Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Overview

Covering a versatile range of ultra wide-angle focal lengths, the Canon EF-mount SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 from Tamron enhances this wide zoom with sophisticated optics, focusing, and image stabilization. Helping to realize sharp, clear imagery, the optical design incorporates aspherical and low dispersion glass elements to reduce both spherical and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range. A trio of coatings—AX, eBAND, and BBAR—have also been applied to suppress lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color rendering when working in bright and backlit conditions.

Benefitting the optical assets, performance and handling is enhanced through the use of dual MPUs (Micro-Processing Unit), which ensure fast and reliable image stabilization and autofocus. Vibration Compensation accounts for up to 4.5 stops of camera shake, to result in sharper images when shooting handheld at slower shutter speeds. Conversely, a USD motor provides quick and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, the lens body is weather-sealed and moisture resistant, and the front element features a protective fluorine coating to guard against dust and smearing.

Ultra-wide zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 24-48mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture affords consistent brightness throughout the zoom range, and benefits working in difficult lighting conditions.
Three LD (low dispersion) elements are featured in the optical design to noticeably limit color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color fidelity.
Two glass-molded aspherical elements and one XGM (eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical) element help to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range to deliver notable sharpness and accurate rendering.
An AX coating has been to the convex surface of large, curved elements and both eBAND and BBAR coatings have also been applied to individual elements to suppress ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 4.5 stops for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions.
An Ultrasonic Silent Drive autofocus motor delivers quick and precise focusing performance to suit working with moving subjects. This motor also affords full-time manual focus control, and it is possible to focus on subjects as close as 11" away.
Dual dedicated MPUs (Micro-Processing Unit) are used—one for autofocus, one for VC—to ensure fast, responsive focusing and stabilization performance.
A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Integrated rear filter holder permits working with cut gel-type filters.
Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

Exceptionally solid build!! Just what I want in a high end quality lens. Beautifully made, love the built in lens hood. First tests with the lens shows fantastic quality but I have not used it a lot since I just received it before Christmas. I know I will love using this lens!

I have been very pleased with the build quality and images I have been getting from the f/2.8 24-70 G2 so I bought this 15-30mm new as well. I bought it as a replacement for my Tokina to photograph live shows and I look forward to shooting concerts with it once things open back up. This lens appears to be excellent from the shots I have gotten so far. Attached is a photo from today of an abandoned house.

I’m using this lens for the first trip to Austin TX. The colors just pop with this lens and I’m very impressed with the sharpness so far. I have noticed a little lens flare when the conditions are right but I’m not too worried about that.

I picked up this lens about 3 weeks ago. In the past, I had poor experiences with Tamron lenses, so I hoped the current reviews of this lens were accurate. I did try a Sigma 14-24 before this and was not impressed, very soft, maybe I had a poor edition. The Tamron does impress, sharp across the field at f8, easy to hand hold at 1/8 sec with vibration reduction. It is heavy and bulky, but the performance is very good and worth the weight inconvenience.

This thing is phenomenal. Little to no vignetting or chromatic aberrations at any zoom or aperture. Crystal clear images, tack sharp across the board, awesome, fast focusing, and delightful vibration compensation. If you're on the fence, just do it. You won't regret it.

Will a rear mount filter system like the one on ...

Will a rear mount filter system like the one on this lens work with gradient gel filters (if those even come in a gel equivalent)?
Asked by: Michael
In all our years of cinematography we have not heard of a rear gel grad filter ever being available. It is our opinion that it would not be practical. In order to fully utilizes grad filters, the user needs to position them precisely. That position may be higher or lower than the center of the frame. Also, it could be at an angle as well. This would be very difficult to manage in a rear gel. The clear solution is using 100mm filters in a holder such as NiSi S5 150mm Filter Holder Kit with Circular Polarizer for Select Tamron 15-30mm Lenses BH NIFH150T1530.

You would need an EF to MFT speedbooster. If you have that, you'd be able to mount it with the GH5S.

You will need to use a filter holder such as this Nisi B&H # NIFH150T1530. The Nisi comes with a circular polarizer built in and it accepts 150mm wide rectangular filters up to 2mm thick.
