Hafler H400-0075 Overview

  • 1Description

The Hafler HA75 is a discrete Class-A tube-driven headphone amplifier designed to produce professional-quality sound with plenty of gain to power any type of headphone, while offering the added excitement and character of a real tube to optimize the listening experience.

The Class-A amplification circuit utilizes a 12AX7 tube to drive a variety of headphones with impedances from 8 to 400 Ohms. A 140V charge drives the tube to maximize headroom as it delivers the warmth and character so many listeners favor over solid-state designs. What's more, the HA75 provides a negative feedback control, which allows the user to dial in a more clinical (solid-state) sound or a warmer tube response, further enhancing the signal path for the type of program material that is at play.

Additionally, the HA75 can add excitement for the listener without losing the stereo field via the Focus control, which brings the stereo image to the center, thus replicating the sound and feel of listening to loudspeakers in a typical space. A Vox function warms the tone akin to an old-school loudness control, addressing the Fletcher-Munson curves to deliver equal loudness when listening at low levels. The Vox control can also can be used and create a "boom-box" effect for those that enjoy a more exaggerated response.

Designed with a 14-gauge steel casing, the enclosure helps shield low-level signals from RF contamination and external magnetic fields. The black anodized aluminum front panel provides two 1/4" headphone outputs, a level control knob, a Focus control knob, a feedback control knob, a 3-way Vox switch and buttons for power, input select (A/B), feedback engagement, and focus engagement.

The rear panel offers a variety of connections including a pair of XLR and two pairs of RCA (A/B) inputs. Output connectors include a thru-put pair of RCAs, which pass an unprocessed signal, while a pair of tube outputs add the Tubehead's warm tube character to a signal path between a preamp and power amp or to the inputs of an ADC for recording.

The XLR connectors are made with glass-impregnated nylon and feature extra-large, nickel-silver pin contacts, while the RCA connectors are gold-plated to ensure an optimized signal flow without tarnishing over time. To keep noise to a minimum, the Hafler HA75 is powered by the included ±16V external supply.

Main Features
  • 100% discrete class-A audio circuit with 12AX7 tube driver
  • Focus control simulates listening to speakers in open air
  • High output to handle virtually any type of headphone
  • Choice of balanced and unbalanced inputs
  • Thru-put expands system connectivity with RCA outputs of unprocessed signal
  • Tube Out: Tubehead's warm tube character is added to signal for music playback between preamp and amp or for recording
Inside
  • Tube Drive: Dual triode 12AX7 tube operates in stereo with a B+ voltage that reaches 140 volts to deliver the warm sonic advantages of a tube without excessive distortion
  • 100% Discrete Electronics: Uses full-sized resistors and capacitors that are hand inserted to deliver high audio quality
  • Individual Transistors: No IC chips. Individual transistors are used at each gain stage to minimize negative feedback and eliminate sound-degrading artifacts
  • Durable Switches: High-quality switches and potentiometers employ steel casings and metal shafts for long-term reliability
  • Glass-Filled XLRs: Glass-impregnated nylon XLR connectors are tougher than steel and feature extra-large, nickel-silver pin contacts for positive connection that will not tarnish over the years.
