Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR Overview

By B&H Photo's

Contrary to popular belief, a super telephoto does not have to be a massive lens, proven here with the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR. Taking exceptionally long reach and giving it a hand-holdable form factor, this 500mm prime utilizes a unique Phase Fresnel element to greatly reduce the size and weight compared to previous versions of the focal length. This PF element, along with three extra-low dispersion elements, also helps to virtually eliminate color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve a high degree of clarity, sharpness, and color fidelity. Complementing this advanced optical design, individual elements also feature both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings to suppress flare and ghosting, as well as a protective fluorine coating to guard the optical system from dust and moisture.

Benefitting the optical design, this telephoto features a Silent Wave Motor AF system that produces fast, near-silent focusing performance to suit both stills shooting and movie recording, and which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Super telephoto designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 750mm equivalent focal length.
One Phase Fresnel element and three extra-low dispersion lens elements work to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing; improve overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity; and help to minimize the overall weight of the lens.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by four stops, benefiting this lens's use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions and a Tripod Mode helps to suppress subtle ground vibrations when working atop a support system.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Fluorine-coated front element affords protection to the optical system.
Dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium-alloy lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
A removable tripod collar is included with the lens for well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon Z7/Z6 with FTZ, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.
Compatible with optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR Reviews

Superb lens

This is an absolutely wonderful lens!. It is extremely sharp in its focus and remarkably light in weight, given its long focal length and it's being a prime lens. Coupled with a 1.4x teleconverter, I am able to get really excellent photographs from a long distance. I have been using a Sigma 150 to 600 mm Sports lens, but that one requires a very sturdy tripod since it is so incredibly heavy and large in size. I have learned the hard way that there is no way to carry that lens over any long distance, especially if it requires any kind of even moderate vertical hiking. I am getting the same quality photographs, if not better, with this prime and now I have a lens that I can comfortably hand carry over long distances, even without a backpack. This is easily one of the best purchases I've made of lenses over the past several years. I strongly recommend this to anyone who wants to be able to take excellent photographs at a great distance without paying/hemorrhaging at least three times the amount for the alternative Nikon lens having a wider fixed aperture and the length of a bazooka.

Love it

traded my old Nikon 500 f/4 vr lens for a lens half the weight!

Best wildlife lens ever for mere mortals

A professional photographer said The 500pf is the most fun lens, not the most used. Why? He prefers the Nikon 600F4 because it is a f4 as opposed to a f5.6 lens. That extra stop provides superior subject isolation from the background and slightly better AF in low light. As for sharpness, Af speed, the pictures tell the story I personally would rarely use a 600F4 even if I could afford it The difference is that this photographer is able to carry camera and lens mounted on a tripod through the woods-easily a 20# burden. In contrast my d-500 weighs in a 5#. The new Z-9, a chunky camera if there ever was one, comes in at 7#. For that I, and most mere mortals, will give up one stop. Professional Z-9 shooters may decide to pick the 100-400S Z mount but, again, most mere mortals won't spend the extra $10K for that lens.

Super Lens

This is a great lens. I have a Nikon 200-500 lens. It is very good. However if you can afford it buy the 500 PF. It is that much better. It is lighter and smaller. Once in awhile I wish it would zoom to 200, but almost all my shots need 500mm.

So much lighter!

I have lost about 22 lbs with my rig . I lost 5 lbs when I switched to this lens from my 8 lbs Nikon 500 f/4VR (non FL) lens. Another 17 lbs when when I switched tripods and another 3 lbs when I switched from gimbal head to Acratech ball head. The lost of 1 f stop has not been an issue. The sharpness, focus and VR are ever bit as good as my old Nikon. I can spend longer, go further, with less back pain now.

Easy to handle

Easy handling due to the light weight and pleased with the sharp results. Mostly used for wildlife and birds.

I have been using this lens with my Nikon D7500 to shoot distant shots of birds which are nesting this time of year. I did a lot of research before buying this lens and was impressed with the new fresnel technology. Super lightweight so I can easily bring this camera on long hikes. The photo is of a Great-horned owl mom with her owlet more than 100 feet away in a heron rookery. Check out those eyes!
