the bullet and bought this lens after bemoaning too many soft images above 400 mm with my Signa Contemporary 150-600. Within 12 hours of the 500 pf's arrival I observed a territorial dispute between a house wren and several tree swallows. This picture would not have been near as good with my old equipment.

Focus was sketchy at best!

I could never get a good focus at any f/stop. Consistently fuzzy and lacked decent depth of field. I would not recommend this lens.

Very sharp

I bought this lens to use with my D500 and I've had it for around a week now. I already have the Nikkor 80-400mm and I'm very happy with that. However, a recent trip to Yellowstone convinced me that I needed a bit more 'reach'. I'm still getting used to the lens, however, first impressions are very good. I've tried it at relatively short range on one of the local rabbits and, just now at longer range, on a ship passing through Buzzards Bay. In each case, I've been impressed at just how sharp the lens is. I've used the lens hand-held and on a tripod and, in each case, the results have been excellent. I'm still to test it out with my 1.4 teleconverter. The light weight is obviously a plus as is the ability to slot it easily into my camera bag. We travel a lot so size and weight do matter.

Superb lens

This is an absolutely wonderful lens!. It is extremely sharp in its focus and remarkably light in weight, given its long focal length and it's being a prime lens. Coupled with a 1.4x teleconverter, I am able to get really excellent photographs from a long distance. I have been using a Sigma 150 to 600 mm Sports lens, but that one requires a very sturdy tripod since it is so incredibly heavy and large in size. I have learned the hard way that there is no way to carry that lens over any long distance, especially if it requires any kind of even moderate vertical hiking. I am getting the same quality photographs, if not better, with this prime and now I have a lens that I can comfortably hand carry over long distances, even without a backpack. This is easily one of the best purchases I've made of lenses over the past several years. I strongly recommend this to anyone who wants to be able to take excellent photographs at a great distance without paying/hemorrhaging at least three times the amount for the alternative Nikon lens having a wider fixed aperture and the length of a bazooka.

Fabulous wildlife lens

Last year I purchased the Nikon 300mm PF and was very pleased with the quality of my photos; however, it did not have far enough reach for birding. This year before my annual trip the coast, I purchased the Nikon 500m PF. I had no time to the test the lens before I left. Straight out of the box it took some amazing shots. Auto Focus was amazingly fast. First the first time, I shot birds in flight which were tack sharp. I was able to grab photos of shore birds across the nature preserve pond and then immediately switch to shooting dragonflies 15 feet away. As I wildlife photographer, I have much to learn but I feel very confident using this lens as I hone my skills..

Couldn't be happier

This lens is fantastic and light weight relative to it's purpose. Focus is EXTREMELY fast, though you have to take care to learn how to best manage focus as it will shift very quickly which is a good thing when you know what you are doing. Added an unedited image taken the first few days with it. (Raw though adobe color)

Why would someone purchase this lens rather than the 200-5500 f5.6?

It is much smaller and lighter therefore easier to handhold. The 500PF focuses faster. It is a prime lens. Probably superior IQ.

Will this lens be compatible with both the FTZ adapter AND 1.4 teleconverter (either F or new Z)? I would think the old F-mount tele attached to the lens, then to the FTZ should work... but would love someone to confirm.
