Rokinon 85mm f/1.8 Overview

A desirable telephoto for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, the 85mm f/1.8 Lens from Rokinon pairs a sleek form factor with a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture for depth of field control and greater versatility in difficult lighting conditions. The optical design features one extra-low dispersion element, which reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing, and one high refractive index element to control spherical aberrations for improved sharpness. An Ultra Multi-Coating has also been applied to boost contrast by suppressing lens flare and ghosting. Additionally, the lens has a manual focus design for precise focusing down to 2.1' and a nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth bokeh quality.

Telephoto prime is designed for APS-C-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 127.5mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also affords extensive control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus techniques.
One extra-low dispersion element is used to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce imagery with a high degree of clarity and color fidelity.
A high refractive index element is used to control spherical aberrations and distortions in order to realize higher sharpness and accurate rendering.
An Ultra Multi-Coating has been applied to all lens elements in order to suppress lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy.
This manual focus lens has a non-rotating 62mm front filter mount to better enable the use of polarizing, graduated ND, and other filter types that require precise positioning.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality when using selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.

Rokinon 85mm f/1.8 Reviews

Good Lens at Decent Price

Bought for close-up use on BMPCC 4k (170mm FF equivalent). Very satisfied with sharpness. Focus and aperture rings work smoothly. Also bought the 50mm version of this lens, happy with both. Not specifically a cine lens but good value for money.

Overall good for the price but a bit disappointed

Pro: -Good portrait lens with enough aperture blades to stop down to f2.8 and still have good back ground blur. -Minimum focal distance of 0.65m -Has good contrast and minimum flare in most conditions -Well balance on my aps-c sensor camera Con: -Infinity focus and indeed any focus is more difficult than it should because of the 1/4 turn focus. The difficult and lack of sensitivity at infinity is puzzling. -Mount on my camera has very slight rotary play. -Shooting into the sun results in an interesting flare which may or may not be to your liking. In conclusion I would have overlooked the flaws except that my vintage Canon fd 100mm f2 lens outperforms it in most categories.

It's a great portrait lens for full sized sensors. For cropped sensors though, such as the A6000, you are looking more at a telephoto with this focal length. If you want group shots on a full frame then consider stepping down to a 50 mm prime, but for portrait/close-up with natural light on a full frame this lens is ideal.

Is this an exact same product as the Samyang 85mm ...

Is this an exact same product as the Samyang 85mm f1.8 ED UMC CS, apart from the branding? I kept reading some very good reviews on that lens and would really like to add that to my aps-c portrait arsenal but this shows up as a Rokinon instead. Your clarification is much appreciated. Thank you so much.

Rokinon and Samyang are interchangeable brand names

An 85mm is going to give you a tighter field of view. It would limit how much you could get in a single shot. Generally you will want something with a wider field of view.

Can this work on panasonic G7 or Gx85?
Asked by: davon
Yes, the Rokinon 85mm f/1.8 Lens for Micro Four Thirds would be compatible for use on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera. Do note that the Rokinon 85mm f/1.8 Lens for Micro Four Thirds is a fully manual lens, and you would have to focus the lens manually and adjust the aperture using the aperture ring built onto the lens, not via the control dial on your camera.
