HIVE LIGHTING Hornet 200-C Reviews

Great light with some flaws...

Ok. I have 4 units. Some CX, some C. Lights are great, app is worse than aputure app, but works fine after updates (took a year lol). 3 of 4 units mount stands broke immediately. They are not made for use even with Hive accessories. They can hold the unit, but not with something attached to it. Had to change some parts in it, changed for a better rubber, and it can hold some of profoto octa banks now. The dc sockets are bad, for 24v dcin for CX are the worse, cable starts to wobble in it, you need to think of how to take the pressure of it. ( i hear it also from rental house that uses them). I know cx is a cheaper model, but its xxx cheap made lol. And than the on-off switches, especially on CX series. My advice stick to C series, they are pricier, but better and will last a little longer. In general great lights. Especially for profoto kits. Thinking of adding 575 also to my collection.

Feels like the future!

All the promises of LED technology manifested. It's bright, color-changing, portable, and doesn't get hot. It's surprisingly small and light for the output -- sans reflector it could almost be carried in a purse. Color rendition seems great, super easy to match to other sources or practicals. The controls (phone app!) make this plain old fun to use. It's quickly become my go-to key.

A great little light!

Had a chance to try out the 200-c and I was impressed with the quality of light and how seamlessly the app gives you control of all the full color settings. A big bonus was the ability to use pro photo accessories with this unit!

Love it!

Very portable, takes Profoto modifiers, small, light and powerful

The most versatile light on the market if you travel

This light is the best in the game, period. We have two of these lights that we use for every production, no questions asked. They're small and compact and are a must if you travel often for productions. It's portable and can fit in any pelican alongside the rest of your camera gear. One light with a chimera soft box can serve as the perfect key and/or fill, and the wide range of colors makes it really versatile for any interview environment. Do be aware, it can overheat. We had one that had the o-ring around the LED on the front face melt off in a really humid interview environment. Hive quickly replaced it though, no questions asked.

Incredible color saturation and range

The color saturation and range on this unit is superb. I was blown away by the spectrum covered by this unit. In particular the super deep reds and blues where other LED units fall short. The controls are precise and you can dial in about any color imaginable. The IP rating allows use in damp environments which is also a huge plus, not something you will find in many competing lamps or soft lights. I also like the fact that you can use profoto modifiers as necessary.

Improved power output and Interface..

I was fortunate enough to use this 200-C Hive sent me to Demo for my latest music video I filmed. I own 2 Wasp 100-c's and love them..I appreciated the increased power output and used it with my soft box/grid for the music video. I love the presets that they come with. I used the club light one for the film. I would highly recommend this more powerful one if you are considering between the wasp 100-c and this one..Hope this helps.

If I wanted to use some sort of DC power distro, what would that be? To find a DC power source with enough amp output, I'd need to know if the max consumption of a 200-C 150W at 24V or 36V?
Asked by: Roger
150W at 24V is about 6 amps. 150W at 36V is just under 4 amps.

question

Are there photometrics for this light with the fresnel attachment?

The fresnel attachment would provide a 15-50 degree beam spot to flood.

This version is designed to be hung from a pipe. To put it on a standard 5/8 baby pin you would need a mount like this one https://bhpho.to/2x3FJ3y.

With colors, how bright is this fixture? I want to hit a mottled dark muslin backdrop about 10 feet away. Some have said I need the equivalent of 650 watts. Yes? No?
Asked by: Ty
This fixture will pretty easily be visible on a dark background at 10'. Bright is a relative thing It depends on if it is for the human eye or for a camera and what those settings are.

question

Why would I get the 22 degree spot versions if i can get the spot to flood? Is there a disadvantage with the spot to flood version?
Asked by: Adam W.
One of the main advantages of the C-Series lights is that they work with dozens of reflectors and hundreds of accessories, and while this provides tons of flexibility, there are pros and cons to each reflector. Here are the most popular versions you are asking about:Hornet 200-C Super Spot - This provides the tightest beam (22 deg) and most amount of punch for the light. It creates a Parabolic beam type of output and can be used as a bounce or long throw. It can also be modified with optional drop in lenses.Hornet 200-C Adjustable Fresnel - The Fresnel version provides the ability to spot and flood the fixture quickly and easily without changing the reflector. While the 15-50 degree beam spread provides a much wider range than the Spot Reflector, the glass itself (like all glass) does block a higher percentage of the light than the Spot Reflector. So for maximum output choose the spot, and for maximum flexibility choose the fresnel. Also, since virtually all of the reflectors, fresnels, softboxes and other optical accessories are all interchangeable throughout the C-Series line, you can mix and match to get these exact output and beam shape that you are looking for.I hope that answers your question!
