Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR Overview

By B&H Photo's

Contrary to popular belief, a super telephoto does not have to be a massive lens, proven here with the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR. Taking exceptionally long reach and giving it a hand-holdable form factor, this 500mm prime utilizes a unique Phase Fresnel element to greatly reduce the size and weight compared to previous versions of the focal length. This PF element, along with three extra-low dispersion elements, also helps to virtually eliminate color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve a high degree of clarity, sharpness, and color fidelity. Complementing this advanced optical design, individual elements also feature both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings to suppress flare and ghosting, as well as a protective fluorine coating to guard the optical system from dust and moisture.

Benefitting the optical design, this telephoto features a Silent Wave Motor AF system that produces fast, near-silent focusing performance to suit both stills shooting and movie recording, and which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Super telephoto designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 750mm equivalent focal length.
One Phase Fresnel element and three extra-low dispersion lens elements work to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing; improve overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity; and help to minimize the overall weight of the lens.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by four stops, benefiting this lens's use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions and a Tripod Mode helps to suppress subtle ground vibrations when working atop a support system.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Fluorine-coated front element affords protection to the optical system.
Dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium-alloy lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
A removable tripod collar is included with the lens for well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon Z7/Z6 with FTZ, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.
Compatible with optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters.

Oh my word. How did I live without this lens? So sharp and so fast. I have paired it w/ the D850 and I am loving it for birds. I haven't really even taken it out that much. I uploaded some pics from my feeder and am super happy with the sharpness and detail. Amazing lens.

Had this lens for 3 weeks mounted on a Nikon D500. This my first prime telephoto and is a handheld dream. Had to get used to the fixed focal length for BIF.They can get large in your lens in a hurry. Practice makes perfect, the old saying goes. Handheld ,fast focus ,sharp image perfect for my needs.

My sharpest Nikon lensa

I bought this lens to use on my Z9 replacing a 200-500 f/5.6. I was happy with the sharpness of the 200-500 but I found the AF a little slow for birds in flight. I had read many good reviews on the 500PF so I finally decided to give it a try. The lens greatly exceeded my expectations. While I was happy with the sharpness of the 200--500, this lens is much sharper and the contrast and color rendition is also much better. With careful post processing and good light I could get the 200-500 images to look close. But the real game changer was the AF speed. This lens focuses at least twice as fast as the 200-500. It grabs the initial focus much faster and stays locked on. Shooting at 20 fps, I'll often get a burst of 20-25 images all sharp. The 200-500 never came close to this. I debated this lens against the new 400mm Z f/4.5. I liked the idea of a Z lens, it would be my first, and having f/4.5 at 400mm. But for my needs 400mm is a little short. So the decision became the 500PF or the 400mm f/4.5 with a TC-14 giving 560mm but at f/6.3. I decided that 560mm wasn't much of an improvement over 500 especially at f/6.3. Also with the TC-14 the AF would not be as fast, it actually would be about as fast as the 200-500. With the 500PF and a TC-14 I would have a 700mm f/8.0, great for still subjects. If I only need 400mm the 400 would have been my choice. But for me, the 500 was a much better choice.

I have been wanting a lens in this range (500mm or 600mm) for quite a while but cannot handle the weight (hand holding) of the faster 400-600mm prime lenses. I was not sure what to expect but I am very happy with this lens. I can definitely hand hold with no issue. It is very sharp with beautiful bokeh. It does require more light than I anticipated so find myself shooting at a higher ISO than normal, plus flash in many situations. I have tried it with the Nikon 1.4X and while requiring even more light, I still think the focus is sharp. I would definitely recommend.,

A little slow to focus in poor light with the 1.4 X latest Nikkor extender, but quite sharp. Not as sharp as my 600mm F4 but at one third the cost and easily cartable it is my go to lens for walking around bird shooting.

I was a bit timid to buy this at first but this lens is incredible! The design & functions are extremely well thought out and placed on the lens...I've been holding it (hand held and it's VERY light compared to other lenses at 500mm) by the tripod collar and it works great! Need to switch from auto to manual focus? Just turn the focus dial above your hand holding the collar and you're all set. No stopping and switching...GREAT clarity on this lens at f/5 and all through it's full range. I just can't say how HAPPY I am with this purchase!

Amazing focus speed, clarity and light weight. I live in Michigan so I have only had a couple of sunny days since the purchase, but so far it's the best lens overall that I have owned (photog since 1996). The only gripe I have about it, and most other long lenses, is the minimum focusing distance...I feel they should by now be able to make them focus much closer than 10-20 feet.

Amazing lens!

What a great lens, super shar., bokeh is not bad at all, no weirdness yet. Af is smooth and quick. Yes a stop slower than my 200-400 vr I had, but much sharper and a lot lighter.

Why would someone purchase this lens rather than the 200-5500 f5.6?

It is much smaller and lighter therefore easier to handhold. The 500PF focuses faster. It is a prime lens. Probably superior IQ.
